We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

Kepa is not as good as the price paid for him would mean, nor as bad as everyone now says, becoming the perfect Christ to hide the blunders of the demigod Frankie Lampard.

Being the goalkeeper, of a team trained by an amateur coach who does not know how to put the team to defend and who has spent the season changing players and tactics in the wind, it shouldn't be easy.

Put a real coach on the team who knows how to organize the defense and Kepa will no longer look so bad.
Because this exercise of trying to crucify each defense and the goalkeeper when it is known that the person responsible is the coach who has become a taboo, who cannot be held responsible.

As if he were there doing charity work.

It is for these things that "legends" are not placed in positions as coach ...

To get him out of there we will have to fall very low ...

And we can predict how low we can get.

His weight is all leaning to his left, basically the equivalent of being wrong footed had he been standing. There’s no leverage for him to “be stronger” in pushing it away. He did all he could to keep it out of the net and he did it well.

Crazy the lengths people will go to place any sort of blame on Kepa. Yes he needs to be better but just because he’s had some struggles, doesn’t mean that every single thing that doesn’t go our way is his fault or that he must do better. He stopped the shot with good reflexes, that’s it.

Agreed. Kepa can't be blamed for that goal. He can for many, many others, but not that one. Mainly I blame Mount for that one for thinking he could risk runnning it out from the edge of our area.

As for a new keeper, I doubt we will get one because of the investment in Kepa and his age, but if we did I would love us to get Henderson. He won't be guaranteed number 1 status at united with DDG there, and I've heard plenty that suggests if he isn't number 1 there, he wants to go elsewhere and be number 1. He would be a fantastic investment for us.

What were his stats last season? I know a lot is made of his poor save/clean-sheet record this season, what was he like last year behind a slightly better-performing defence?

Pretty damning stuff (from Jonathan Wilson's article a couple of days ago):

Some sympathy is certainly due to Lampard in that he has inherited in Kepa Arrizabalaga a goalkeeper who, like Claudio Bravo, seemed to dematerialise on arrival in England. The confident and aggressive figure of Bilbao has become weirdly cowed and occasionally petulant. Since Opta began collecting the data in 2003, no side has conceded a higher percentage of shots on target, the 44.5% Arrizabalaga is letting in far exceeding the 42.9% achieved by Artur Boruc (with some help from Adam Federici) at Bournemouth in 2015-16.

Got to say Lampard made a brilliant decision in starting Willy over Kepa today - Willy was confident in sweeping up fast long balls, I imagine Kepa would have hesitated.

This!

Him and Christensen both look so scared and hesitant at every single set piece, and I think it's affecting the confidence of our whole backline.

Kepa has apparently deleted Chelsea FC from his twitter bio.

Now this doesn't have to mean anything, but we'll see what happens...

Some basic internet sleuthing shows that he never had Chelsea in his twitter bio. Neither does Willy.

Well I said 'apparently' because I read that somewhere on social media...doesn't have to be true, just saying that it could be an interesting sign if true.

edit: Turns out to be fake news, sorry about that.

Not your fault, lots of people get duped by this as its hard to check. It's not the first time twitter has gone into a meltdown for a lie exactly like this 😀

I've tried to be patient and this may be an overeaction to the game now but I've lost my rag with him now. His defence is sh*t but how many goals that he's conceded has he been flat-footed for?

Really wish him the best but it won't happen here for him.

Get big Pete a contract for a season☹️

Just sell him and hope there's a club somewhere that didn't watch this season's games.

I am so tired of seeing him taking a half step and planting his feet for every distance shot. You even get the impression he's telling himself "well, I shouldn't be expected to get to that..."

Literally useless. He simply doesn’t even try, accepts every single ball that isn’t directly at him is a goal. I seriously cannot believe we paid £70m+ for a keeper, let alone this one. Shambles

I believe that his confidence is on the ground now, he is all lost around.

Not sure he is the type of GK that can bring us to the top. I think if there is a club that wants to give him a chance, we must sell him.

Good riddance.

I'd be shocked if we see him in a Chelsea-shirt again. Surely Lampard and Petr have had enough now.
