Lukaku to Everton

Featured Replies

Could you imagine this place if he went on to say Spuds and went on to score 20 odd goals a season...

The way he made Jose out to be the reason he left Chelsea was unreasonable and not coming out and actually telling the truth was pretty 'unreasonable'.

He might have talent but he's not half as good as he thinks he is. He's very raw and a 19 year old had to take his place in the world cup so really that alone should remind him he's not ready or currently good enough to play as a starter for a top club.

Ambition I don't have a problem with but down right ignorance and arrogance I detest in footballers.

I'm not convinced that he blamed Mourinho or hid from the truth; here's what he actually said:

(5th October)

"I did not know if I would be playing for Chelsea so I asked the manager to let me leave. We spoke and I told him. It's unfair to criticise Mourinho for letting me go because it was my decision. He knows what he is doing. He has won so many titles and I have too much respect for him to wish anything but the best, but there comes a point where you must think about yourself to show everyone that you can shine and be one of the best strikers in the league.

I could have stayed and fought, but it was not about the competition. When you are a 20-year-old you need minutes. I lost my place in the national team because I did not play for a year with Chelsea. I want that position back. I want to be in a top team and play. You only get better if you play so the best thing was to leave.

He'd called me into his office 10 days before the end of the window. I did not want to tell him what I wanted to do at that point, but he was very open and direct. I always wanted to work under him and even the time in pre-season he taught me lots I'm grateful for but I had to make a choice."

Then, the quote Mourinho reacted to with the "he likes to talk" line:

(29th November)

"I was watching the games this week and I miss European football a lot.  I would like to be successful at Chelsea but I have to work and grow and be a better player and then at the end of the season see what is the best decision for my career. It's a bit strange at the minute, the last time I heard from [Chelsea] was a couple of months ago."

...which is exactly what he's done.

Also, I don't think it's fair to hold his World Cup performances against him too strongly, there are world-class players who had utterly awful tournaments (e.g. Hazard). In addition to that, the decision to drop him for Origi backfired badly, as Belgium went on to score a grand total of zero goals without Lukaku on the pitch. After bringing him on against the USA, Belgium scored within three minutes and Lukaku himself scored after fifteen. Against Argentina, Origi didn't even last an hour and was hauled off after 59 minutes of total anonymity. In the half an hour that followed Lukaku had as many touches and more shots than Origi managed in twice that time. Clearly it was a mistake and one that was rectified too late.

Obviously we would all love him to staple a Chelsea flag to his head, but given the circumstances, I really don't see what is so unreasonable about Lukaku's behaviour. I would love him to stay, I would hate him to leave, but I certainly don't begrudge him taking the decision seriously and trying to do what he thinks is best for his career. If anything it's refreshing to have a discussion about player loyalty without money coming into the debate at any point!

Well said Plokoon. I like your novel approach of using actual quotes to back up your points rather than creative paraphrasing, maybe it'll catch on.

Perhaps he has gained a bit of humility after his mediocre World Cup and won't be opposed to being second choice at a top club?

Throwing in the odd fact (e.g.the one about Belgium with Origi in the line-up) is another innovation that might be quite welcome on this forum in the future.

I'll say again, all Mourinho has to do is sit Lukaku down, explain to him how he sees him. If Mourinho wants him to stay then I'm sure he'll have the pursuasive ability to manage it, look at Eto'o and Fabregas who both had run ins with him.

If Mourinho doesn't think he's worth it then I'm excited to see exactly who he thinks is good enough to lead the line. Because if sure ain't bloody Torres and his orange soda loving mate Ba

Crazy how people have made up things or jumped to conclusions as far as Lukaku is concerned.

Made up...they are from as reliable quotes as plokoons quotes however I liked his post.

Me and most of here would love him to succeed here but I'm still not sure he is the type we are after. If you compare him to Costa Lukaku is probably slightly faster running but at any other skill Costa is better. I think we are all tired of hearing about his first touch but it is a let down for him especially if we face the parked bus.

I think he has said things which would suggest he is very good, he wants to win titles, he wants to fight for his place but still he is considering leaving Chelsea. Be more humble. Say you are not ready. Be a man.

If Lukaku is sold, then who would people replace him with? It looks like Mandzukic is going to atletico, and morata is heading to Juve, so who would people like to replace him with?

Bony, remy, benteke, balotelli?

I hope he stays, as I don't think there's much available, and I hope we don't go into next season with costa/ba/torres.

Certainly sounds like he wants out.

