Pace and acceleration that Ben Chilwell is nowhere close to having, or any of our other failed L/R backs. He is much better on the ball as well. The slight strength advantage Chilwell might have, Reguilon makes up in intensity and aggresion. I haven't been impressed by Chilwell in the premier league, after the break he has been very poor for Leicester. Reguilon, in the 5 games I've watched him have been great against tough oposition in EL. In addition to those points which I agree with Chilwell is injured now and was out for part of last season. For all I know maybe that’s why Leicester are selling. Against that Chilwell will settle straight in, no language or culture issues.
August 22, 20205 yr Really happy if its for £45-50m as is now being touted. Same as what City paid for a 26 year old prime Kyle Walker 3 years ago. She's received a lot of stick from certain posters over the years but i think we all need to commend Marina for the work she's done for this club, can't think of another club with a better negotiator.
August 22, 20205 yr 50m deal agreed. Not overly keen but he will have my full backing as will any signing.

Leicester wanted 80 million to begin with, we got it down to almost half! Still 20 mill over what he's worth. Reguilon and Tagliafico are much better options, this is a disappointing transfer for me

Tagliafico is much older and never played in a top league. Stupid to say they're MUCH better options.
August 22, 20205 yr If tagliafico is that good why is no one else after him ? He is not a spring chicken .. Utd, City, Spurs all are in the market for a LB yet no links .. we have tried this approach of getting in players from the other leagues at fb and from bosingwa, belleti, Zhirkov, Luiz, Emerson they have all struggled to look EPL quality.. forget too 4. I am 100% behind this approach by the club to buy epl proven.. this is the model pool and city and Utd of old followed.. we always wanted to look for the cheaper continental option.. to remind ppl some felt VVD was overpriced.. Mane was not top 4 quality ... Another example is The Leipzig CB who everyone is raving about and I have watched post lockdown .. he has at least 1-2 mistakes per match in him .. hardly better than AC or FT.. I just feel we see some of these players in the most important matches of their careers and they need just one performance to convince the casual observer.. having said that The scouting team would be looking at them across a much larger sample set and also look at other attributes around personality type etc.. I will always back the club when they buy from the epl.. the pros outweigh the cons completely.

August 22, 20205 yr I’m far more positive about this deal at £50m than I would’ve been at £80m. Granted £50m is still expensive for a 23 year old who right now doesn’t fall in the ‘world class’ bracket but we know about the Premier League tax and that there’s a premium price on proven English talent. He’s supposedly been Frank’s number one target at left back, is an England international and up until the transfer speculation surrounding him earlier in the season was playing very well for Leicester. My only concern is that he won’t get a full pre season training/playing with the team because of his current injury - hopefully he can recover from that quicker than expected. I’m not overly confident about this one either, but he’s young, promising, and Frank appears to really want him. I think he’s better than Alonso and Emerson, and the price doesn’t seem to be stopping us from making other signings like Havertz, so I’ll find me talking myself into liking this one at some point I’m sure.

Bosingwa was actually pretty good in his first season (2008/09) but after his injury in early 2009/10 he was a far diminished shadow of the FB we saw before. Belletti was just a utility player who'd fill in from time to time, with the odd long-range strike (notably against Spuds). He was about as useful as he could been given his advancing age and unstable gametime. Zhirkov couldn't get past Malouda (in-then career best form) and so Zhirkov often had to moonlight as a left-back. That game against Bolton (2009/10), where he ran Bolton's right-back ragged and curved in a cross for Anelka to finish, showed what he could have done under more felicitous circumstances. David Luiz's time here has been marred by inconsistency, but you can't call him a failure given his efforts in securing countless trophies. He was outstanding in 2016/17. The point, though, is that for all of the bolded there were extenuating circumstances, such as the trophies this lot gave us, that make us forgive their flaws and inconsistencies. RE your point, I agree that it is a bit of a crapshoot to go for players in foreign leagues. Not just due to language issues, but also because each league has it's own general style. I could expound my thoughts on this if asked. However, as we've seen with the likes of Sidwell, Drinkwater and Barkley, Home-grown PL experience is not a guarantee of anything. The player could fly off the rails due to personal issues ala Drinkwater, fail to fit into the club culture (yes, each club's culture is different - a young man from Swansea may find Fulham overwhelming - plus clique culture is a real thing among Anglos), get injured, or just plain disappoint. Of course, there were mitigating factors for the three listed. The point is that both English and non-English players are subject to a variety of factors that could derail any such transfer. RE Chilwell: 50 million pounds? Well, at least it could have been 80! Seriously though, Leicester fans have said that he started well and then trailed off badly after October/November. Chilwell is apparently a reasonably fit player, so this suggests that we may have to rotate him with Alonso/Azpi when required (typically in games against lesser opposition and/or in cup games). No doubt Leicester didn't really have that luxury. Oh, and see if Chilwell can improve here in that respect. Hopefully we won't injure him in the process, though. 😔 Chilwell's defensive positioning isn't all that and I hope Frank recognises the need to get a defensive coach in to deal with our defenders. He is a bit more dangerous going forward than Emerson, particularly with those crosses. EDIT: Leicester's players couldn't take advantage of them, but I can imagine Giroud heading Chilwell's crosses to devastating effect, either into the goal or having an onrushing Werner commit the coup de gras after he holds the ball up. Even Tammy/Werner could take advantage sometimes! He does look rather lightweight and that should be dealt with. Unfortunately, we can't call him a more mobile Alonso because he doesn't have Alonso's lungs or goal threat (though he did score 3 last season - something to work on?). In sum, like all incoming Chelsea transfers, I wish Chilwell the best at this great club! I do have reservations over his transfer in terms of whether his performance justified the expenditure and the implications of him backfiring badly with Chelsea ala Drinkwater. I will say I had reservations over Pulisic's transfer and he proved me wrong. Let's hope Chilwell does the same. His upside is enough for me to hope that he can. The worst-case scenario is that we've wound up with an Emerson/Alonso hybrid anyway. Edited August 22, 20205 yr by DaRick Divided into sections

