I wonder if Alonso will be content to play backup or if he'll start angling to leave because if he stays we'd at least have decent depth in the fullback positions. I think Lampard may want to keep Alonso around especially as it seems like his fall back formation is 3-4-3 & Alonso (in my opinion) is the best Wingback in the league However reports are suggesting that we are still interested in bringing in Reguilon alongside Chilwell which may suggest both Emerson and Alonso are on there way out.

It's a good question. At the moment, the most successful teams in world football have attacking fullbacks. The reason for this is two-fold; the fullback is best placed on the field to 'overlap' outside a tight, compact defense and run behind the defensive line to cross the ball in. The only real way to deal with this is to have your own fullback defending the threat, meaning that your fullback then cannot support the attack. Over the course of the game this allows stronger teams to maintain control of the game. For a bigger, more attacking team like Chelsea, we will spend more time in possession of the ball and therefore attacking, and we require the fullback to be able to use and maintain the possession effectively. Our fullback will primarily be an attacking player who is occasionally required to defend. A defensive fullback is often a great option when playing against other big teams, but against smaller teams who defend compactly it can be a liability. Crosses from in front of the defensive line are much less effective goal-scoring changes than crosses from behind the defensive line, and if you have a fullback who is not quick or technical enough to run past a defense, the fullback will be tempted to cross the ball in from deep, breaking down the attack. Importantly, a savvy team will actually game this sequence of events to force the attacking team to turn over possession, and immediately counter-attack. The other thing to remember is that there's no hard line between 'offensive' and 'defensive' fullbacks, and there are certain attributes - pace, quickness and game sense - that transfer between the two. Given this, many coaches feel it is easier to teach an attacking player with the above attributes to be a good defender, than it is to teach a good defender to attack well. In fact, most fullbacks start their career as midfielders!
August 21, 20205 yr Chilwell rumours are heating up. Supposedly 60m reported to being nearly done. Whats everyones thoughts on this? If true, 60m euro's i think is a reasonable valuation, any higher no thanks!! Wonder if the Regullion rumours were just a decoy to make Leicester sh*t themselves and think they won't make the sale unless they give us a reasonable price. Either way 60m euro is a far cry from the £80m originally quoted.

August 21, 20205 yr Deal between 45-50 million Ornstein writes. For that price i will gladly have him! I am very impressed by Marina and the club in the market this year. Leicester wanted 80 million to begin with, we got it down to almost half!
August 21, 20205 yr It wouldn’t surprise me if we leaked the £80m fee originally just so we can look good when we get him for £50m. Unlike most I’m quite happy with this transfer, Franks got his man and he has loads of room to improve.
August 21, 20205 yr Wan Bissaka cost United £50m. Chilwell is much further along as a player and will cost us a similar price. Lampard getting the player he wants no more 2nd, 3rd choice style signings like Zappacosta and Emerson.
August 21, 20205 yr I'm on the fence with him. Prefer Reguilon, but if we have the money I can see the Chilwell logic.
August 21, 20205 yr Delighted. Only 23. Racked up a lot of experience already and despite dips in form, has shown tremendous potential too and think he will shut a lot of people up.
August 21, 20205 yr Without doubt an upgrade over what we've got atm. With a bit of guidance from Ashley could be our regular LB for the foreseeable future.
August 21, 20205 yr I’m almost on the fence, edging towards being happy about us signing Chilwell. I do think he is better than what a lot of people are saying but the doubts are still there. It also makes me think Chilwell is abit underrated, everybody wants Reguillon but is he really any better? I mean, Chilwell has proven himself in the league, who knows how Reguillon would have done. I was excited about Emerson as he was a really high rated young player, look at how that turned out.
August 21, 20205 yr Good bit of business, imo. Hes out injured for another 3 weeks (if you read Ornstein's tweet) so not a full pre-season to get into the groove, but he knows the league, is proven and once he's fit we should see a lot of him. Bye Bye Emerson - hope Inter still want him after today's disappointment.

I want Reguilon because he has the attributes of a worldclass left back. Pace and acceleration that Ben Chilwell is nowhere close to having, or any of our other failed L/R backs. He is much better on the ball as well. The slight strength advantage Chilwell might have, Reguilon makes up in intensity and aggresion. I haven't been impressed by Chilwell in the premier league, after the break he has been very poor for Leicester. Reguilon, in the 5 games I've watched him have been great against tough oposition in EL.
