Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager

Out with the old, in with the new. Potter really blew his big chance. In the short term it will be hard to imagine we can become worse off without him - for the long term we will never know, but I expect we will be fine.

Next manager is really important - particularly as it will show owners intent with continuing the reboot/reset if the team. I don’t want us to revert to type and go short term and the long term goal has to be focus.

Dont know enough about Nagelsman to draw any conclusions. Can’t see Zidane coming. Zero interest in Enrique or Pochettino. No desire to go back to conte or mou. Not a huge pool to choose from.

Personally I would love uncle Carlo.  But can’t see that happening.

Great managers need to be able to perform theatrics on the touchline to prove their worth.

Sadly Carlo is a great manager but without the one ingredient that really convinces,. The touchline dancing and waving moves .

It's an emergency interim, they aren't going to appoint someone who isn't already at the club.

Tottenham literally have Contes right hand man as their manager at the moment.

I'm not convinced that following Yottenham' s lead on managerial matters is something to be satisfied with

Unfortunately I am not sure who we bring in. Bayern Munich are the best team in Germany. We aren't the best team in England. It's easier job to win with Bayern in Germany than in England currently.

We are about the 4th/5th best on our best day at the moment, so we are asking for a lot to expect the next manager to win us the league. The last five seasons have proven we are not consistent domestically.

I actually have no idea who I want in.

My first choice is Flick but there's 0 links and doubt he leaves Germany before Euros.

And then maybe Luis Enrique? He is elite as well so I wouldn't mind him.

I'm not completely against Nagelsmann but can we really afford a gamble right now?

No thanks to Zidane, he inherited an all time great Madrid team, he doesn't strike me as an elite tactician.

It's not following Tottenhams lead, it's following the lead of every club that's ever sacked a manager.

We are the only club I can even think of who appointed an outside interim when we got benitez in that one time.

Actually I don't have a problem if we take our time in identifying the next manager, and just let the Interim get through the season. If the suitable manager only wants to start the new season, just wait for a few months. Be realistic about it, what's our chances of beating Real, City/Bayern, and likely Napoli to win the CL? Just finish the season off as good as we could get, start again next season, rather than all in on the next manager just for the sake of it.

I struggle to understand some of the logic here. How is Enrique elite while Zidane, Pochettino or Nagelsmann aren’t?

enrique had probably the best ever Barca team to work with.  Same argument against Zidane.

We are known for the new manager bounce effect. This lot can certainly be boosted enough to care and get deep in the CL with the right manager.

Who's we you called Chelsea fans you not us I'm pretty sure @Pottery and @Mudders are the same person man alive what an oddball.

Surely if we are creating so many chances lately and not scoring, the system was starting to work, no? The players can't put the ball in the back of the net though, so whoever comes in needs to bring some kind of voodoo magic as I don't believe it's just the coach. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Doesn't matter who is on the bench - Could have Ian Porterfield or Prime Jose Mourinho, and Cucu would still have had the brain fart header. Kepa still doesn't save Mcginns shot and Mudryk still misses 2x sitters

I'm pretty much in the same thought process for every manager you've listed here

The manager that solves that problem will be worth every penny of their contract. Unfortunately i don't think we have an owner or board that can identify who that manager is.

Think it was certainly right to let him go but Potter effectively coached a 3-0 win at the weekend. Was let down by the players poor finishing and individual errors. There gets to a point when it can't just be coincidence anymore though. Potter's inconsistent line ups and game management have lead to the players low confidence on the pitch. Sad it unfolded how it did as Potter was an exciting appointment, reminds me of all the high hope we had for AVB.

Confidence matters. Rudiger, Christensen were a complete mess for Lampard as well with individual mistakes left and right but ultimately it always goes back to the manager when it keeps happening.

It's a bit ironic that Potter last game for the club among other things involved:

Chilwell as a CB
James as a CB
Cucurella as a CB
RLC as RWB
Madueke as RWB
Pulisic at LWB
Mudryk at Striker

Just tinkering on a level we are likely to never see again. And for me it sums up his time here.

