May 1, 20224 yr Hope Everton go down and we can then snap up Pickford. Would be a good upgrade in goal for us imo.

May 1, 20224 yr It would be so Everton right now to beat Utd and Chelsea, only to lose their next 4 games then beat Arsenal and get relegated

May 1, 20224 yr Would be sort of funny if we.blew out of the top 4 right at the end having been there all season. Bit like Leicester did last season. With 3 of the last 4 at home, even though our home form is poor, we will face a Wolves side already on the beach, a Leicester side safe in mid table and a Watford side already relegated. So o don't see our place in the top 4 being lost simply due to the lack of quality we face. That and Spurs are getting beat next weekend. Banker. So most they can get is 9 more points and we have 5 points on them. So very difficult for them to overtake us. I expect we are Charity FC for Leeds though. Edited May 1, 20224 yr by axman2526

It doesn't help that we have a few players who already know they are leaving at the end of the season too. If we had better coverage I would say they shouldn't be playing for us any more. Either way Tuchel should be telling the entire squad that over the remaining league games they are playing for their starting spot in the final. On current form can any player say they deserve to start? Don't count your chickens on that one either.

The difference between then and now is the effort levels and pace. We weren't playing slow back then, we were playing with a ton of pace. The midfield were playing forward with a purpose. Balls over the top, balls played through defences, now it's just pointing, playing slow, sideways passes that just end up going back to the keeper. The amount of times I see it go out wide just to see the ball played backwards or for one of our full backs to allow a defender to put a tackle in is infuriating. James is one of the best crossers of the ball in the world, but he takes f**king ages to just get it out of his feet of late. What is taking the team so long just try something that actually gives us a chance of scoring? They were doing it game after game at the start of the season, but as soon as Chilwell got injured, they all just stopped playing. Kante, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, they try these bursting runs from deep, and at the start of the season they would keep driving forward, but as soon as they get close to a defender these days, they sh*t themselves, stop, and play sideways. I can remember Kovacic even creating goals at the start of the season, that kind of play has disappeared completely from our game since November. There isn't a single player that tries playing through the defence anymore, they have just stopped trying. I have seen Tuchel make a lot of changes to the team, even changing the formation at times, but one thing remains, the slow, not even half hearted performances. Great post

Kind of agree with you but then that’s what the squad is for. Players will eventually tire and have bad spells so others need to be kept keen and ready to step in. If throwing in Lukaku for the odd cameo is a way of getting the best out of him then it’s just not working. We all knew today would be physical. It was like a repeat of all our recent defeats at Goodison.

May 1, 20224 yr Going back to the start of the season. To open the scoring was either a set play or a defender scoring. Our forwards were hardly scoring opening goals, so it masked the issue we have now.
May 1, 20224 yr What do we do at the moment? We have a big question mark over us about ownership, then there are players in our squad who look like they don't want to be here, players in our squad who definitely won't be here next season, and it feels like they're all just waiting to cruise home into the top 4 and get to the FA Cup final for the one potential moment of glory. It's gonna be an interesting end of the season and an interesting transfer window. There is much dead wood within our side, we need major surgery to make us competitive again. May 1, 20224 yr Think it’s important, as miserable as last few weeks have been, to keep perspective. We’re not sh*t. We’re not playing great, but we’re not a woeful side either. I just think there is a combo of a post Real Madrid devastation hangover and finding it hard to get up for league games when knowing they can’t win the title. Yes I know top 4 isn’t secure and people will argue that it shouldn’t come into it. But the psychology of football is huge and we’re just on a bit of a Debbie downer at the end of what has been a long hard season. That combined with teams taking every chance we gift them and is needing 6 chances minimum to score one, it’s the perfect storm. we have comfortably been the third best team this season. Sp*rs and Arse are flattered to be so close. But we obviously have to wake up very quickly to get the job done. Hopefully this week off will help re-energise everybody for the run-in. At lest these poor results may also wake everyone up to need to refresh the squad, if new owners provide the funds. If we’d finished well clear in 3rd it might have fooled everyone into thinking not much surgery is required. Edited May 1, 20224 yr by The Brit
May 1, 20224 yr Strange thing is today Tuchel played what he seems to have settled on as his strongest side minus Kante. Only problem is he probably should’ve rested Havertz and Werner who played on Thursday and were pretty dreadful today. Maybe he was trying to build up momentum for his strongest team for the Cup Final rather than play the best team for today’s match. I’ve noticed that with Tuchel. He often picks a side with the next game in mind. Instead of the best team for that particular game. He did it against Brentford and Arsenal recently when we got stuffed. And in a strange way he picked the wrong side today with the Cup Final likely in mind. He just needs to pick a team to win the game in front of him. Sometimes you can be too clever. That’s not to say we’d have won the game today if he’d rested a few and played maybe Pulisic, Lukaku, Chalobah, Ziyech. But it’s a better use of squad resources than playing the usual suspects to death.

