Kante is doing well too but this whole "protecting the backline" is very much overrated I mean we saw that counter attack by Spurs it had nothing to do with our midfielders we simply have a much more stable keeper in Mendy and a world class CB that make the most difference out there. Kante making 1 clearance 1 interception and a few tackles is still not prime Kante, after all as the box-to-box he has much higher impact that led us to winning against Rennes and also he's got 1 assist while playing box-to-box, so we're still not really getting the best out of him as the DM if you ask me, Kovacic on paper could do the job and then when the time comes Gilmour/Ampadu/Rice... But if you want Kovacic to make runs with theball in the middle who's gonna cover his ass when he loses the ball ? it happens pretty often. Edited November 29, 20205 yr by DidierDrogbalala

November 29, 20205 yr The fact that half of the happy clappers on here accept continuous sh*t performances as soon as we face anyone decent is almost as embarrassing as the performance itself. We should have won this today, no doubts about it. We have grown accustomed to these type of performances and this year we finally have a team capable of competing but Frank is afraid to let them loose. Tammy was utterly dreadful today in a big game yet again. Giroud was give 10 minutes and Werner was subbed instead of the dreadful Tammy. The defence done its job today but the manager didn’t do his, unless he’s happy with a point against Spurs at home. We still haven’t won a single big game yet this season.

Also, your continuous criticism of a guy who hardly gets a chance on the pitch, yet usually scores when given the chance, is somewhat strange. Edited November 29, 20205 yr by MayosNoun!

Well he can do it he has it in him, we saw today even T.Silva running through the middle faking a pass and then passing to the other side. It's important for Kovacic just to pass the ball before he gets tackled because 8/10 times it will be a foul so he needs to pass it so that we have that advantage and also those 20% of the times when it's not a foul should be avoided if he just plays smart. But I know what you mean, it's not perfect but on paper for me it has a lot of potential to play Kovacic as the lone DM and Mount and Havertz in front.

It was also an opportunistic chance, it came out of nothing but I'm sure that if he was subbed in at minute 60' he would have more chances to score, I saw somewhere that he has scored the 2nd most goals coming from the bench in PL ever or something like that but even he deserves more than just 1 chance. Against Rennes Werner missed an even more easier chance but Giroud was there, clearly Giroud has the instinct that Lampard should use more often.

I have to admit that i always wanted to see Kovacic playing that role since he's not really a treat going foward but he's not really mobile or a great tackler. Kanté anticipate and reads the game really well but obviously doesnt have the technique ability that Kovacic has. For me we dont really have a problem getting the ball out our half so i don't see the point of making a change right now.

Are you all forgetting what it was like when Jose managed us or what? Tammy bottled his chances and shouldn't be in the starting 11, should be Werner up top. Yeah that was dreadful. That 04/05 season was so poor. Scoring 4 goals in the league on 7 occasions. Double over Liverpool, double over Man Utd. 2-0 winners away to Spurs, topping the CL group knocking out PSG. Then scoring 4 goals against both Barcelona and Bayern to put them out before being robbed by the Scouse in the semis. First title in 50 years and a CL semi final. What a boring stagnant team that was. So much better that we now have 70% possession in 0-0 draws against both Spurs and Man Utd. This without mentioning winning the League Cup against the scouse with a wonderful Gerrard own goal. Edited November 29, 20205 yr by WhiteWall

Kante's best game comes from him having a more free role in order to be all around the pitch, he naturally doesn't really want to be that much disciplined like Jorginho and Kovacic are. Him being in his natural role as the box-to-box already gave him an assist and made us win against Rennes, he's not that influential as the DM even if he can just play it simple and pass it to the full-backs. Lampard should look for Mount and Havertz to be more involved in the buildup and in off-the-ball movement, there is where Jorginho actually shines as the lone DM.
November 29, 20205 yr Tammy missed multiple chances. Giroud missed ONNCE. And the focus is on Giroud. Unreal. Edited November 29, 20205 yr by haviet1
November 29, 20205 yr Could a, would a, should a want to focus on the pluses another clean sheet, didn’t let a direct top 4 rival take points of us, Pulisick made it til FT wo pulling a hamstring and Jose has still not beaten his protege in the prem, and Leicester winning still keeps us in top 4 only 2 points of the summit. Can you really complain about all that ?
November 29, 20205 yr There is some very negative posts on here again, the top of the table team just came to us and parked the bus, that’s a huge compliment and we were clearly the better team by a country mile Son and Kane are the media’s and the statisticians golden boys at the moment, did they even touch the ball ? the result is hard to take but I draw a lot more positives than negatives from today, I think we are the best team in the league (mind you I always this that)
November 29, 20205 yr Just like the United game, neither team wanted to lose and played safe. We were the better team, but missed that cutting edge and the finish touch. Ziyech, Werner, Tammy, Giroud all missed 50-50 chances they should have done better. Giroud came on way too late, thought he should be on at HT and captitalise on those cross. It will take something special to break their central defence, cross was the best way and we didn't go for it until the second half. Defensively we were good, and thankfully Zomua didn't cost us the game with that sloppy pass, would be so harsh on him since he was good up to that point. Mount was outstanding, would have liked to see more of Havetz in the later stage of the game, but fully understand how Lampard wanted to play this game.