It's a shame, but this was a failed tenure when it will be looked back upon in the years to come. Very little positives can be found under Potter.

The owners can't afford to get the next appointment wrong, whoever we decide to choose.

Down from the stands during #Chelsea's draw against Nottingham Forest on New Year's Day, a member of Chelsea's backroom team went to double check with Graham Potter if any part of the tactical setup they had been working on all week had changed. It hadn't. Instead, Potter and his coaches concluded this was a team doing not what they were told, but what they wanted.

But that’s still on Potter

We had chances, but they hit the bar and missed a 1 on 1 before they even scored. So to say he coached a 3 nil is wildly optimistic. We couldve been 3 nil down before we had any of those chances.

That back 3 that made those errors was also picked by Potter, they have never played together, and according to reports in the build up, they didnt even train together, Chalobah was due to start.

This is the most patient I've ever seen this fanbase. Hopefully the next guy raises the standards again, because the acceptance of mediocrity that has set in, will ultimately be the reason we drop off as a big club.

Potter’s Chelsea departure explained, Nagelsmann link and Man United ‘credit card’

David Ornstein

Apr 3, 2023

Chelsea and Graham Potter parting ways was without a doubt the story of the weekend and there is a lot we will dig into and explain on The Athletic around it in the coming days.

On Sunday morning, even some members of the hierarchy were under the impression he would still be in charge for Tuesday’s Premier League game against Liverpool. But things changed rapidly, with Potter dismissed after just 31 matches in charge and the decision unanimous.

While we gather the inside story and find out what the club have planned next in the coming days, we’re going to use the start of this week’s column to explain how we got here (using a slightly different format from normal).

Why has Potter gone now?

Chelsea’s owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital felt results were too disappointing and were not seeing the progress they wanted. The team slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League table after Saturday’s defeat at home by Aston Villa, with Champions League football next season almost definitely reliant on winning this year’s competition, which is a tough task.

Despite being defiant in their backing of the former Brighton manager when results were poor either side of the World Cup, concerns have grown considerably in recent weeks and the club’s four key decision-makers — Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, director of global talent and transfers Paul Winstanley and technical director Laurence Stewart — weren’t seeing the progress they wanted. Chelsea have now won just four of their past 19 Premier League games, despite impressive performances in Europe.

Potter is believed to have taken the news, delivered face-to-face at the training ground, incredibly professionally and has agreed a severance package unrelated to the five-year deal he signed when he joined. Players and most other staff were not told in advance in order to avoid leaks.

What about Tuesday against Liverpool?

One of the unusual parts of Potter’s departure is that most of his backroom staff will stay in place until a successor is hired. This is something Potter has supported. That means former Brighton defender Bruno will be in charge of the team for the home game against Liverpool on Tuesday and possibly after that. Bruno worked under Potter after retiring in 2019 and the Spaniard moved to Stamford Bridge alongside him earlier this season. The board wanted some consistency and believe the infrastructure is there to bounce back in the league and compete against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final.

Will Chelsea be moving fast for Nagelsmann?

Julian Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich last month and has already been linked with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. At this stage, it is unclear where, if at any of these clubs, he will end up and Chelsea were insistent on Sunday night that they will be taking their time and ensuring the search for the new head coach will be exhaustive and thorough — and that they have yet to speak to any candidates for the permanent position.

Like most clubs, they do have a list of managers they admire but that will be updated in the coming days and weeks. The possibility of all the above sides looking for a new head coach prior to the 2023-24 season means competition will be high, but Chelsea feel removing Potter now may give them a headstart on the likes of PSG and Real if they make a change.

Stewart and Winstanley will look to identify the head coach they believe can deliver trophies to a squad that has been assembled at enormous cost and then make a recommendation to Boehly and Eghbali.

Does this mean Potter is heading to Leicester or Spurs?

It’s far too early to say. Leicester have long admired Potter and Spurs held discussions with him two years ago but he wasn’t an option until Sunday night. Chelsea believe Potter will be better for the experience of the past few months and will go on to be a top coach but it is unclear at which level he will be welcomed back to the Premier League at this stage.

We will update you as and when we know more.
