December 29, 20196 yr I for one always wanted Emerson to be our starter, but even I now realise he isn't good enough.

December 29, 20196 yr Game after game he is a liability. Not having the "Alonso is injured he is the only option" argument. Dave may be poor going forward but he puts a shift in. He can play on the left. James or Lamptey or Maatsen would offer more. We have better options. Cut him loose.
December 29, 20196 yr Club should have listened to Conte and gone all out for Alex Sandro - hey @TomCFC85?

I don't believe Emerson was subbed off because of his play - it more of a strategic move by Super Frank to add another midfielder into the mix - as it turned out it was a brilliant decision by the Gaffer

The game has moved on and the modern fullback has to be good at both ends of the pitch. At best; Dave is solid defending, but average going forward as things stand. Lamps might as well use the Cup game at the weekend to evaluate Lamptey & Maatseen, you just never know. The pair of Trent Alexander & Robertson cost Klopp less than £5m, with the former a youth team player.

Emerson was woeful, he thinks he can get away with just coasting through games, well not today and I doubt Lampard will be giving him another game any time soon.

December 29, 20196 yr Emerson is about as well suited to a wingback spot as Alonso is to left back. Definitely in need of some upgrading on that side.
December 29, 20196 yr We mustn't forget a couple of games this season Alonso should have been hooked after 30 minutes, and indeed was hooked at HT during one game. Lampard just decided to be more ruthless today. Neither of them are good enough to be our LB.
December 30, 20196 yr The guy's been here for almost 2 years, just never proven himself to be good enough, happy to cut him loose if there's interest from Italian clubs. Against good players, he just looked completely out of depth defensively, once in a while he puts in some good crosses or a corner, but never consistent.
December 31, 20196 yr He hasn't played many games for us overall, my impression is that he can join the attack well, has pace to burn but hadn't been tested too much defensively. I think a large part of his game this season where he has become a regular for the first time has not been noteworthy or average. Against Arsenal he was the weak link and had no where to hide and there was a shocking lack of effort to the point where it looked like he couldn't be bothered to sprint. So my impression really is that he's pretty average and has been thrust into a starting spot despite being signed as a backup and had one bad game, is it just me or is there more to moan about that escapes me?

December 31, 20196 yr Emerson is in his third year with us and he got a total of 3 assists and 0 goals in the Premiere league. Yes a LB shouldn't really be counted on those stats alone but when he plays we also conceded quite a bit. And no wonder in the Europa League with weaker oppositions he looks better.

I would argue in the modern game if you are good going forward, you can more than compensate for your deficiencies defending. Look at Trent Alexander & Robertson for example; no one really highlights the defensive part of their game as their output offensively is so good it masks it.

Yep TAA in particular makes quite a lot of mistakes, but he's so good going forward nobody mentions it. James is really good going forward, that's why I say pick him regardless of the mistakes he made, Emerson on the other hand isn't doing enough going forward.

January 1, 20206 yr Hopefully this is true: https://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/chelsea-fc-transfer-rumours-news/2019/12/31/21044505/inter-milan-set-to-offer-25m-for-chelsea-left-back-emerson-report
January 1, 20206 yr 25M for Emerson is a no-brainer even in today's inflated market. Apart from the fullbacks we have been linked with, maybe there's another 18 year old young Chelsea LB we weren't aware off, until we vacate Emerson's spot in the team.
