That Sterling Incident

Correct. But my GF was more shocked about the abuse on this occasion mainly because of the amount of young children sitting around us, having the air turned blue around them by a bunch of hooligans, who cared not a jot. I'm guilty of it too, though I am going to be more mindful the next time I am at a game.

I probably hear and see a lot worse on the train on the way home from games.

How utterly irresponsible of DM to post a photo of his house, and listing family names etc!! Describing the area in London where he lives etc.... very easy for the pitchfork brigade to find out where he lives and smash all his windows etc.

The guy has been a grade A moron, but he hasn't been found guilty, yet at least.

Very unsettling stuff.

The first time I heard my Dad swear was at Chelsea. I thought that was part of the attraction- letting off steam, getting the weeks frustration out of your system.

I realise I’m a dinosaur, and I wouldn’t knowingly scream the C Word if there were young kids sitting close by, but come on....

Just thinking- I don’t moderate my language at games for women- call me a sexist pig but see it as a male environment that by and large they’ve joined knowing the rules

And people wonder why year on year the atmosphere at games becomes progressively more sterile.

It's relevant to the Sterling Incident. The man who has lost his job and season ticket fits into the white, middle-aged category. I just thought I'd mention it.

It isn't though, is it.

Unless you are actually suggesting that if you have a certain skin colour you are more likely to be abusive at football?

I remember my uncle took me to a Rangers game when I was about 8. I distinctly remember him saying "Now you are going to hear a lot of bad words today, if you hear someone behind you shout something, just don't look at them or pay any attention to it" and he was dead right. Some of the most intoxicated states shouting the most ridiculous things, kids shouldnt have to hear that pish.

It will always be part of the game to an extent, but it is a little puzzling why it has to be -  when the game is now so far removed from the working mans game....all seems a bit forced and silly.

There are far better ways to ease your stresses than shouting at multi millionaires who cant hear you anyway (unless you are collecting a football from row 1)

So i was at the PAOK game, a few weeks back. And after the game I was walking back to the station, and for a good 5 minutes these two youngish fans were screaming, we are rascist and we love it. And not one person batted an eyelid. Its idiots like these that really are giving our club a bad name. Granted it is very much in the minority, but if what happened to Sterling was rascist, then huge media furore or not, it needs to be dealt with in the harshest possible way. We need to look beyond the fact that its to do with Chelsea, and come together to say actually rascism has absolutely no place in our society. I was actually appalled that in 2018 with thousands of fans around me, people can get away with chanting we are rascist, and laughing about it, like its an achievment. I only wish i took a photo and sent it to the club.

Lifetime ban for "C**t"... lol. People who claim to be tolerant and celebrate such abomination  are the least tolerant of all.

He wasn't banned for saying c**t, he was banned for saying Black c**t.

When c**t is used as an insult, it means "despicable" person. The adjective you use before it explains why you think the person is despicable. So if I call someone a lazy c**t or a mean c**t, I am saying I despise that person for being lazy or mean.

Do you really think it is OK to shout out to someone that you despise him because his skin is black? Insinuating that all people with black skin should be despised??

Can you not see how wrong that is?

Did you say or do anything about it?

It is not OK, it is wrong... yet, it is not enough to get life time ban either. Simple as that. that level of sensitivity is killing the society.

Oh it is, IF he included the word black that is. If he called Sterling a "black c***" then he should be banned for life, if he called him a "manc c***" along with all of the other abuse he was giving out, then a suspension from attending football matches would be the right move. Racism crosses the line, a simple "I'm sorry" won't do.

Just to remind you both, he's been suspended pending further enquiries by the police.

What do you expect the other fans to do ? Shouting "were racist" isn't illegal.

I see worse behaviour in city/town centres every weekend, and yet people don't bat an eyelid when it goes on.

Who knows whether he's telling the truth or lying. He shouldn't be shouting such vitriol in the first place, whether racist or otherwise. The problem is, he's been found guilty without being proven innocent. Sterling comes out and claims he heard something racist, even though the statement from him was vague and seemed more focused on calling out the media in this country. The black Chelsea fan who sat a few seats away didn't hear anything. The fan has lost his job and has been suspended from the Chelsea matches without being found guilty. It all seems very harsh.

Black Chelsea fan explains why he didn't respond to racist tirade

Quote:

"Chelsea fan Nathan Lewis has explained that he was "disgusted" by the abuse hurled at Raheem Sterling at Stamford Bridge but insists he did not hear anything racist.

Lewis, who is black, was pictured a few seats away from men who were seen shouting at the Manchester City forward during Saturday's match and says he has been questioned over his inaction since the incident went viral".

What about the other thousands of people every Saturday 3PM, up and down the country who use that sort of language? Should they all be suspended?

I find it incredibly disturbing that the daily Mail has posted photos of his house, the names of his wife and children and details of his social media accounts. The investigation is ongoing, it doesnt look good at all but without proof of guilt it feels like he's the victim of a media-driven lynch mob to be honest. I nearly hope he's proven guilty so I can say the w**ker deserves it all, but if he's not then he's just had his life ruined for some sh*tty, but not damning, behaviour at a football game. Strange times these.

Didn't know he lost his job that's a bit too much considering that fans all over the world swear at players and nothing happens, but the Spurs fan that did a worse act of throwing a banana simply said "no I didn't mean it" and he's fine.

If they did that to every single fan that shouts, no country would survive I think.

What is worse a 50 year old bloke calling him a Manc c*** or a group of Chelsea fans in the MH stand singing in unison and clearly mentioning his name that he is a c*** several times?

Apologies for bringing a bit of levity intothis discussion but i have also often thought this about a number of our footballing traditions. Whilst i get the grown men chanting and singing together even though we would never do this anywhere else in our lives, it does seem slightly ridiculous when you see television footage of somebody driving into the training ground amid a small group of four old men and half a dozen kids all chanting "There's only one....". It highlights how nonsensical a number of our traditions are.

Off topic , I know...sorry

Doesn't surprise me the Daily Fail would go to such lows - they've been in the gutter for years. His wife and children had nothing to do with it. I would hope they have solid grounds for defamation or invasion of privacy.

This is another anachronism, commenting about 50 year old this and that.

when i was a kid going to football, the 50 year olds were furry faced old boys in caps, smoking St Bruno, coming out with terrace banter and quips that would be "for mens ears" yet witty. A man's club that as a young boy i felt slighty privilieged to be allowed into.

Now that i am one of those 50 year olds, there are as many 'erberts and hoolies at this age group as there are in the 20's, 30's and 40's. In fact the hoolies of my youth seem to be the hoolies of my ripening years.

Perhaps adjectives should be banned. Then there'd be no manc, no 50 year, no black, no cockney, no rent boy etc etc. We would all just be C words and everyone would be happy that none of us had been discriminated against

But there is no evidence he used the word black. There is evidence and an admission by the individual that he used the word cu**.  He didn’t say it was ok to shout at someone because they were black.
