Mason Mount

I keep saying this, it's not Mount. It's the awful football we are playing.

Common this is just making excuses for him. Potter even tried helping him when he saw he wasn’t taking on the fullback by moving him to a false 9 position.

Guy has won player of the year twice, you don't just become a hack over night. At this rate, the idiots on social media will drive him off to Liverpool or Bayern who will press and use him properly.

I'll happily defend him. With Reece he is our best home grown prospect since JT. We should be anchoring the team around those two. That is before we consider being at the heart of a CL winning team.

The hate he gets is unbelievable.. GP doesn’t know what to do with him just like he didn’t know how to use most of his squad.. HE IS NOT A FORWARD.

TT always had him in a barrow formation to put him out wide and expect to dribble past players and put a cross in is madness..

What is Mount’s position? Because I doubt anyone would say it’s a winger. There’s a mass of them on the books, yet he’s played put there - why? Then, in other games, he’s played at eight, false nine or ten - sometimes all three.

He’s 24, still very young for a footballer at this level, and I think his flexibility is working against him. Pick a position for him to hone and let him get on with it. Get back to basics.

Saying that I do feel he is struggling emotionally, and I believe it’s because he has doubts about whether the club he loves values him. Indeed, I think the doubt may have started in Lampard’s time, when Havertz joined for a huge fee. Suddenly, someone comes in who plays in a similar position, I’m assuming on more money, despite him having a brilliant season. And it did change the balance of the team - starting for tactical reasons, I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Mount since. To tie it up the above, maybe there’s a nagging question mark why he tends to get moved around for others, rather than being used as the lynchpin of the team.

Then we have the contract situation, which is the club’s chance to show how much is valued. Yet they’re refusing to do so. So now he’s low on confidence and possibly low on support, generally being played out of position in an out of form side.

As painful as it is to say, a move may do him a lot of good in the long term.

where would you play him in a back 4 then because it seems he is better off in back 3  as a narrow forward where he isn’t expected to contribute creatively, just get on the end of balls into the box.

How do you anchor a team around a player that can’t do the basics? We can all agree Potter is the wrong manager but his poor form started way before Potter. In the  first 6 PL games this season all under Tuchel, he recorded 0 goals, 0 assists, and 4 successful take-ons.

It isn’t a Chelsea problem alone, looked decent for England when they were playing a back 3. Once Southgate switched to a back 4 at the WC he looked lost.

No one knows which is wild considering he has been around for a while. I always felt playing him in different positions early in his career was going to hamper him in the long run. Sure he was racking up appearances but what you are left with is a jack of all trades but no one can tell what his position is. Rashford had the same problem at 18/19 but he put his foot down and told his manager he didn’t see himself as a CF, and preferred playing as a winger.

Safe to say we can all agree he isn’t a 10, he isn’t an 8, and he isn’t a winger. The solution might be switching to a 4-3-3, and playing him next to Enzo in a box-to-box role with a DM behind. But you then have the Nkunku problem in the summer who prefers playing behind a 9

If he had been playing at a good level this season, we might not have had to bring Felix in.

Anyone could be out of form and miss chances, but he's not even running or pressing anymore. Once the effort has gone, there's no way back. There's definitely something more behind the scene, would not be surprised if puts in a transfer request at the end of the season.

The entire team should put in a transfer request unless Potter isn't fired within the next days. It's f**king pathetic how this guy ruins all our potentially amazing signings. Imagine being Mudryk, Enzo, Madueke and arriving into this hellscape of a team. Months after Potter has arrived I still have no idea what he is trying to accomplish. We have to get in a new manager for the remainder of the season. If not the damage might turn out to be catastrophic and cripple us for seasons to come.

What is the point of critisizing Mount? Has he been crap yesterday? Yes. But so has the rest of the team. We don't have a functioning system, players don't know what they are supposed to do. Mount is getting moved around every game. Fale 9, 8, winger, next he is probably going to start in defence ... It's just not a way to get the best out of players. Mount is probably just feeling lost having to duel with Potter. He isn't the player he used to be, both in terms of effort and pressing as well as assisting and scoring.

Get in a new manager and if we finally manage to play decently again we can critisize Mount if he is worse than our other attacks/midfielders. For now any criticism of individual players is totally pointless.

I'm afraid it's his poor decision making that gets on my wick...

Like yesterday when he should have played Fofana in for a run at goal he tries to do it himself... gives away posession - does it more or less every game now - when he should shoot he doesn't he tries to set up someone else... just goes on and on - needs a rest but doesn't get benched - suspect that pisses off the other players because they know he's out of form...

Potter should have kept Fofana on yesterday but instead he took him off and moved Mount to the "No9" ... Yup - not Mount's fault - but why does he seem to get so many starts etc when he's obviously not on form?

I think it’s simply down to a case of Mason crumbles when the team have gone to sh*t! Some players can handle it and still be consistent (Tiago, Kante and Kovacic to an extent) but some just cave in! Havertz can also be accused of it too, along with others!

Get a decent manager in, get some good results and confidence, and he’ll be back firing again for sure!

Fair to say really, who is playing well now? Nobody.

Even Felix and Mudryk who were showing great signs to start with are falling off rapidly.

The players need to share responsibility for not even being able to do some of the basics (e.g finishing a simple chance), but when every player is playing like sh*t, it's beyond a coincidence. It's only Thiago Silva who you know will always put in a top performance, besides that, I've seen no improvements from anyone in the team.

Hopefully he turns it around but there is a worry that he’s becoming the next Dele Alli. So promising/good for a couple years and then the career goes off the rails.

Well said.. a bad manager shouldn’t mean you can’t do the basics. Seems like his head his gone, and for all Potter’s criticism (all fair) he shifted him away from the LW in the first half when he saw he was struggling. Most managers would have hooked him at half time.
The Dele comparison is apt because just like the former unless he is contributing in goals and assists you struggle to see what he does. Before anyone comes for the comparison, Dele has 3 seasons of contributing 15+ G/A in the PL. Only problem is he bizarrely peaked at 23. Still early days but whatever happens wouldn’t sell Mount this summer. Fingers crossed we bin Potter in the summer; so he either earns his new contract, or if the poor form continues he leaves on a free. I reckon a new manager will get a tune out of him by switching to a 4-3-3 and playing him next to Enzo with a DM behind.