May 2, 20224 yr That Chelsea team on paper today should have easily beaten Everton. There is a malaise in this team for sure, but let's not forget who picks the side and decides the game strategy week in, week out. I don't think that there are too many players in our side, or any side, that would prefer to play possession based football for the sake of possession; the game is about scoring goals and winning, we know that, the players know that. Since the injuries to Chillwell and James TT has continually tried to play the same way with players that just aren't capable, Alonso a case in point although he's not the only one. Thank goodness it's the end of the season, I can't stomach this dross much longer; While he may use the excuse that this team is not his players, it's irrelevant, any manager coming in to any club is going to inherit players that may or may not suit the way they want to play; Our midfield has been sh*t for a couple of years, especially since TT came in, no goal scorers among them and no one that can take a game by the scruff of the neck to alter the outcome, which is bad enough but when you have forwards that between them cost over £200 mill can only score in single digits for the season, then the expectation should be no more than a mid-table finish. Yet for well over a season he has kept the same stale midfield. Is Barkley so, so bad he can't even get any game time yet was decent enough when Frank played him. While Saul may have been forced upon him, is he worse that what Jorghino has been dishing out of late? Dave is had a mare today and he's been out of form for most of the season, Captain or not he needs to be dropped. There is no freshness in this team, its stale and it stinks. While we may squeak into the top 4 it's hardly been a stellar season, forget the club world cup, we squeaked that against mostly 2nd rate opposition. My only hope is that we don't ship 4 or 5 against those twats from Liverpool in the Final as that will round off what can been seen as an unforgettable season.
May 2, 20224 yr I'm not surprised by the result. Our players have mentally checked out for the season, with the FA Cup final the only thing to play for outside of pride for ourselves. In contrast, Everton had everything to play for so they were always going to be up for it yesterday.

Winning the Champs League last season papered over a lot of cracks and gave some the false belief that we could even challenge for the title. While we have been unlucky with injuries, we also weakened the squad last summer. Lukaku was a bust but we allowed too many other potential squad players to leave, without bringing in additional personnel. That was always going to be risky if we ran into injuries and so it has proven. There are clearly several in the extended squad that TT doesn't trust to play any more e.g. Saul, Barkley. But in that case why not give some of the academy players a try in a league game here or there? Lewis Hall looked great in the FA Cup and was never seen again. Simons, and Vale have both done alright when given the odd appearance, and there are players like Soonsup-Bell that might add some excitement to the front line. At the very least those players could be expected to play with passion and pride in the shirt.

If we’d finished well clear in 3rd it might have fooled everyone into thinking not much surgery is required. We are the 3rd best team in the country that is obvious but this performance is not new or rare. Everytime we play team who park the bus, forget about creating chances, we don't look like creating any danger. Early season everyone said it was because of Lukaku. "We are this fluid interchange fast flowing super offensive juggernaut without Lukaku". It turns out with n without Lukaku it is the same story. The last time we played great against this kind of team was probably Burnley but that was after 45 min of snoozefest, then Reece decided to be Reece and we looked like a world beater Lukaku experiment has failed but clearly we needed to try something. Werner, Havertz n Mount frontline are great when you play team that give you space but when it is this kind of game 😔😔 Havertz was bullied by Mina the whole game. Werner works hard. Mount moved around and try to give us something but we need more. There was also question about our mid n wb. Alonso was alonso and how you want to use him in this kind of game is as extra target in the box. James had one the worst game I have seen him play. Jorgi was Jorgi, unless you are on the side that think that he is a wc/great player then that performance was fine. He moved the ball, had few interceptions, Ruben, I thought had a very good game, he was our only source of danger. Our sub did nothing but it was as expected. Kova looked like a half-fit player. Nothing to say about Ziyech n puli. The fact that we didn't bring Rom when our offense was about pumping random ball to the box shows that we are done with Rom. This is kinda the state of our team. When all of our starting 11 is healthy we are pretty good. Kova, James n Chil are probably our 3 most important players against packed defense. If one/two goes down or don't play well we need others to step up. So far no one has shown that they can do this consistently.
