Maurizio Sarri Officially Appointed

I’m glad he’s slinging to some of these players. Effort levels are a disgrace at times and some are genuinely nowhere near good enough. Mourinho, Conte and Sarri have all had this problem, all have different philosophies.

Why is it we always self destruct after winning the league?

One thing I will say, barring a few, this team of players are very dislikable at times.

No heart, no effort or character about them.

It's hard to disagree with anything Sarri or you are saying here. How often do we start a game like Arsenal did today? How many times have I and many others said that we start slow and take about 25-30 minutes to do anything of note?

Like you say, Mourinho, Conte, Sarri, they have all had this problem with this group of players now. I have some issues with this system Sarri is trying to bring into the team, by my god, the players are making it look much harder than it should be. Their attitude and approach to games stinks. They don't look motivated at all. Most of the time they look like they just turn up for a game and expect the win to be a sure thing.

I feel the same way as you, I find it hard to like this Chelsea team at times. I don't think there has ever been a group of players that I have found as frustrating as this lot.

And if Sarri thinks this is an issue with certain players, then it's on him to drop them. Tell them they're not getting back in unless he starts seeing them show some consistent motivation to win. If they don't like it, then they can leave the club, let somebody else worry about them. I don't care if it's Eden Hazard or Cesar Azpilicueta, if a player isn't motivated to play for Chelsea, then we don't need them.

Sarri completely out-coached today by Emery.

The problem is we all could have named today's team and how we would have set up. Arsenal knew exactly how they wanted to play us, they prepared knowing we wouldn't change one jot. He at present is showing he is easy to coach against.

Presser in text below:

Sarri: “I prefer to speak Italian first of all because I want to send a message to my players & I want it to be very clear. I don’t want to make a mistake with my English.” Switches to Italian...

Sarri translated: “I’m extremely angry, because this was due to our mentality. We played against a team far more determined than we were & this is something I can’t accept. We had a similar issue vs Tottenham”

Sarri translated: “It would appear that this group of players is extremely difficult to motivate.”

Sarri (still in Italian): “When you see this kind of a game, we can’t really talk about tactics. From a technical POV the teams are on the same level, but they were more determined than us”

Sarri: “It seems that as a group of players they’re not aggressive from a mental POV. It’s something difficult to change because you have to influence their mentality & that could take time”

Sarri on if his players should be fearing for their places. He says he wants to talk openly with them & says if they don’t have the mentality he needs them to have, they shouldn’t be playing at this level

Sarri: “I’m aware of the fact that this is never going to be a team known for it’s battling qualities, but we need to be a team that can adapt.” Adds they must be prepared to suffer for spells in games

If we finish outside top 4 this season, which looks distinctly possible at the moment, then that will 3 seasons out of last 4 that we have failed to make top 4. Also that is under 3 different managers. You can say what you want about Sarri and he certainly has to take some criticism in recent weeks. However the club has bigger issues. The big decisions are being made by non-football people and it shows. If Sarri goes and we bring in another new manager I am confident we will be back at this point within a year. Something needs to change.

He makes some valid comments but needs to back it up with action or the players become untouchable.  He criticised Jorginho after the Newcastle game but he played the full 90 again today and was again one of our problems.

unfortunately our players aren't "getting it" tactically.

I think our players do "get it" tactically. I think they took to "Sarriball" like ducks to water and our start to the season we played it pretty much perfectly.

I think other teams have come up with plans to stop it. They know how we're going to play, and frankly, they know the XI too.

There is nothing wrong with any of that per se, teams have game plans to stop other teams, and having a fixed starting XI is a statement of intent that you intent to "do you" rather than worry about them. The problem is, it's working for our opponents and not working for us.

Sarri is right if he gets results. He's wrong if he doesn't.

Rather than the players not "getting it", I think they are losing a bit of faith in what he's trying to do. I also think a few are questioning whether they are being used correctly. I don't think that decline is terminal though, and hopefully having a proper striker can refocus the team/give opponents something different to think about.

Sarri seriously questioning the players mentality at the official press conference. This could turn nasty.

