Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Robin van Persie, Kerim Benzima, Carlos Tevez, Mario Gomez... Some of the greatest forwards in Europe, leading the lines of teams we consider to be rivals. Would any of them trade for Torres?

He has come on leaps and bounds since his arrival, but he set the bar extremely low to begin with. Now he scores a reasonable number of goals and makes a decent contribution to the team. But he is nowhere near adequate to replace Drogba, nor can he be considered "world-class" which a team with our ambitions needs to compete.

The argument was often made last season (including by myself), that he needed a more suitable supporting cast to flourish. Well, Roman went out and assembled the finest money could buy and he still struggles to impress. In fact, I feel like Torres looks out of his depth playing with our midfield trio; as if he isn't quite on their wavelength when he mistimes a run or tries a return pass that just wasn't on - breaking up what would have been an intricate thing of beauty. His decision making is frankly appalling for a striker of his supposed quality.

Somebody on here (I want to say youlots) suggested last season that Torres was a striker who relied entirely on his considerable physical assets which have now abandoned him; and because of his consistent string of injuries he never had an opportunity to develop as a player and learn to compensate his loss of agility and speed with more intelligent movement and positioning as Eto'o did for instance. This is an assessment I agree with entirely. He still relies on tools he no longer has which is why he looks so out of sorts.

I unfairly focus on the negative, but he has improved a lot. I am proud of his determination to do his best for us and I can't fault him for lack of trying. But he just isn't who we need any more than Darren Bent is. What bothers me most is our opponents are not even slightly afraid of Torres. Not the fans and not the players. Our opponents HATED seeing Drogba's name on the team sheet because they knew that he could single handedly wreck them should it strike his fancy. This is not so with Torres. He doesn't inspire fear. He doesn't force teams to overreact to his mere presence on the field. A striker with that quality leading the line often makes the difference between a good team and a great one. A CL finalist and a European Champion.

It was me. Stop forgetting.

The point I was trying to make back then wasn't that he wasn't improving, which he is, it's that it's a long and hard road for him to improve and it's unlikely he will reach those heights before age removes those faculties for good.

He got a goal, i'm happy for him. He tried his best as usual and i am thankful for his effort. But has all this changed my mind about him today.........no. I still think we need far more than this.

Perfectly said.

He scored today, hes been trying hard just about every game.

However, i do believe we need another striker in Jan to have more competition up front.

The lonely life of a striker...up front on your own running betwen the lines chasing the ball down across the park for 88 mins, holding up the ball, creating space for others to run into....and score a goal....and what praise does he get.....fuk all......who needs enemies when you got friends like us...I thought he deserved a bit of praise today and at least he had a couple of decent shots which was good to see. Let's see what he does against the 'Pool' on Sunday...you never know he just might surprise us a grab one..

Fernando Torres believes the years he spent playing alongside Steven Gerrard were the finest of his career to date.

gerrard torres

The pair formed an intuitive partnership during the Spaniard's three-and-a half-year spell at Anfield and at times during that period they proved one of the most electric combinations in European football.

And as the Liverpool skipper reached a landmark 600th appearance for the club, the current Chelsea No.9 spoke of his immense gratitude to Gerrard for the way he influenced his game.

"I think it's an amazing achievement for him [to reach 600 games] and it is very well deserved," said Torres.

"I enjoyed playing next to him for three and a half seasons. It was probably the best time I have had on a football pitch. I am who I am now thanks to him because he showed me the way.

"So I am happy for him and I am sure that he will play much more than 600 games for Liverpool."

During his time at Anfield, Torres prospered from Gerrard's vision, his movement and the Huyton-born midfielder's ability to deliver a killer pass.

And when asked to explain what marked Gerrard out as such a special player, the Spaniard explained: "He's a winner. A captain.

"He is the kind of player that everyone loves. He helps all his teammates and he certainly helped me when I arrived at Liverpool. I think he is the type of player that everyone should have at a club.

"Hopefully everything is going very well for him."

While he has many fine memories of Gerrard the player, forged through his indomitable partnership with the skipper, when asked to name a 'great Steven Gerrard moment', Torres plumped for an event which took place when the Spaniard was 21 years old and scoring goals for Atletico Madrid.

"For Stevie and for all the Liverpool fans, when they won the Champions League after coming back from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan was a great Steven Gerrard moment," he said.

"I think he should feel very, very proud of that achievement. But there are many more great things he has achieved. I think if you go to Liverpool and ask the people there, everyone will have a different memory."

Took this from a Liverpool forum.

Of course it was..

Gerrard was one of the best midfielders on the planet at that point and Torres was at his peak as a top goalscorer.

He really can't win on this forum.

He fails to score then he gets pelters and when he scores it was luck and won't happen again...

Never mind he set the tempo for our win and had more shots on goal last night than he has had all this CL season so far...

He has scored something like 17 goals in 30 odd games now since Robbie came in...is that really a bad stat?

It just looked weird. The ball zinged out and Torres did this little jump thing but the ball didn't look like it went near his foot. I'm going to have to look at it again, i had had a glass of wine.

It clearly bounced off Torres boot and went in the net.

It replayed the moment about 5 or 6 times....not sure how you could have missed it tbh.

I don't know if i'm missunderstaning that statement of Torres but i kinda take it as an offence. He plays now with Lampard Ramires Mata Hazard Oscar and still think Gerrad was the best? Ok maybe Rami Mata Hazard and Oscar aren't on the level Gerrad was on his peak but Frank Lampard? Frank Lampard is Gerrard x10.

Just because he is at Chelsea now does not mean this is his best time in football in playing terms, that is being very short sighted…

He already said winning the CL was one of the best moments of his career but what he is saying here was in footballing terms he was happiest when he was playing at his best which is hardly a surprise.

Anyone could see he was not worth £50 million at the time.

The club choose to throw it at Liverpool for a guy who was crocked at the time and has never recovered.

It's hardly the boys fault and he gives his all which is all you can ask.

We just have to get used to it - this thread is pointless.

Anyone can see Torres is not the player Liverpool had in his prime.

We were mugged for 50 million end of.

Fifty four pages, & the truth is finally said. ::clap2::

This should be pinned up somewhere on this site. 100% spot on.

Im one of Torres biggest fans, and can see he is struggling like hell, but shoot me down, apart from mata, and i love that midfield 3, what clear cut chances are being created, yea its looks pretty but clear cuts, got a way to go to play like shakhtar did last night, maybe Torres aint the answer, but Mikel is good, but slows play down massively which in turn means the tres amigos get slow ball, bring in Falcao, but speed the play up.

I think he's done, finished. He will never come close to being the player he was at Liverpool, and the sooner we realise this the better.

If we want to compete seriously at the very highest level, if we want to retain our Champions League title, and if we want to win the league this season, we've got absolutely no choice but to invest in a new striker.

(and yes, in case you were wondering, I'm just trying to reverse jinx him ahead of our game against Liverpool on the weekend!)

well the first chance of the match, when oscar crossed into the box, torres shouldve burried it. he didnt even manage to get a shot in

Then seconds later he chases a nothing ball and scores.....

Go and look at how many of RVP' goals are 'clear cut' chances, their not tap ins, Torres get's as many of those half chances as RVP does.
