Seen £17m quoted as a potential fee so looking at a £5m loss within a year.... And this is the problem when leaving it to the last day to sign people. Got fortunate a couple of years ago with Alonso, a few eyebrows were raised about paying £23m for the former Bolton and Sunderland player but didn't repeat the trick with Zappacosta, signed a mediocre player from a mediocre side. Be interesting to see how wiling the club are to trade on this with a possible loss of £5m when we are faffing around over manager compensation haggling.

Mad as is may seem when you factor in the the changes in the Euro/ sterling exchange rate and indeed the fact that he signed a 4 year deal and if the fee was indeed £22 million then in accounting terms if he is sold for £17 million then maybe it’s not great business but perhaps it’s not quite as bad as is being suggested On 31/8/17 the exchange rate on that day ws £1= €1.0837 so the cost of £22 million was €23.8million. All football contracts end on 30th June so Zappacostas contract if it were to run its full course would end on 30June 2021 some 46 months in total meaning the fee is written of (amortised) at the rate of £ 15737 a day. On the 23 June 2018 some £4.658 million has been written off so his book value is currently £17.342 million and at months end that will be down to £17.231 million On 31/8/17 £22 million was worth € 23.8 million .On 22/6/18 £1 = €1.14 so £17 million is worth €19.38 million Ok we aren’t going to get back everything we paid for him but I personally didn’t think it’s disastrous.
June 23, 20188 yr Don't be silly. Italian clubs don't buy players from us outright. It will be a loan to buy thing with a 2 years loan and a mandated purchase after that. Probably 2mill a year loan fee then purchase of 13mill.

The Blues have been very inactive in the transfer window so far due to the uncertainty surrounding the club's leadership, but with Sarri set to replace Antonio Conte they can finally crack on with a squad overhaul.
July 15, 20188 yr Well, he was the only one sub last year with an actual impact on the team so I cannot say I'm happy, given also the fact that our starter is Victor Moses. We should have started the big bazaar with Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Barkley, Morata or Pedro, but whatever.
July 15, 20188 yr If we get a better replacement I won't be too bothered. I do actually think Zappacosta was a good squad player so I wouldn't really mind if he stays either. But if he does go and we don't get any replacement I'll not be happy about it.
July 15, 20188 yr If we go to a back 4, do we think Zappa is better suited, or Moses? Have to imagine Azpi moves to our starting RB in a 4.
July 15, 20188 yr I actually think Moses is the better defender of the two oddly. Plus he’s homegrown status I think
July 15, 20188 yr Not too bothered if he goes, but I suppose an Italian manger should know him pretty well and may just give him another go. Supposedly we sell him on the cheap, then what? Do we have the resources to buy a 40-50M right back, or another 20-25M Italian player who's just another name of Zapacosta. If we aren't going to spend big for improvement, why bother change for the sake of it.

July 15, 20188 yr Have to wonder, given how little time Sarri has to work with the players before the transfer window closes... having managed in Italy you have to suspect that Sarri should already be quite familiar with Zappacosta. That might count in his favour.
July 15, 20188 yr Shame about Zappers, I quite liked the fella. He was pretty much always steady without being spectacular.

You would think Zappacosta is a player Sarri is familiar with and already has an opinion on his ability. I would imagine he’s someone he’s already made his mind up about whether he wants him there or wants an upgrade.
July 16, 20188 yr Moses can be the backup to Dave at RB, move Zappa back to Italy.Aina is also an option

We can’t have a squad full of world class players, you need a few average squad players who aren’t expecting to play week in week out. Ferriera was steady. You knew if he played he’d generally have a good game, I never panicked when he was on the pitch.

I'm not wanting a squad of world class players but Zappacosta is not Chelsea standard. Ex-winger Moses is a better RB than him, says everything you need to know about him.

Neither Zappa or Moses are going to start anyway, Dave will, so for back up either one is more than adequate. I know Dave has been playing CB (and has played at LB before) but he's very much a RB and is one of the best in the world. We don't need an upgrade to either Dave or our backup(s). Same with our left side as well with Alonso and Emerson. Not sure why people are so focused on our full backs at the moment when we have a lot more things to worry about.
July 17, 20188 yr We shouldn't be spending £20m on average squad players though. We have Moses and Azpi, sell Zappa and recoup as much as we can to reinvest elsewhere. No one wants a world class bench, we just don't want an expensive sh*t bench.
July 17, 20188 yr Woop, I’ve wanted him sold ever since his 2nd or 3rd game for us. Nothing special and bang average.
