Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager

Featured Replies

I'd much rather we coast out the season, finish 7th and rebuild with Potter than get tuchel back and probably also finish 7th. He wasn't right for the owners, Potter is.

Although I still think we will come good second half of season though and probably finish above Newcastle, United and Tottenham. I think we need to give Potter a couple of seasons to see it work, this is the opportunity to break the cycle of hiring and firing with no consistent approach. I don't mind being sh*t for a bit, if it means we develop an identity. The lack of one is why players like Bellingham turn their noses up at us when we should be front of their mind.

Last season up till the Lukaku fiasco and the injury crisis  we looked a world class team, every bit capable of competing with City and Liverpool.

I really didnt want Tuchel to go, but we were 7 points off city when that Lukaku news dropped.

1st 5 games we played pretty well, without it completely clicking into gear.

we then lost to city convincingly at home, stuttered to wins against soton and brentford, before going on this fabled run where Lukaku was injured and all of a sudden we were the real deal.

That run lasted 4 league games, vs Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley (0-0 at home), and Leicester, before Chilwell got injured and the form nosedive.

The only time we have looked like a world class team in the last 6 years, was the champions league knockouts under Tuchel, where we caught teams off guard with an usual mix of being able to press high, but also defender in a 5 width.

It's no surprise to me our weaker performances in that run were against Porto and Atletico away , who sat and defended really deep.

Totally takes apart this nonsense about Tuchel having us looking world class, well done.

That isn't true. I can think of 3 times he beat Pep in the league off the top of my head without thinking.

Yeah fair enough it's 3 in the league and 1 EFL.

Potter should have been given a full preseason and a couple names to work with of his choice. He's been thrown in the deep end immediately without being able to ease into the job.

To be fair, the club itself has been through the wringer the past few months, from new ownership and not knowing what was going to happen.

None of this has been ideal at all, so hopefully some calm can come in the next few months once the WC break is over and Jan window opens and closes.

@Mod We have asterisks for swearing and A**X can we also have them for project and transition surely the most overused words when discussing Chelsea for the last few years.  I swear someone will go all X Factor and say that Potter is only at the start of his journey and there's bound to be bumps in the road.😆

As much as some might want a new formation our lack of a true defensive midfielder makes it difficult so Tuchel & Potter seem to think the best fit for the players we have got at present is the wing-back system.

Now obviously with Reece, Chilwell and Forfana having major injuries it has majorly affected and impacted how our back 5 looks. Kante is obviously a big miss as well as he offers better protection and offers energy at the same time.

Our defeats have all come since Reece and Chilwell have been injured.

Is Potter the right guy to take us forward? Only time will tell, but it is clear to me that as well as the squad needing a refresh, injuries are really affecting us at the moment as it limits our options.

Take any of the top teams in the Premier League and then imagine them without their first choice left back, first choice right back, their best midfielder and a record defender signing, I’d say only Man City could carry on as if nothing has happened regarding performance and results.

In the second half of the season when players come back from injuries and after maybe making a couple of changes in the January window we will have a better idea of what direction we are moving in.

It seems a lot of people ain’t prepared to wait that long, which is their prerogative, but I can’t see any point in sacking Potter now.

Hopefully the board have the courage to see this season out and then if needed assess the situation at the end of the season.

You can’t have a long term project by only accepting quick fixes, sometimes a band-aid isn’t enough for deep wounds.

Understandably there are a lot of forum members who are still upset that Tuchel was shown the door. I never like to see our managers fired, especially those who have enjoyed some success at the club, and I would have liked to have seen Tuchel given the season at least. But the decision was made and there was obviously nothing we could do at that point. Now I want to see Potter succeed. I don't know whether he will, and I can understand concerns that he has little experience at this level. But I will be supporting him 100% while he is manager. No doubt he will be shown the door if he doesn't meet expectations.

However I am curious about what other fans think would have happened if by some chance Roman had ended up staying put as owner? Knowing his track record there is a decent chance he would have fired Tuchel in the summer after our disappointing second half of the season. The same players would have left as they had not been offered extensions under Roman, and our track record in recent seasons does not give me great confidence that we would have brought in better replacements under Marina etc. Most likely we would have brought in another high profile manager like Pocchetino and the same cyclical issues with the squad would continue. Or am I missing something?

While optimism may not be high in the short term, at least we have a chance to genuinely rebuild now.

I personally don't think Roman sacks TT in the summer. Rather he would I expect back him in the summer with new signings maybe not to the expenditure of Todd, but reasonably. I'd also like to think if this whole Russia war incident didn't happen we might have been at least able to sort Rudiger's contract out. It's rumoured we tried to but the sanctions made it impossible and at that point he chose Madrid.

When TT met Roman after the UCL win he told him it could only go downhill from here. Little did he know how right he was, I don't think it couldn't have gone worse (aside from a relegation).

Those four players Chilwell, James, Kante and Fofana, all had serious injuries last season and long periods out of the game, most of the season in some cases. We all knew they would get injured again, it was so obvious.

