Dave has had a change of heart on joining Inter apparently as Atletico have come along and offered him the chance to return to Spain, which was his and his families priority.

Wonderful team player. Rarely if ever the best on pitch but one of the first names on the team sheet I’d suggest before his legs went. Really respect Dave and wish him the best. Always put a shift in.

Cesar Azpilicueta will join Atletico Madrid on a two-year deal -  free transfer.  This week.

Happy for him.

He really was a great professional player.  All those games where he played/covered at LB and then he adapted to being a CB.  He just played.  With passion and intelligence. AND he won stuff.

As a tribute, I find it hard to improve on what Jose said in an interview ahead of one of our Champion's League games:

Nothing but love and respect for the man. 11 years at the club, won everything and always gave his all. Even when his legs were gone, his heart was still there. Proper Chelsea legend. Love you Azpi.

Was massively underrated for years, an absolute gem of a signing back in the day, and extremely versatile. He was originally signed as a RWB, Ivanovic was in the form of his life but he still wasn't benched, he got played on the left instead and did a great job, his defending was on par with Ashley Cole's on that side. And under Conte he was exceptional in the defensive 3 at the back and his long balls and crosses were very underrated. 

He's obviously not been the same player for a while now, but he would always put the effort in. Best of luck Azpi! It feels as though he's the last of a generation. 

Now that's a proper exit but didn't expect less of him.

Goodbye Dave, Chelsea legend.

One does not have to be an academy product to be Chelsea. One does not even need any label. As the popular but clichéd quote goes, action speaks louder than words. In you, we have actions matched with great words. 

You're not top 10 in talent in the players we've had over the years but your dedication, consistency, and effort even when the age had started to show is commendable. The way you floundered in your first season as captain and then stepped up in subsequent seasons to own and absolutely boss wearing that armband demonstrates your commitment. 

Even when our back line seemed to all be swept away by the lure of the Spanish giants, you allowed Chelsea determine where you played your football without any fuss and even signed a contract with am optional extension. 

That is what you gave us. I remain fond of you, now and always.

What a bloke. 

Maybe never reached the heights of Terry, Lampard, Cech and co in terms of ability, but he is certainly up there in terms of importance to the era that followed our first champions league win. There's a lot of discussion going on at the moment about players understanding what it means to play for Chelsea and there is no doubt that Dave got it.
