April 4, 20188 yr Assumed the worst when it happened, but then heard nothing for days, so looked like there was hope. Sad news.
April 4, 20188 yr RIP Ray. I remember seeing him at the first match after the club sacked him, walking around smiling and chatting to the fans like nothing bad had happened. True gent from top to bottom.
April 4, 20188 yr I'm gutted, very sad news. Met him once and he was a thoroughly decent, friendly guy. RIP Ray, a true blue legend. Edited April 4, 20188 yr by paraphil
April 4, 20188 yr Pinned Devastating news :( He was there as assistant for arguably our best ever league winning season. Will be sorely missed. A great pundit too.
April 4, 20188 yr 33 minutes ago, zinc alloy said: One of our best. Top man Ray. My first Chelsea hero and the only player along with Pat Nevin that I was truly gutted to see leave us. When ever I heard him or saw him on TV you would listen, although Chelsea through and through he was very fair and not the biased stuff we get from other pundits. This really has shocked me, as although the news broke over the weekend I thought he would pull through, let them all know up there Ray, that 'blue is the colour' R.I.P Edited April 4, 20188 yr by chi blue Spelling
April 4, 20188 yr Terrible news. Chelsea to the core. Served us with total dedication and his love for the club meant he held no bitterness when he was ruthlessly and inexplicably sacked as Carlo's assistant. Truly fantastic player who had an incredible career. Just heard some tributes to him from Alvin Martin, Ally McCoist and Martin Tyler who could not speak highly enough of him as a bloke. Such a sad loss.
April 4, 20188 yr Truly gutted. Met him one time in the queue for the Shed. We had a chat and he was a genuinely nice bloke. I told him he didn't ought to be queueing with muppets like me, he was a Chelsea legend, and he told me that he didn't want any special treatment. Great bloke, desperately missed.
April 4, 20188 yr Saw him in the away end at palace this season at the outside bar, he was totally mobbed and took about 20 minutes to get through everyone, shaking hands and getting patted on the back. This morning been on phone getting Wembley tickets and sorting them out with mates, but this news just makes all that seem so irrelevant. Suddenly Sundays game against West Ham has become very significant again.
April 4, 20188 yr Extremely sad news. Chelsea to the core. RIP Ray .Great footballer and truly a nice person.
April 4, 20188 yr Absolutely floored by this news. Never a bad word said about Chelsea, he always seemed to be a very happy positive person. Chelsea was his true love. Thank you Ray for everything. Missed but never forgotten.
April 4, 20188 yr very sad news. A true gentleman. Fantastic servant to the club, and football as a whole. He will no doubt be sorely missed Thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Ray.
April 4, 20188 yr Oh this is awful news .... RIP Ray ... had him plastered all over my bedroom wall when I was a kid ... any pic any size that I could find in Shoot! magazine and the papers. Met him at the English Hickory Open last year (vintage golf tournament with antique wooden shafted clubs). Lovely bloke ... I was embarrassingly tongue-tied for a 50 year old man meeting his boyhood hero. I think a little bit of all Chelsea fans has died today ... condolences to friends and family. CFC Forever ...
April 4, 20188 yr Of all the terrible ways this season has gone, this one hurts the most. Met him twice and he was always such a nice bloke. Loved listening to him as a pundit as well. Too young to have watched him play, unfortunately. Really sad news. RIP Ray.
April 4, 20188 yr Tragic news. He married my second cousin Jackie, who was one of the club secretarial staff, and they had their reception in what is now Under the Bridge Nightclub in the East Stand. I used to have childhood fantasies about them popping round and having a kick about with Butch in the back garden. I met him a couple of times and he was very friendly and a genuinely nice bloke. A fantastic footballer and hugely respected man, whose passing will be mourned by many others in the game aside from Chelsea fans RIP Butch Wilkins
April 4, 20188 yr Awful news, thoughts are with his family. He was an absolute gentleman when I met him a couple of times when he was playing with Rangers in the late 1980s. Class midfielder.
April 4, 20188 yr Carlo Ancelotti in his autobiography couldn't speak highly enough of Ray: "Ray is one of those select few, always present, noble in spirit, a real blue-blood, Chelsea flows in his veins...without him we wouldn't have won a thing".
April 4, 20188 yr Very sad news, a Chelsea legend but first and foremost a really lovely bloke, thanks for everything Butch, Rest in peace.
April 4, 20188 yr A fitting tribute to a Chelsea legend. RIP, Ray. The real and remarkable Ray Wilkins was always a joy to watchhttps://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/apr/04/ray-wilkins-chelsea-captain-18-joy-to-watch