And yet we bought Fofana despite his injury record, overpaid on back up for Chilwell, failed to find back up for James, failed to find back up for Kante.

If Anybody Thought We'd Get Instant Success With The Amount Of sh*t We've Got In This Team Then They Were Mad, Tuchel Struggled To Get These Players Firing, We Were Playing Awful Football Under Tuchel With Players He Wanted, Now Potter Has Been Left With Players Tuchel Wanted And The sh*t That He Inherited

We Are Going To Have To Suffer This Season Until Potter Can Get Guys In That Suit His Style Of Being Interchangeable, Too Many Of Our Players Can Only Play One Way And Their Ego's Are Way Too Big For Them To Be Able To Adapt

This Rebuild Will Take A Good Season Or 2 To Get Done, Firstly We Need To Get A Spine Through The Team, There's Really Only Silva Who Is Part Of The Spine And He's Nearer Retirement Age

Yep, our lack of forward planning/thinking is really coming back to bite us.

Kouli is another injury prone player, and yet we got him as well. Kovacic is also consistently injured. All these injury prone players we have and the club seemed to have totally disregard the chances of them getting injured again. This summer has been a complete and utter shambles, the worst summer for us in the last 25 years.

When he came in he transformed us immediately into a tough team to beat, he turned Rudiger from a joke defender who panicked with the ball at his feet, in to one of the best defenders in the World. It went sour after 12 months yes, but you cannot take away the fact Tuchel had a brilliant start to his Chelsea career, the best first season of any manager since JM.

For everyone saying all our attackers are not good enough, you only have to look at Newcastle's rise. They signed 3 quality players in the spine, Bruno, Pope, Botman. Now the attackers that didnt look great like almiron are suddenly finding form.

I'd say it was a lot more down to the fact they got rid of a very very poor manager. They were already improving before those signings.

I don't agree with the last bit, 99/100 we lose out on the likes of Bellingham regardless of how good or bad we are.

For me the time I'm willing to give Potter purely depends on performances (and the assumption we don't fall to 7th or below, the squad is not that bad no matter how many times people try and say it is). If our performances are largely promising like last night I'd be happy to give him a couple of years to mould to the squad how he likes but if we get a lot of Arsenal esque performances he can piss off.

In those early matches under TT that got him off to a good start he brought back Rudiger and Alonso and had either Kovacic or Kante available.

The boys had great courage and they tried against a top team.

This guy still has the mentality of managing Brighton. We should be a f**king top team who are challenging for things, not "trying and having courage" against other top sides.

If we had a squad of winners like we used to, they wouldn't put up with this small mentality sh*t. Luckily for Potter, we've got mostly a squad of equally weak-minded players.

Yes that's the one big worry for me. I have done a lot of research on his career since his appointment and tactically speaking this really should work but it all comes down to whether he can adapt to the demands here.

No I agree entirely. But that's because we have no brand as a football club. No one wants to play for Chelsea because we are the club that is chaos. We win the champions league this season and Bellingham thinks - well they might then change their entire coaching staff and I'll be frustrated and all the assurances they gave are out the window. We have no brand.

No player we approach can be confident of their role here. The same was true for Liverpool 5 years ago. The same is true of united now. If we can get some consistency behind the scenes we can start to attract these players.

I can understand the frustration here (we're all frustrated), but it seems Potter can't really win. He either says we're at a level that we're clearly not, or he admits we're way behind City (which we have been for years) and tries to get an improvement from us. He not saying we're a small club, he's just saying we're not a top side, which has been plainly obvious all season.

There were some positive signs yesterday. We played out well from the back, tried to attack front to back very quickly, and committed lots of players forward when attacking.

The downsides are: terrible in final 3rd, shaky at the back.

I would rather we had a bad season, implementing a good style of attacking football, than doing what we did under Tuchel, which was focus on the defence, without actually sorting the attack. This worked in the cups, but in the league didn't get us much further than Lampard or Sarri.

It's possible Potter isn't the man for us, but it's clear to see that anyone who wants us to start playing good football and scoring a lot of goals is going to have a tough time implementing this. Look at Pep's first season with City, or Klopp's first couple with Liverpool

To be completely honest, if it wasn't for Arsenal doing so well, I would be as annoyed by what's going on. So as long as City win the league, all I want to see this season is some progression in how we attack. It will also tell us once and for all which players are up to it, as they are not being "held back" (supposedly) by a defensive system.

Something is wrong  just look at the facts

WE sack TT who spoke out

We employ Potter who will never say or do anything Controversial He is the YES man

We spend 200million on Rubbish ,

Koulibaly who lunges at every ball because hes to slow

Aubameyang who does not want to be here

Cucurella who is not worth  60 mill

Fofana who we paid stupid money for knowing he had a doggy kneee and  flue to America for a medical  ? really

We Sack all the medical staff

Anyone who would speak out has been shipped out

dont believe the Potter  Bighton talk they won nothing, never qualified for Europe  and took three years to finish Nineth

If we want average  we are going the right way Next we will employ Wenger  stable boring but makes money
