So we paid £50 million ish for this guy who manages 30odd minutes in a season and yet we sell Billy Gilmour for a fee rising to £9million

who is now a mainstay of a Brighton midfield ...amazing work TB with TT

I will never for the life of me understand this Gilmour obsession, he is a mediocre premier league footballer at best but the way some of our fans speak about him you'd think he's close to a move to Real Madrid.

I like Gilmour but I'm inclined to agree. Many big him up when he has a great performance but overlook the many games where he is pretty average. Very tidy and intelligent player but a bit lightweight and often goes missing, so think Brighton is the right level for him to be honest.

Agreed, but at least he's not a walking sick note.

Don't think he's mediocre but I get what you're saying, definitely overrated by many on here.

Gilmour was never going to take off at Chelsea because he still needs time to develop. I think there is a good player there though he's just very lightweight.

I think it's less about the quality of the player and more about wondering what was the point of replacing him with expensive players who don't even play.

It's like with Tammy. Would he have turned into a world beater if he stayed? Probably not. But we sure as hell would have been better off keeping him than signing Lukaku. Then again, hindsight and all that.

The football we played under Tuchel was tailored for Gilmour in that midfield 2. Possession based.

The fact Tuchel removed him, only to put Gallagher there who quite literally isn't suited for such a role, will always be such a mystery to me. That Tuchel video of him getting annoyed at Gallagher for not playing the direct pass is always so funny to me. What were you expecting? 😂

I guess we'll never know how Gilmour would have developed at Chelsea. Which is a shame because he's more than holding his own in a Brighton team that has struggled this season.

He really wouldn't have been any worse than Jorginho, Kovacic, Lavia, Enzo, caicedo in our midfield. I remember when he played he was always a bright spot in midfield. Doesnt matter anyway, he's at Bohleys fetish club and im sure we could buy him back at a vastly inflated fee in future.

Brighton played in Europe and are above us in the league at the moment.

If Brighton is his level then he should have been good enough for us

With most of the threads about players being negative atm...

A special mention to this kid. He's been injured forever, comes into preseason and most of us have him in midfield already in our best starting 11. Nailed on starter if we didn't have 2 players worth over 100mil each in that area (I would still play him instead of one of them)

Just thought it would be a nice change from all the other doom and gloom posts on other players threads to have a positive one on the "recents" list. Lol

The kid has potential to be even better with more game time...

Well said. Think he’s been very good in preseason.  Had different partners every game, and a defense that can’t string 3 passes together. For a very exposed position he’s been good.

I have a bad feeling about his injury. Sounds like Maresca included 18 year old midfielder Harrison McMahon in tomorrow's squad.

A long term injury leaves us thin in midfield. Maybe holding on to Casadei is not a bad idea.

Alternatively, we could hold on to Trev who can cover in midfield and at right back for James if needed, but that's not going to happen sadly.

It's the "hopefully will be back after the international break" that confirms it for me. The fact that they can't tell for sure if they will be back or not tells me it's bad enough.

As for James, it will be yet another month out with a hamstring injury. Genuinely don't know what else can be done for him. The surgery hasn't worked.

I'm not a clinician, so I have no idea about their exact injuries apart from its their hamstring.

It's upsetting to even say this but James's time with us maybe coming to an end! He hasn't done anything and he's injured again. Maybe they took too long to get the surgery done so unfortunately it's just too late.

Poor lavia too...his issues need to be addressed asap even if it means surgery. If he just stalls like James until it gets too late then what a waste to an amazing talent. At least James has some very decent medals in his locker.

That's really unfortunate if he's out for a few weeks, especially it's not an injury resulted from a game. Against better teams, we aren't going to get away the midfield last weekend. We have midfielders, but not many options playing his role.

I don’t think we should get ahead of ourselves with Lavia’s injury. While disappointing and concerning, even Lavia posted he would be back soon.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic and blind to the last few seasons, but we’re due some level of normalcy with injuries.

A youth player as backup is a problem. Should have kept Ugochukwu around, although probably not enough minutes development long term had we done that.

We need to keep him fit, he's a perfect out ball from defence. He's confident in possession, he can turn away from the opposition press really well and he can pass the ball. He has everything you want from a player in that position. My issue is how long it's taking us to get the ball to him. Our defenders hold on to the ball way too long. Imagine if we consistently moved the ball out of defence to Lavia quickly, the opposition would get more and more worn down. We are just letting teams off by playing out so slow.