“I am 21 and I have been loaned for the last two seasons. Thibaut Courtois was loaned for three seasons and will be without doubt the first-choice Chelsea goalkeeper.

“And Kevin De Bruyne has been transferred permanently to Wolfsburg. They are free in their heads - it is not my case. That would free me totally.”

“I don’t know - there are several clubs that are interested,” he said.

“I need to make a good decision to reach the absolute top so that I can score a goal like Higuain against us. It is a dream for every attacker.

“Higuain has evolved slowly into becoming a top player. I want to show what I can do and play in the Champions League with a big club.

“The decision will soon be taken. I have some ideas but we will have to see what is best for the clubs. I don’t want to negotiate before the clubs have come to an agreement.”

It's funny he should mention higuain, who ironically wasn't first choice til leaving madrid for napoli in the summer. Patience is a virtue.

I honestly think the way he was treated that first season, has left his opinion on the way our club is run, very negative.

I mean we payed 12m for one of the hottest prospects in the world, but we didn't give him a single start despite our misfiring forwards, left him out of the champions league squad, and had him play with the reserves.

Regular football or a title challenging team? I'm sorry, by his current standard, I don't think he could have both. I like the guy and want the club gives him a go, but for a guy at his age, he's really 'talking' a lot, and we all know Jose doesn't like a talker off the field. He's no where near Hiaguin, the better he realise it the better.

When an old pro is asked about a young and up coming player you usually get the usual superlatives. If he knuckles down he can be well add your own cliche. On 5live a couple of years ago Nico Classen was asked can Lukaku be a top player he replied no straight of the bat. When Classen was asked to elaborate he just said well talent and temperament he's not strong or good enough. The thing about Lukaku is he talks a good game and there's nothing wrong with that but scoring against the U.S.A. when they were dead on there feet is not exactly a ringing endorsement. For what it's worth i agree with Classen he's not good good enough now. Will he be our centre forward well put it this way if your young and can't shift Torres you should have a good look in the mirror.

If these latest latest reports are accurate, he needs to get a grip, he may have scored goals for WBA and Everton but when teams set up against Chelsea it takes on a different meaning; clearly the Belgian hierarchy didn't think he was good enough to start, he is not a complete player by any stretch of the imagination, although he imagines he is the best thing since sliced bread. Instead of moping around and gobbing off he should either knuckle down and and really show Jose what he thinks he can do or f**k off and find a 3rd rate CL team to play with.  If Chelsea are working on a deal somewhere to off load him………hurry the f**k up.

Algeria played deep against Belgium and Lukaku barely saw the ball. Tweet from the game:

0 - Romelu Lukaku failed to register a single touch in the opposition area during this match. Hooked #belalg. He was subbed at 57mins, Belgium went on winning 2-1.

Against Russia:

Romelu Lukaku: No player had fewer touches in #BELvsRUS in 57 mins than Lukaku (16) #bel

8:15 PM - 22 Jun 2014. Admittedly Russia not parking the bus but Belgium not playing counter attacking game not fast attacks, Lukaku completely out of the game.

Against US Lukaku came on for extra time where he faced a stretched and tired team and immediately he made an impact. He had the space to run and the passes to run to.

In Prem we would only get to play that game against a handful of teams; ManU, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton..

Wilmots learned it after 2 games, Jose already knows it.

He thrives on space to run in to. We've known that for a long time. I wanted it to work out, I really did, but his attitude pisses me off. He seems to think he's some world class striker.

Get £25M for him and I'll be happy.

Put it this way, he's been our most successful loanee...I'm sure there is some confusion about his role. Costa arrives does that mean toss-up during summer training to see who leads the line? Costa, Lukaku, Torres

Just sell him. He will bad mouth the club and then he will move on to talking rubbish about the club who buys him and pays his wages.

If he thinks a top team will splash out to buy him then he is mistaken. He has a poor attitude and isnt as good as he thinks he is.

You have to ask yourself is the juice worth the squeeze? With Lukaku the answer is no.

I understand the point you are making but I would argue our most successful loanee has been Courtois, who is now regarded as one of the World's best players in his position.

Lukaku although much improved from when we bought him would struggle to get into the starting line up of most top clubs.

Is it not just easier to have Schurrle as one of the strikers; maybe even have him alongside Costa, similar to how liverpool played with SAS.

You could have an attack similar to this:

 Schurrle    Costa    Willian/Oscar

                 Hazard

Oscar seems to play well for Brazil on the right wing. He puts in dangerous crosses and can link up well, which would be ideal, especially with Azpi using his pace to run behind the wing backs.
