I cant be the only one that saw Matic calling for Chelsea to go on a winning streak and thought "You of all people should be focusing on getting your own game right, never mind issuing rallying calls to the rest of the squad!"

If Matic was at last season's levels then maybe we'd have half a chance of winning 10 games in a row... but when he's contributing f**k-all he should probably keep quiet...

Considering the other areas we need to strengthen in the team, its obvious we cant sign more than one defensive midfielder which will be Naingollan or Kante so i will still like us to keep both Mikel and Matic around.

But if Juventus are really serious about getting Matic for 20m, i will swiftly take the money right now!

Just after one bad season we try to sell him.

 

People really have short memories, don't they? Player of the year a couple of seasons ago and now people want him gone. Compare him to say, Oscar, who hasn't performed since that game against Juve pretty much. He is expendable.

 

I want Matic to stay, I want to see what Conte does with him.

If he can be rehabilitated, then we have the best midfielder of his type in the league.

Just what on earth has happened to him? No major injuries, in his prime years, Jose is gone so he couldn't point to him anymore...

It's the biggest mystery of the season.

I wonder if this is the first negative of his career and its just smashed his confidence. Everything so far had been up and up, then this huge low.

He used to play best when we had loads of possession and were pushed up the field, he was a specialist at breaking down counter attacks high up the pitch.

 

But since we have lost our capability to hold the ball for longer periods, he has nose dived into a very ordinary player.

I think I share your view. Looks like he is that type of player that thrives in a dominant team but finds it difficult to show his quality in a struggling team

I think he's just been found out to be honest. The opposition know his weaknesses now and they have been exposing it all season.

 

His biggest weaknesses is that he is so one footed, has poor mobility and looks clumsy when closed down. The opposition have been taking advantage of this all season.

 

All season we have seen zero improvement from him. I personally don't think we will ever see the best of Matic again.

Agreed.

 

I also think his confidence has been knocked completely. He could have had two potential leg breakers done to him by Barnes and on international duty for Serbia.

 

Since those games, he's never been the same.

I would have to agree Scott. At his absolute best he was a great ball winner and screener of the back four. But that was pretty much it. He wasnt a bull going forward like Essien, nor a beast in the air, and he really should be with his height. And totally one footed.

I'd be keeping him. Having a left footed option in midfield is a positive as is his height. He has struggled a bit since Ericken gave him the runaround against Spurs last year and teams after that have worked out how to pull him out of position in a similar style.

That said part of that comes down to structure which has meant he (and Mikel more recently) are too often left to cover too much ground between a high press and deep defensive line with Fabregas doing little to assist. Once that is fixed hopefully by the purchase of Nainggolan and a proper structure from Conte I think he can get back to his best again.