Bosingwa - With bosingwa it was never his pace that was in doubt which would have gotten hampered.. he was ok in the first season i dont remember him being talked about as the league's better RB.. in a season where we finished 3rd ... i think after the season people targeted him and his suspect positioning and lack of bite in tackle generally meant he got over-took by a certain Ivanovic who wasnt even a natural RB to start with.. Belleti - he came in to play in the first team when we couldnt sign Alves.. the fact that he started 20 matches in the league tells me he was no utility player.. i give you Zhirkov.. he wasnt meant to be LB .. but then i also forgot to dd Zappa as another continental FB who was just not good enough for us.. infact Baba rahman too.. And i was talking about Felipe Luiz not David Luiz.. if you remember he was also with us for a season coming from a champion Athletic side but couldnt dislodge Azpi.. apart from Belleti none of these were cheap but largely duds. See - similar excuses could be made for domestic players aswell.. Conte and Sarri never fancied DD or played him .. Ross has been a good contributor this season for us.. has chipped in with good goals.. his CFC career is not yet finished he has proved absolute value for the 15 Mil spent.. Steve sidwell was a free transfer again low risk..and for every steve sidwell you have a Baka who is a much more costly acquisition. Point is your odds of success are higher when buying from the EPl atleast in my view..
August 22, 20205 yr Not happy with this signing, I don't rate him in the slightest, always puts in a w**k performance whenever I've watched Leicester, 50 million for him? We'll regret this one...
August 22, 20205 yr I think Chilwell will strengthen us marginally now let's see who else we bring in.

August 22, 20205 yr Everyone wanted us to sign Luke Shaw and he turned out to be very average when moving to United. Sometimes players find the right club and flourish. If we want Frank to be here we need to give him the players he wants and Chilwell is obviously top of his list. Get behind him

Ivanovic overtook him after he got injured and after it became clear that this Bosingwa was a shadow of the one we saw in 2008/09. Nobody has criticised his initial performances for the club in any depth, and I don't remember him being good enough to hold his own on account of his pace and ability to intercept the ball (both had mostly gone by the time he left). Beletti started off alternating with Paulo Ferreira and Essien for right-back, then became a utility player. Obviously my brain cells are decaying. IMO Filipe Luis acquitted himself well during his season here, at least when he played. He did look a bit lightweight at times, but given his performances I thought he was hard done by. Still got a PL and League Cup winners medals! And we sold him back for a reasonable amount anyway. I addressed the fourth bolded part above. At face value, I tend to agree because the language barrier would at least ostensibly reduce communication issues. However, context matters. Basically, whether or not a transfer is 'good' depends on: 1) the player's cost, 2) the type of player you want, 3) at what time, and 4) in what position. Also, playing for Sunderland (as Marcos Alonso did prior to joining Fiorentina) doesn't guarantee that you'll be a key player in a 2016/17 PL win. Edited August 22, 20205 yr by DaRick

August 22, 20205 yr Seems like it's a done deal, Lampard wants him, Ashley Cole rates him and currently the best Left Back in the league in Robertson has claimed him to be top 3 LB's he enjoys watching. Can't be all that bad.
August 22, 20205 yr Regardless of whether we wanted the club to sign him or not, he's on the verge of becoming a Chelsea player. Let's get behind him and hope he proves to be worth it.
August 22, 20205 yr Cole really rated him as a player and that gave me confidence. Who can be better to judge left back other than Ashley cole?
August 22, 20205 yr Glad we signed a real English talent, but I do agree with some of the other sentiments above regarding price. If the final figure turns out to be £50m then I think it is around £20m too much. Granted, I know there is an added cost for any player in the PL + English, but I would also have preferred Reguilon. Hopefully Chilwell does well and proves me wrong.
