Diego "the guv'nor" Costa

Featured Replies

Rumours of a 50m bid from Inter in January. Pointless article and don't know why they would bother writing it. No club competing for a title would sell their main man.

10 goals and 4 assists in just 13 games so far this season, beastly!

Does this top his form from his debut season?

11 goals and 5 assists for the season now.

Unstoppable!

Best player in the league right now.

Phenomenal performance (again).

Two things I've noticed that he seems to have recently mastered:

1) The Drogba-esque knack of clearing corners

2) Receiving the ball with his back to goal and still somehow managing to turn his man.

This is the best form I've ever seen him in. Hope he keeps it up, the lunatic.

Heh, neat rhyming there.

It's almost impossible these days to keep Costa out of games. You'd need to be bloody good to do so...

Said the same thing in the match thread.

Aguero has a worse disciplinary record than costa in terms of red cards, both have had retrospective bans, aguero for an elbow and costa for that 'stamp'.

The difference is how much aguero actually gets away with compared to costa.

But no matter how many career ending challenges aguero puts in, the media will always claim he isnt that type of player!

Just glad he got what he deserved today, and tbh, i think him and fernandinho should be looking at extended bans for what was one of the most ugly fracas ive seen in the premier league for a long time.

Anyways rant over, let these mugs resort to childish pettulant tactics while we romp to 6th league title!

Well anything looks bad if you don't put it in quotation marks!

costa is looking the real deal at the moment, we saw what he was capable of under jose but conte has really got him playing, dare i say focusing his anger into beating defenders by scoring against them and not by getting in their faces

I was one of those that would have been happy to see him leave, and I said so. Didn't think his heart was it, didn't like his antics, thought he was more trouble than he was worth. I didn't think he was worth all the aggro because I didn't think he was that good. I knew he was good, I just didn't think he was that good. Now I know different. He is f**king special. Our best player this season by a distance. The league's best player this season by a distance. Conte deserves a lot of credit for cooling him down and getting him focused and motivated but Diego deserves a lot of credit too. He's basically undergone a personality bypass. What a f**king player.

I actually thought that what Aguero and Fernandinho did was far worse than what Dembele did last season against us.

That lunge from Aguero was one of the worst lunges i have seen for some time. It was closer to being a dropkick than a football tackle. If Luiz leg was planted then it would have been a broken leg for sure, possibly career ending too. Aguero wanted to injure Luiz with that tackle, it's the only reason why he would make such a tackle. He deserves more than the 4 game ban that he will get that's for sure. It shouldn't have to cause serious injury just to get the ban extended. The intent alone was enough to warrant an extended ban.

Aguero has done this kind of thing twice to Luiz now. If he has received an apology from Aguero, he shouldn't accept it, i wouldn't that's for sure.

Fernandinho looked like a proper psycho the way he kept on grabbing Fabregas by the neck and pushing him. Usually the most you will see is a grab of the neck and heads coming together, but Fernandinho kept going for him.

I have never had a player take me to two utterly polarising opinions.

I was one of the people, along with Barack, who argued for us to sign him from Athletico. Not many on here had a good word to say about him then. In fact hardly any.  After last season I wanted him gone, more than anything, gone. I hated him. The faux hardman acting. The whining. The indifference. For me he reflected everything that was wrong last season. And to cap it all off his technique was sh*te. Control, passing, movement. sh*te, sh*te, sh*te. A total disgrace of a player.

The turnaround this season amazes me. He isn't anywhere near Drogba levels for me and probably never will. Disagree if you will. What went on last year I don't know but, right now, he is one of the best CFs currently playing and a major reason we are such a transformed side.

Like Davey says in his post above credit to Conte for showing faith and getting him focused back on the football. But credit to Costa too for being smart enough to take that on board and looking like a professional player again.

He's getting close just. Obviously Drogba did it in the big games and won everything with us, so Diego has a long way to go in that respect but in terms of level of performance and consistency, think Diego's up there. Remember also, Drogba basically went AWOL under Scolari, just as Diego went AWOL under Jose last year.

He isn't blessed with same physical assets Drogba had. Drogba was the best in the air that I have ever seen in my life. Period. He was phenomenal. His ability to hold the ball up front under pressure was only matched by Mark Hughes IMO, both of them immensely strong physically. And not only did Drogba score so many worldies, left foot, right foot, headers he was also the best defensive centre forward we have ever had.

But I don't want to make this about Drogba. I totally agree with the point you make about Costa's consistency this season. He is channelling his aggression the right way, through his work rate on the pitch, rather than picking fights, niggly fouls and whining at refeeres. He is completely transformed under Conte. It is great to see.
