Underwhelming link to say the least LOL. Smacks of Winstanley to me, as Gyokeres was signed on his watch at Brighton, and was on their books from 2017-21. Had a few unsuccessful loans, and was then sold to Coventry for £1m in 21/22.
December 12, 20232 yr I don't think anyone currently in our recruitment team understand that players can have teporary purple patches, and that doesn't mean that just cos they're doing well for a few months, they'll do it forever. If they'd been here 20 years ago we'd have the likes of Michael Ricketts and James Beattie up front.

He's a very very good striker, has no weaknesses. Would easily fit in at most top clubs. Having said that I would still prefer Toney simply cause of the experience and being "prem-proven".

Looking at his career history, he comes across as a goal every three game Championship striker who's had a purple patch at his new club. I'm curious why we weren't in for him in June when he was available for €20m from Coventry. Maybe scoring 9 in 12 games in the Portuguese league makes the data analytics suddenly veer off the charts LOL. His FBRef scouting report looks decent with one big caveat. The big caveat is that this is comparisons to positional peers in Men's Next 14 Competitions ... i.e the next 14 leagues after the top 5 (so no compares to anyone in PL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1) and also excluding CL and Europa League ... so much much less impressive in that context. If he was any good I think he'd still be at Brighton.
December 12, 20232 yr The state of strikers in world football is quite alarming to be honest, since becoming a fan 25 odd years ago this is the worst state of top strikers football has been in, 10/15 years ago you would have a list of 20 strikers you'd want at your club now I can't even think of 5.

I can think of 5 and all of them would be better than Toney. But the requirement of not being diagnosed and banned makes it's quite easy...

I saw him playing for Coventry last season in the cup against non-league Wrexham. He looked like a decent Championship player but nothing more.
December 13, 20232 yr For us, even a Solanke would be an improvement. He couldn't make it with us 4-5 years ago, but be walking into the first team tomorrow if he signs
December 20, 20232 yr He has no interest in coming to Chelsea. Its clickbait to make Arsenal feel better about themselves. Been a done deal for months.

I did see him in the championship a few times and was easily the best player in the league, reminds me of a younger Fernando Torres and how he fronts up and drives at people but personally I don't think it's the type of profile we need. Keep saying it but I just wish we could clone Giroud.
January 2, 20242 yr Given where Brentford have slipped to in the table recently, I'd be very surprised if they sell him, as surely they need him to try and help them retain their PL status ?

Especially with Mbuemo out. It would be a big risk for them to let him go. Even if they got a big fee, it wouldn't be worth losing their Premier League status over that. I can see them holding on to him until the summer.
January 3, 20242 yr The reported 80m price is absolutely ridiculous. He hasn’t kicked a ball for 6 months and plays for a relegation battling side. Don’t get me wrong he’s good but 80m???

There’s a real lack of proper goal scoring centre forwards, he’s English and proven goal scorer at premier league level in his prime, It’s a lot of money but very difficult to find better at the moment.
January 3, 20242 yr I mean if Arsenal are odds on favourites and we are rank outsiders, maybe Toney will choose us after all

Brentford also battling relegation. Toney genuinely saves them.