I don't have a problem with this, but a lot of people say this is where it went wrong for Jose and Conte.

For me, sometimes you should tear into the players. Let it be known that "this" isn't good enough.

But it gets used in hindsight to criticise managers for "losing the dressing room".

I think the problem for us isn't a manager criticising the players or not, but that we constantly sack managers and the players know it.

Exactly.

If we can all predict the starting 11 and pretty much know which sub will come on and who will come off at what stage in the match, then he is playing right into the opposition coaches hands. He can't seem to think outside the box, it's all way too predictable and now he has the front to say players aren't right mentally. Well why do you keep picking them FFS?!

I'm also starting to fear making Zola No.2 might have been a bad move. Lovely guy, club legend and all that but is he just another yes man. We could do with having someone sitting next to Sarri who has the balls to say, "think we need to change things boss".

By positives I mean the process in general. There comes a time we gotta put faith in a manager. When top coaches and players speak highly of Sarri and also seeing his backstory and how much he improved Napoli, there's no doubting he's a fantastic coach. My problem is I don't trust our board and the group of players we currently have.

We will never progress as a club if we never show faith and support to a manager. We are sitting 4th, so at the moment I see no negatives. We are where we are supposed to be. We either accept this is a transition season or we hire and fire again, rinse and repeat and be even worse off as a club.

But you can be willing to show faith in a manager but also want them to adapt and improve.

This is what keeps being misconstrued on this forum, people criticising Sarri and our performances aren’t necessarily advocating sacking him but want to see him show some semblance of adaptability. A willingness to acknowledge when he’s preferred system isn’t working.

Don't be so silly , why would we want our manager to be a success?

I’ve made it clear I think Sarri needs to take responsibility for some of this but this is the 3rd manager in a row that we’ve had who feels let down by the desire/hunger/attitude of the players in the Chelsea squad. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

I think there’s definitey a few bad apples in this squad and I wouldn’t be surprised to guess a few of them.

This is where if the club are serious about changing the philosophy they should be releasing a statement to say that they 100% back the manager and any troublemaking players will be moved on.

Colour me surprised. This will go one of two ways.

What was surprising to me in this last game is that I have heard from many Napoli fans that Sarri practices set pieces with the team in many variations, like 20 different ways to use a setpiece or defend from it, and yet in this game from minute 5 Sokratis has a free header and is guarded by a short guy Kovacic, then after 10 minutes another clear header and Kepa saves it and just some minutes after that we concide a goal. I can understand that our attack is lacking a lot but our defense shows to be below average. And yet somehow even with this loss we are still ahead of Arsenal.

Well he already said we needed a replacement for Jorginho. Today there was not one because the board decided to sell Fabregas and bring in zero replacement. As is always the case with this board.

Maybe Emery borrowed a couple of Loco Bielsa's spies

We have seen it all before several times over. The squad will get what they want and Sarri will be dumped soon enough if this is indeed what is happening.

Very tough spot for us now, yes Sarri should have dropped certain players and although I defended him looking back now we should have perhaps had a striker today but this is the third time this group of players have had this issue, Jose's 3rd season and contes 2nd.

I'm not sure how we move past this, I'm all for Sarri telling them straight but this could lead us down the line of a slump down the table and a sacking. I fully believe that Sarri can be as good as people in football expect but the players are playing us into a bad spot, throw in his reluctance to drop misfiring players this doesn't look good.

If we sack sarri at the end of the season and lose Hazard and the heir to his throne CHO who is going to want to manage us.

We are notoriously for our severance packages so there will be someone to take it.

Historically but Sarri only has a 2 year deal looks like the board are sick of paying managers out.

Bye bye sarri. Nice while it lasted but our squad will down tools and whine to romans people again and that will be that.

Let's see who will down fully down tools and who will step and absolutely glad he's laid into the players. We need to get rid of quite a few, some might not like this but hazard included why because I believe subconsciously he's become complacent too.

We need a fresh rebuild similar to Klopp at Liverpool, but will he be given the time to do so, I,hope he does.
