I wish Klopp had signed him and we managed to steal Jota instead with all the hindsight 2020...

Why? Jota would almost certainly have the same issues here as Timo

The Timo against Southampton is the player I believed we were getting, so there is still hope yet. I'm just being optimistic here people 😁.

Are we going to  play soton again next week ?

Jota takes one or two touches to control the ball. Werner takes four or five. Jota is good in tight spaces. Technically they're miles apart.

Disagree mate, Jota for example has most headed goals in the league this year. Compare that to the open goal Timo put on the bar against Southampton.

Will indulge myself slightly - as many know I have been a huge advocate for Werner playing. Not because he is quality on the ball but because I think he makes things happen for us as a team, and is an "enabler" for others.

Thought he was brilliant tonight. A goal and an assist to drag us into the lead, and left the field with us 3v0 ahead. Generally looked as if he had the Madrid backline petrified of his movement and pace.

Well done for a cracking effort Timo - never stopped running, and a bit of quality in 2 big situations. Some on here predicted you would fluff your lines if given a game....chuffed for you that you proved them wrong!

Indulgence over.... for now. 🙂

Well done Timo, please use this as a springboard to relaunch your career.

I think he has a totally different season, probably similar to Havertz, if management simply left his position alone, instead of buying the big oaf.  That hurt Werner´s confidence even more, although he just started every knockout game for the CL winners.

Be interesting seeing what happens in the summer.

Played well tonight and really pleased he managed to get some reward with the goal. But still a long way to go to convince me he has the quality we need.

I still don't think it will ever happen for him here. It's like I said in the match thread, he's a system player. Unless we build the team around his strengths, basically like what Leipzig did, then he will always struggle. I don't expect us to ever do that though and I don't want us to either. It's too limiting to build your team around 1 player.

This is a big reason why I really disliked Sarri's management. When he first arrived, everything he did was build the side around Jorginho, everybody had to be in sync with Jorginho's game, but as soon as Jorginho started to struggle, it collapsed and we ended up getting smashed by Arsenal, Bournemouth and Man City.

I gave up on Timo a few weeks ago because I thought his interest was completely gone and the effort wasn't there anymore, but international break made wonders to him and he's back to giving his all and creating chaos for the opponents with his movement. As long as he keeps that up he's a starter for me until we can buy another winger.

And I don't think we need a revamp of our system to make him come good, just need us as a team to play with that same desire to score, to play balls with purpose. Kova found his run tonight, RLC missed plenty of chances to do the same. Really hoping Gilmour and Gallagher gets their chance next season.

What would such a team look like?

FC Chelsea

E. Mendy - Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rüdiger - James, Kanté, Jorginho, Chilwell, Havertz, Mount - Werner

 What would it achieve?

😉

Seriously though there was a scene in the first game after about five minutes, where Havertz pressed Courtois, Mount closed down the left outlet and instead of attacking the right outlet player, Pulisic lazily backed off and Madrid easily played through the press. This simply does not happen with Werner. Werner is just a relentless animal. The system simply does not work as well without Werner. Maybe you go and find a better Werner like Liverpool eventually replaced aging Firmino with Jota, but the equivalent of what Chelsea did with Lukaku, would be Klopp buying back Benteke. 🤣

I think it can, and it’s no coincidence his best patch has come without Jorginho in the side. Stick him in that Madrid side with Modric’s quality in the middle, and he will score a lot. Jorginho demands the ball, and slows down the pace of our game.

Yes sarri built around jorgi but we struggled not because of Jorgi directly.

Sarri utilized simple circuit football and once our opp understood how we play it was easy to neutralize.

He looks a totally different player for the past week, don't know what has happened, not only plays well, but his body language is different, too, confidence looks to be at Leipzig levels once again.

As "bad" as he's been, ever since Tuchel came here, Werner Havertz Mount looked the most balanced and efficient attacking line Tuchel has used.
