Then late in h1 he loses the ball again  goes in too hard to get it back and gets injured. Then in h2 he does a great cross field ball only to have it sail over the touch line. In between all that he made a couple of nice passes and moved the ball around steadily. He spent a lot of time pointing to what everyone else should be doing.

he certainly talks and gestures a lot and clearly has a nice touch but showing how little I know I much prefer Kovacic and Kante.

Exactly, he basically does everything Jorginho is doing already!

If we're signing him to play mainly at CB then I'm all for it. Think he could be a top CB. As a defensive midfielder there are probably better options out there for the reported fee.

But for that money surely we could get Koulibailly or Upamecano. Much much better players for that sort of money. If we a looking to pay that sort of money for a DCM then let's go all out for Ndidi who again is way better

Koulibailly is 29, for the transfer fee and wages he'll command he's not worth it. Upamecano is current flavour of the month following his performances after the restart. He's probably going to cost about as much as Rice would anyway.

Rice offers versatility, though we apparently want him as a centre back but he also brings leadership and bigger voice on the pitch.

Can I play devils advocate here?  80 million is alot. Hes a good player ok.  How much CB has he played?  Which other teams have been after him??

I think this is a similar situation than with Chilwell. Frank wants the player as he is convinced we need his qualities. He is skilled, versatile, vocal and from young age a leader. He is also very young. He has all the attributes Frank is looking for if we are to analyse the type we have already brought in. For me anything over 45m sterling is way above his level.

I am trusting Frank with his judgement personally. I like Rice as a player and think he'll be a great addition, bringing much needed leadership and strength and into the squad. We have to remember that he'll be playing with much better players here compared to West Ham, and will develop more..

I dont see why we can't give West Ham several players as part of a swap deal?
Not saying I definitely want Rice, cause it seems like a massive outlay for someone I consider pretty average - but if we are to go for him, instead of splashing a ton of cash, we can do much better by offering them the likes of Barkley, Zouma and maybe 1 other player?

3 players + a bit of cash for Rice seems like a good deal for both sides imo, because the players we swap with them are pretty much guaranteed 1st team starters anyway

I thought this as well, although that leads me to further doubts about Barkley, because in all the years since Barkley has left Everton and the various times that he may have been speculated about moving, I have never seen him linked once to David Moyes. I have never seen Moyes even mention any interest in him at all and wasn't he Barkley's manager when he was this burgeoning talent coming off of the Everton/Rooney production line of great English young players.

The whole players playing with better players things doesn't make that much of a difference. It helps a bit, but If you're already a very good player, it will show no matter who you are playing with. For example, Barkley has been playing with better players for a while now, and he hasn't looked any better for us than he did for Everton.

Ornstein is reporting that West Ham want Emerson. That should offset a littlebit of the fee if we let him go to them.

As in the players we have brought in for this season. Barkley gets a lot of flack on here but I think he's done well.

That's just it, who says the transfer fee would be £80m?

That's exactly the fee the media were throwing around that Chilwell was going to cost us and he ended up being £45m plus £5m in add ons.

West Ham can dig their heels in all they like but they're one of the favourites for relegation this season, if they were to go down you can bet the asking price would have to massively drop massively.

I think we will get a deal done for around 50 million + some add ons. In this window.

I didn't watch their game against Newcastle but i see that several claims they didn't see the usual effort and attitude from Rice in the game and that they think he's ready to move on.

West Ham are definitly not in a position to turn down a lot of money for someone that wants to leave the club.

How many of our players would want to join a relegation dog fight? West Ham have got 6 tough fixtures on the spin, and i think they could be in serious trouble. I dont think Barkley or Zouma would go there, apparently Batshuayi turned them down already. Its a sinking ship.

Should just wait 12 months and get Rice cheaper.

Just offer 55M   if rejected  Then let him stay there. he will force a move eventually and chelsea is the club he wants. i wouldn't panic and pay above 55m for him. we don''t really  need him that bad atm anyway

What does he have to offer that we don't already have? I know he's young and tall but he doesn't make any difference for us as how he is today.

So best is to wait a season and see how he turns out, if they are going down we will get him for less cash like Big Blue said and we can still see if Ndidi from Leicester would be the best option or not, maybe Ndidi is the heir to Kante, I think he played as the CB last game as well, maybe we should look at Ndidi more closer as well.

Does it really matter to us fans how much a player costs? We are talking sums of money and dealings that most on here couldn't dream of being involved with. The board know what we can afford. The one thing we do know is that Marina and her negotiating team are very proficient at getting us the best deal available and if the price is considered too much we just won't sign him.

Haha yes. People talk as if they understand everything about the finances at the club.

Yeah I don't give a stuff how much a player costs. Often I'd say "well why are we spending 100m on x when we could spend 100m on a b and c. But In this particular instance it really doesn't matter if Marina choose to buy him for 80m or for 50m because we either are going to sign Rice or we are not.

I think Rice being Chels is a big part in why we want him. He loves Chelsea and will give his all every game.

Having grown up with Chelsea, perhaps Lampard sees Rice having a similar role to what Terry had here - Being proper Chels, reminding everybody what it means to play for Chelsea.

I think if he turns out to be a really good player, there’s a chance he could be our long term captain. If he’s good enough.