However, it's a bit concerning that we cannot score against any of the top teams. We have so far failed to score on 4 of such games. Granted, if we win all the games against the cannon fodder, we can get at least top 4, but to go beyond that we need to also beat some of the top teams.

Not necessarily clueless ..just not brave enough or confident enough to change things up unexpectedly during a game when clearly the opposition is just sitting deep. I think he should have made changes at half-time, Spurs were playing more or less 6 at the back at times and basically controlled the game even without the ball.

To be fair he had some decent chances you would want one of those converted at this level but at the same time he played himself into good positions to have those chances, and it’s not like he missed sitters

When you look back to the start of the season, Kepa in goal, no chilly, no Silva, Christensen and Alonso in the starting 11 and Mount playing outside on the wing, the muddled and confused Jorginho/Kovacic/kante configuration, would we have taken a 0-0 draw against the league leaders with the most potent strike force in the PL ? Think we might have ? Today’s game was all about the ‘first goal’, so whoever scored it would most probably have won the game, which is why Mourinho parked his bus and we were extremely cautious and not wanting to over commit so as not to concede what would have most likely been the only goal of the game. It wasn’t a great game , but what was special about today was how we nullified Kane, Son et al - they didn’t get a sniff and, aside from a solitary shot & Zouma’s wobble , we looked really really sound at the back. What was disappointing was the lack of penetration, especially in the first half - as someone said earlier in this thread, Hazard would have unlocked this lot, but that’s what he could do - hopefully Pulisic will do that in time. Second half was all us and the world class crosses into the box from James deserved so much more on the end of them - very disappointing, f**king awful actually - Tammy ??? I’m not sure he’s good enough at this level - Giroud, handsome as he is, is running out of legs and time. Werners finish for the disallowed goal was class , Ziyech should have done better with his chance, what a save from Lloris to turn away the shot from Mount, TA ‘missed’ 3 decent chances, and Oli got it all wrong in the last few minutes - we ought to have won and them c**ts and their flakey manager will be happy and relieved. I’m not convinced that FL sees Werner playing centrally, I think he wants a big man to play off - imagine Werner bags his goal and Tammy and Oli get 1 out of the four chances they had and we win 2-0 - got to get Roman’s cheque book out for next summer I feel. Tell you what though, James and Mount are something extra f**king special !!!
November 30, 20205 yr In the grand scheme of things, it is not a bad point. But disappointing as we had the chances to win the game. Do not miss the negative football at all, but the table doesn't lie and credit to Jose for getting the result they set out to achieve. Ultimately would like us to influence the game more in big games. We're growing into that still and will take time, but we're half a level off top caliber sides (I'm not suggesting Spurs are that; thinking Bayern, Liverpool, PSG etc). Today we were a little slow with the ball, but hard to find any space against an 8 to 10 man defense. Being critical, Tammy was poor today. He is a frustrating footballer at times - he runs ahead of the ball and looks incredibly clumsy and uncoordinated. It is hard to put my finger on, but I've always felt with Tammy he likes to look busy without really ever looking effective. Solid squad player and has improved, but imo is not starting 11 quality. Also would have liked Reece and Chilwell to overlap more and create more width on the pitch, but they were mindful of the counter. To be fair Reece did this more in the second half and provided chances that a striker at this level must finish. Keep building. Time to integrate Havertz into the side proper, and get Pulisic fit. We need to continue and slightly improve upon our form.
November 30, 20205 yr Not a terrible result and I’m not too disappointed because it was so predictable Jose would play for a 0-0. There is a bit of concern about how we go into our shell against better sides and lack at the moment the ability to win games like this with a bit of magic like we did in the past. For example, Slot costa or Drogba of old up front and we win that. I’m not just picking on Tammy cos Werner has been guilty of it too this season. Need to be more clinical. Is fair to point out Tammy's misses, however aside from the two CBs, Mendy and Kante everyone else is responsible for getting us a goal. James and Chilwell are more than capable of scoring and are two of the best in the league. Kova, Mount and Kai need to offer more offensively too. Obviously Werner, tammy and Ziyech can and should do better. Edited November 30, 20205 yr by axman2526
