January 27, 20197 yr When we signed him, I always said it was a risk, and in the first few months it looked like it was going to be a risk worth taking, but things quickly went wrong and he never recovered. I always thought that there must be something wrong with him if he couldn't become a regular at Juve or Real Madrid, and now we know what it was that was wrong with him. He's just not mentally strong enough to be a top striker.
January 28, 20197 yr Good riddance. Definitely one of the absolute worst signings since Abramovich took over the club. Morata Miss Compilation (all sitters missed 17/18) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPLrgXNFuJA&t Edited January 28, 20197 yr by Aryagorn
January 28, 20197 yr I think he gave his all but when a broken boy does it it looks that way. Wasn't much. He gave his all? Like seriously!
January 28, 20197 yr That 2017 transfer window was probably the worst of the Roman era. £150m spent on Morata, Bakayoko, Drinkwater and Zappacosta and none of them are in the team 18 months later.

Higuain turns out to be a big hit, but at end of 18 months loan (Assuming we extend his loan) his age has gone against him. Meanwhile Morata has found his swagger at A.Madrid, becomes one of the worlds best strikers. we say goodbye to Higuain and give Morata one more final chance, as a new man. You never know.

At least Rudiger has been a good signing, so it wasn't a complete waste. Still a really bad window though.

Rudi was a great signing but one out of five as a success is terrible. We’ve made almost no money back on the players we don’t want either. Drinkwater is exiled picking up £100k a week for doing nothing. Bakayoko is on loan with an option to buy that Milan might not even be able to afford. Morata (a £60m investment) is on loan for 18 months with an option to buy but when the loan expires he’ll be at an age where his value will start to dip because technically he should already be at his peak. He was such a bad signing we’ve been forced to bring in a 31 year old with no Premier League experience to replace our record signing centre forward! Zappacosta is rumoured to be leaving on loan too this month but if not he’ll continue to be a £20m squad player that couldn’t even get a game against Sheffield Wednesday. I mean, no wonder we let Emanalo go to Monaco after that horror show of a window. Our transfers have been largely better with no director of football.

January 28, 20197 yr i remember him starting very well and looking really promising, he then started falling over all the time and looking forlorn. maybe he got dumped
January 28, 20197 yr Good luck to him. Hopefully he does well in Madrid and settles and gets to where his ability is.

Don't think Morata is mentally tough enough to be one of the worlds best strikers, let alone succeed in England. Maybe Spain will suit him well.
January 28, 20197 yr Atletico is a good place for him. I don't think he will brake the 20 goal barrier there but will contribute to their aims. As a squad and a club they are a much safer environment opposed to Chelsea. The demand level there is high but not the level we demand. They also have a long term manager.
January 28, 20197 yr Funny how none of the 3 strikers we were linked to at the time Morata, Lukaku or Belotti had a great 20 months.. I wouldn’t want any currently..

On the flip side that also demonstrates a trait to rectify mistakes, all going well we will recoup our money on all of those bar Drinkwater. When you consider how long Fellaini and Lovren have survived at United and Liverpool respectively it put that into a bit of perspective.

We’re probably, almost certainly, going to make a loss on all of them. Bakayoko bought at 22 should have only increased in value but he’s got an option to join Milan for a £6m loss. Morata’s option to buy fee is a £10m loss. Rumoured fee for Zappacosta from Lazio is £15m, a £7m loss. According to journos no one has shown an interest in Drinkwater this month. A £35m signing earning £100k a week (over £5m a year). Throw on top the agent fees (we were one of the highest spenders in agent fees last year) and wages and it’s a dismal return on a massive investment. Of even half of that money had been better invested our squad could look so much stronger right now.

I know this is a massive if at the minute, but should Atletico and Milan activate the option to buy clause they have on Morata and Bakayoko respectively we would have got the bulk of our money back for both (including the loan fee). All things considered I'd say that was a pretty good recovery. Zappa similar story, minimul loss at worst. Drinkwater does look like the one we are stuck with though, the ironic thing is he would have in my opinion done reasonably well had he got given the same chances by Conte the three above had.
