Mason Mount

That should buy him another 4 or 5 matches of poor performances before people start deservingly criticizing him. Him and his PR team know what their doing.

He isn’t the only one mind. Too many players doing this to hide their continuous streak of horrid effort and performances.

Masons form has fallen off a cliff and, by merit, should should dropped. I don't question his effort though.

I actually like a player coming out and admitting things haven't been good enough.

It's a lose/lose at the moment. Mount issues a statement and people think its for PR, Mount stays silent and the same people would say he clearly doesn't care.

POTY 2 years in a row, i'll wait until post-WC to see how he performs before OTT criticism.

According to the papers he has rejected a 7yr contract. Why is Todd offering everyone this long contracts?

Why wouldn't we offer one of our better young English players a long contract? I wouldn't want to get rid of Mount. He is a chelsea lad and has served us well for a 23 year old.

He may be going through some form issues, but so is the whole team pretty much. When he's on form and firing, he is quality. There is no one better that wouldn't be A. Foreign, B. Very expensive, or C. Probably both.

No one is saying get rid of him, I just think fans got carried away with his performances last season which was an outlier, not the norm. He is a 10-15 contribution per season type of player; he isn’t a £200k/w+ player for me, max I would go is £150k/w.
Can’t remember a 6yr+ football contract ever working out. We have Kepa on the books on a 7yr contract we can’t seem to shift even though there is interest in him, Saul who was on loan here from Atletico also signed a 9yr contract Atletico can’t get rid of. If Mount’s development stagnates we will be stuck with a lengthy guaranteed contract we can’t shift because there will always be value midfielders in the market. The smart money is a 5yr contract + a 1yr option.

I read it has a lot to do with financing, FFR and other regulations as the longer the contract the less impact on the annual finances. Also means any sales will give most value.

7 years is still a bit much though, that should only be reserved for absolute superstars. 5 years max, and no more than 175k p/w.

Why, its nothing to do with status, its to do with finance.

I’ve been reading Liverpool are planning to grab him over all the contract stall. Granted it was a red top, but still!

Genuinely the last place I'd sell him.

He wouldn't need to score nor would he need to create chances at Liverpool. He'd be the engine in midfield that presses, wins the ball back, and is constantly provoking the opposition with his movement.

He'd be like an upgraded Gini Wijnaldum.

They wouldn’t pay him anything close to what he is after though. IMO It’s his agent putting this in the media to put pressure on the club.

He’s basically holding the club over a barrel because he knows fans love him and know they wouldn’t want him to leave and the clubs knows that.

Here is how this might play out, he will get a huge long term contract his performance essentially stay the same and fans then blame the club for being stuck with him on a long term contract hogging the wage bill.

Or he gets new contract start putting in good performances again and the everyone is happy!!!

It's really not common to sign a 7 year contract, I actually don't know any player that has done that in the PL.

But if there is a player you would think that would have taken it, that would be Mount I think?

He would be playing for his club till he's 30 at the very minimum. But I can understand that it's a double-edge sword, if he doesn't keep improving it would be difficult for him and it could change the relation with the club and fans so that maybe scared him off, still an extension of 4 years should be easy to make for him.

Now we have Gallagher capable of playing the exact same role hopefully we don't get bent over a barrell. As much as I want Mount to sign a new deal not at any cost when we have a perfectly good player that can fill that role in worst case.

I do think we need to pick between the pair at some point though, them on the pitch at the same time simply isn't working, far too much of the same strengths and weaknesses on display. Even if Conor is simply happy being a backup player going forward the fee he could command could help us fill an area of big need.

I'm not sure who will end up as the better player. It's really hard to predict how our squad will look after Potter starts rebuilding but he'll probably prefer to keep both of them while new starters are settling in.

It's quite possible that Havertz leaves before either of them since his contract expires in 2025, the funds from that transfer next year would help Potter to keep going with the rebuilding.

Errm. I don't think you have to look very far.  Kepa was signed on a 7 year deal.

True I totally forgot about Kepa the legend

7 years is a hell of a long contact. I don't think it's good for the player or the club.

From the players point of view, it basically traps them and gives them little control over the rest of their career. Look at Harry Kane, he wanted out, he wanted to go to City, but his really long contract forced him to stay at Tottenham. They have Haaland now and the window has closed on his chances of competing for Premier League titles at the peak of his career. If things go wrong, and that player reaches year 4 of their 7 year contract, putting in a transfer request would be pointless, especially if they're a key player. They're not getting out.

From a clubs point of view, what if the player gets a career changing injury or drops form so bad and ends up hurting the team? Kepa is a good example of this. He was so bad that we had to drop him, and if it wasn't for his contract being so long, I am sure we would have sold him. Being stuck with a player like that on our books would just hold us back.

You can understand why the large fee for Kepa & Cucurella are spread out over a long contract for amortisation purposes though considering football contracts are guaranteed, it isn’t really smart.

Mount’s situation is entirely different since he came through our youth system and there is no fee to write off, unless we are giving him a lengthy contract to offset the hit on our books from our signings.

Absolutely fantastic for England yesterday, every high press started with him and he lead the tempo throughout the game. No surprise Iran started having more chances after he went off as they were allowed to play more. Hopefully his form this season has been because he's had one eye on the world cup and this form follows him back to the bridge. Absolute top top player.
