On the other hand the frustration of the fans is understandable though. He has been really really bad for 18 months now. That said the abuse should go to the board for keeping him here rather than the player for being here.

The amount of personal abuse that is thrown at players who have helped us win lots of silverware I find unbelievable( I wasn't meaning you inparticular btw). Cahill and Ivan have granted gone over the top in performance levels but both have an attitude that a few other players within the team could learn from. Should they be in the team now? Definetly not, Cahill has had flaws within his game from the moment we signed him but has put in some good performances too. As I stated though earlier is now metally scarred and should be taken out of the team for his own good. However much I agree with your sentiments about respect. Cahill and Ivanovic have been a shambles since Tottenham in January 2015 and are damaging our club defensively.

I agree with our defence being a shambles, the game you highlighted is when a lot of chickens came home to roost. It has to be said though that them both being in the team now is not of their doing, they both are good professionals doing their best for the club( sometimes in life your best just isn't good enough), both have made individual mistakes that have been costly recently, unfortunatly it does happen. That said though the resaon they are still in the team is that the board and namely our director of football has failed to secure key replacements despite having three transfer windows to do so. I hate to borrow a phrase from George Osborne but we 'failed to fix the roof when the sun was shining'. The anger should be directed at the board instead of abusing players who have given us so much pleasure previously.
September 25, 20169 yr it is clear his confidence has completely gone. if he's dropped then perhaps we can forget about it recovering. I don't think the way we play should be change to accommodate a player who in the long term shouldn't be first choice, but then neither do I think we can afford to write him off for the season given the squad we have. we also have a situation where there is, IMO, a strong case for removing any or all of the four starters at the back. IMO I think azpilicueta is the only one conte should have in his long term thinking (as a first choice), but then JT is getting on, zouma is recovering from a serious injury and alonso may well not be the class of player we require. conte has a serious issue here. for me, for the rest of the season I guess I would want a back four of alonso, terry, zouma and azpilicueta, but there are so many issues to be addressed with whatever composition of defence we work towards this season. christensen alone won't be the answer either. not signing one of conte's choices for a new defender has hurt us already, whether or not you rate luiz and whether or not you think we had a realistic chance to do so.
September 25, 20169 yr I agree with @g3.7 but I'm listening to Rush while I do so. I don't know what that means.
September 25, 20169 yr If JT/Zouma is fit, I'm sure Cahill would't be playing. He's never a great player, we got him from Bolton on a bargain. It just happened he surprised many by stepping it up against the likes of Messi in the first few months. The disappointing thing about Saturday was, Cahill was kicking and screaming after that mistake, yet no one ( whoever the captain on the day was) pull him aside and give him a quick pep talk to ' f* forget about it and get on with the game'. No wonder we conceded 2 minutes later and Cahill was still in mourning mode.

He didn't, I was there that night vs Barca and he was out of his depth and the main reason Barca were creating so many chances.

September 26, 20169 yr I really don't recall him being this bad from his previous seasons, also he made direct mistakes that lead to goals from the opposition. He will be benched as soon as we have JT back i am certain of it, Ivanovi? also a loyal servant for the club should be benched for the benefit of the team.

September 26, 20169 yr Cahill is a decent CB, nothing more. The fact Luiz was sold in the first place when he was a superior player was a shame and we've gone and brought him back. Cahill has good technique but hes never been a ball playing CB and hes been caught twice in a matter of weeks f**king around with the ball, one wa a clear foul the other a terrible mistake but both incidents are easily avoided if Cahill was a better CB than hes been asked to be. Conte wants them to build from the back and Cahill doesnt have the ability to that. He paniced against Swansea and instead of booting the ball up the pitch tried to play his way out and turned into trouble, the very same thing happened against Arsenal, if hes making the exact same mistake hes only got himself to blame. Granted, the Ivanovic should have been closer to offer an out ball, same with Kante or Matic but if neither options are on, send the ball up the line, turning back against hyper quick attackers is inviting them in for a challenge and hes got his pocket picked twice because hes not good enough or comfortable enough on the ball to do whats being asked of him. IMO.
September 26, 20169 yr This isn't pretty - to be fair the first one was a foul, but still criminally slow etc

Yes he was fouled, that is a crucial & undeniable fact, but he also took a bad touch and was heading back towards his own goal with the ball, with a opposition player breathing down his neck; it always has the potential to go wrong. Said this after the Swansea game. Very similar scenario for Arsenal's first goal, expect this time without the foul by the opposition player. The result was the same, i.e. an opposition goal, the common deniminator in the situation of course being Gary Cahill. Always thought Cahill has been good enough for a place in the squad but not the starting 11. Recent performances putting even the latter in doubt in my opinion. Cahill & Ivanovic need to be taken out the starting 11 and replaced by JT (if fit) and Alonso with immediate effect. It simplay can't get any worse so let's give it a go. Zouma to replace Luiz when fit, who I would then push forward as the expense of Matic.
September 26, 20169 yr Looking at that video, everyone of those errors comes from cahill not being comfortable on his left foot, even with the poor clearance he should have gone with his left. Feel sorry for him tbh.

If we made such colossal mistakes in our jobs we'd be sacked.
September 26, 20169 yr On a sporting level. Yeah i do feel sorry for him of course. I didnt realize rich people were beyond sympathy! I also felt sorry for jt when he missed that penalty in moscow. Im sure cahill feels worse about those mistakes than any of us do. Im not defending him, they are horrible errors, nd he shouldnt be the team, but deserves zero personal abuse (not directed at you). Hopefully he is taken out the firing line this weekend.
September 26, 20169 yr After the swansea game I think he showed a lot of class in the post match interview and you could tell he was angry/disappointed.

He was blatantly fouled but for me he put himself in that situation, it's a mistake you'd expect (and tolerate) from a young defender, not a 30 yr old 'experienced' CB who should be leading by example. I'm grateful for everything he's given the club but based on England's performance at international level we should have binned him years ago.

Why not give Tomori a chance or Jay Dasilva on left back. Edited September 26, 20169 yr by dc19
