Mason Mount

Thought Mount was decent in the forst half today though let down by others.

In the second I would have replaced him about the 70 mark.

Agreed ran himself into the ground looked shot late on. Makes me laugh when people laud saka and bellingham who were f**king awful today. Oh and grealish is all fur coat and no knickers i really dont rate the guy, and did as little as sterling but as the chelsea player of course.......sterling got sh*t.

Not only do I not rate the guy it drives me mad the ridiculous hard on Lee Dixon gets for him as soon as he gets near a pitch.

"Ah, we look different already, Grealish took out 4 players there"

No, you cretin. He completely ignored Mason Mount who was free and aimlessly dribbled with the ball until surrounded by 4 players. Said players being a little too canny for our Jack stood off so he couldn't crash to the floor once again until, inevitably he miscontrolled it and gave it away.

Stunning.

Oh and anyone who sees that Mount, Bellingham, Sterling and Saka were totally ineffectual and thinks the answer is to leave Phil Foden sat on his ar$e and bring on Jordan fking Henderson, frankly is a tw@t. Semi finals, finals whatever. Idiot.

Sign him up. He wants to stay - he should get a contract close to James. These types of players are the present and future of the playing side and cultural side of the club.

He has rejected a £200k/w offer (would have been overpaid IMO), and now demanding £300k/w+. Would you still sign him up? Personally would sell him ASAP for £60m if there are any buyers (doubt it), I still can’t see what fans are seeing.

I would still like to keep him, I think he is woefully short of form and probably needs 6-8 weeks completely out of the game. That said not to the point of ransom and everything should be weighed up against the market. If we could move Mount on and get Jaoa Felix for similar money and a better overall package I would probably do it.

EDIT: Just adding to this. Also the negative connotations of something like this should taken into account. Those fans that don't particularly rate Mount are undoubtedly in a minority. For him to reject the offer and/or leave speaks volumes against Potters plans. A Koulibaly, Kante, Auba departure can be viewed objectively.  Even a Gallagher, Jorginho, RLC departure could be justified despite age or position. But Mount is seen to be part of the longer term project and a Mount vs Trossard justification could well fall on Stony ground pretty quickly.

This highlights the utter stupidity of contract negotiations at the top end of our pay scale, which has sadly continued under Boehly.

Supposedly good businessmen seem to leave their brains at the door when they buy into football clubs ...

There is no way the likes of Sterling, Koulibaly etc are worth what they are being paid ... and all it does is make players like Mount ask for parity. Mount should be thanking his lucky stars that someone thinks he is worth paying £200K a week. He's on £85K a week as it is ... (poor little love ... how does he pay his heating bill LOL) and yet now a 235% increase (yes two hundred and f**king thirty five per cent) is "not enough" because he wants the same as Sterling. I despair at the direction being taken by this modern world ...

60 m?

Pool will take him at that price

He's not looking to leave. He's just negotiating. I'd be absolutely shocked if we don't have an agreement by the end of Jan.

JT let's not forget did the same rigmarole every few years.

Also don't give a stuff what other (thick) fans think of Mount. If anything makes me glad they hate on him. Means he's more committed to us.

Of course but an opening gambit of 300k implies he is still looking for well north of 200k. Is he really worth that when evaluating the overall budget across the entire group

Not in my book, if almost all his tangible output is against teams in the bottom six, like it was last season ...

It's the one position where we could actually gamble a bit with since we do have Gallagher, Havertz and we're signing Nkunku.

But would we lose a lot of work rate and high level press if we sell Mount, yes we would.

I agree with this but that facet of his game only works in an overall structured pattern.

We have so many players that have great aspects to their game but also have flaws in so many other areas.

Ziyech has a wand of a left foot but no work ethic, Sterling is a great back post finisher in an overload but has so many shortcomings in almost all other areas. Havertz can roam with his head up and can pick a pass with good touch, never used for that here. Jorginho great pass and move merchant, always watching what is unfolding, but struggles under pressure.

Mount actually has multiple facets but very few get seen because he spends most of his game running down 50 yard lost causes whilst everyone else stands and watches. He can pass, he can shoot, he can defend. He rarely does these well now because he has been run threadbare whilst others have a cheat up. Hence his form for over a year has been woeful and he looks like a one trick pony that's lost his trick.

If the players had a better level of fitness, if there was a sustained tactic of every player hunting the ball down when out of possession, then we could develop structured patterns of football when in possession and the individual talents all of these guys possess can come to the fore without their weaknesses being exposed.

Tuchel managed to make the squad work in a really good structured way, at least under a significant amount of time.

We were pressing high up the pitch as a team and we recovered many balls from that in the opposition half, that in turn made our defenders less pressured and it was more difficult for our opponents to create chances. Mount was instrumental in that system even if we struggled to create chances at times.

I actually saw yesterday in the match vs USA, Mount was pressing 1 player, went to the second one that passed back to the keeper and Mount was still trying to pressure, the keeper then pushed the ball forward and pass to the left-back and the whole US team managed to take the ball out of their own final third in the next 10-20 second, Mount was the only one actually trying to press during that whole sequence. Nobody offers that part that Mount offers, but we can build a different structure around a different kind of a player too.

He has been really poor in 2022, this isn't just a few weeks or few months of bad form.

We literally have a like for like replacement who costs us nothing in Connor Gallagher. So he needs to remember that when he's asking for 300k a week.

He isn't indispensable.

I would just recall Hudson Odoi and put Mount on the bench. The fact that he's still a mandatory starter is laughable.

Geniunely think he might be the most overrated player we've ever had, I can't think of anyone more overrated (maybe Havertz).

That goes to Willian. For years everybody was calling him world class, but his output was anything but that. He had an engine and was great at carrying the ball into attack, but that was it. His passing, finishing and especially his crossing was hit and miss, mostly miss.

Just leave the 200k deal on the table. Hopefully now Todd has football people around him they won't be yes men and point out how stupid we were to put Koulibaly, Sterling and even James on the huge contracts they have and that we have to stop the rot before they run the club in to the ground.

I think James justifies a huge wage to be fair
