Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea - and gone again!

Featured Replies

I said Thomas Tuchel would need Romelu Lukaku and so it is proving. The overzealous nonsense by the Chelsea manager in sanctioning the Belgium striker after he fell for the flattery of an interviewer in Italy almost cost Tuchel and the club. Instead Lukaku apologised when other strikers of similar calibre might have put two fingers up to the manager and made for the exit. All credit to Lukaku, who has knuckled down and worked his way back to form with regular appearances, which is all the £97.5m player wanted in the first place. Lukaku led the line brilliantly against Palmeiras and was instrumental in Chelsea winning the Club World Cup for the first time in their history. Not a bad return.

I thought he had awful game in the 1st half. Like I said before, I am done with Lukaku as target man he is so bad at it but in 2nd half where we finally play 2 up top and he received the ball on the right, it was so much better

To me it’s quite clear that Lukaku is not on the same page with creative ideas. Could be said of our entire attack but just looking at Lukaku, I think the loss of James and Chilwell hurt him the most. Even at wingback, they were two of our most creative and dangerous attacking threats. Without them, we are really easy to defend.

Hes missed a few this season like anyone does, but lately he’s been converting the good crosses he’s received. When is the last time someone sent him through like Kovacic did in the Villa game early in the season? To me, I don’t see much that has changed in regards to his form and effort compared to the early part of the season. In fact, he was putting in man of the match performances just prior to the interview coming out.

I think the interview has caused a hyper focus on his form, which is fine. But if you remove the bias due to that interview and just look at his performance over the course of the season, I don’t see much change at all.

Since new year alone Mount literally gave him two tap ins against Spurs and he made a hash of both. He had a two chances put on a plate for him in the cup aswell as the Ethiad and Amex. He a tap in against Plymouth aswell if he gambled. The service excuse is exactly that.

Ironically his bout of Covid then his interview inadvertently allowed us to use him how a player of his skillset should be used. Impact sub away at Villa, starter at home to Brighton (although he should have been brought off around the hour mark) and well away from the team sheet against Liverpool.

Noticed the quality of his one touch passing game, he set up players for shots from outside and inside of the box but our finishing is bad. Wonder what are the odds of him scoring against Palace...

I literally mentioned that he has missed some. You expect him to score every single time? My point was why don’t we play more forward passes to him, such as the two against Villa which led to him scoring? When’s the last time we had a devastating counter attack? We play slow and that isn’t ideal for Lukaku and many others - and I think the biggest reason for that is we are missing our WBs.

This thread is depressing, sorry for my optimism.

Call me old fashioned but I feel the higher the price tag and closer to prime age they are the more expectations they should be held too.

If Rom was a 20 year old academy product or an Eto'o esque stop gap (and worked hard) then the thread would be less "depressing" as you put it.

For the same reason we didn't play more forward passes through to Werner last season.

1) Teams sit deep against us

2) Our team don't negate the sitting deep tactic and move the ball faster

3) Even when there are opportunities, our players either lack the creativity, vision or mindset to play the ball. The number of times Kante, Azpi, Jorgi, Kova, Mount fail to play the early slide rule pass into space is astounding.

Champions League Football GIF by UEFA

I dont care if he scores the winner today, for the love of god can we stop starting him!

This whole thing where players have to forced into the starting line up because of contractual details regardless of form is  one of the things killing football.

United know enough about that. He is dreadful.

5 games without Lukaku we scored 16 goals against Palace, start Lukaku and get a narrow 1:0 win despite of him having 5 touches whole game. Pretty weak performance and it can cost us top 4.

So tired of this guy.

He's physically gifted but doesn't utilize any of his abilities at all.

All he ever does well is pointing and joking with the opposition.

He is the worst striker to belong in a top club
