Welcome To Chelsea Thiago Silva *Official*

Considering it looks like we're priced out of moves for Rice and Dunk getting Silva on a freebie is about as good a signing as you could ask for.

There's not a whole lot of quality centre backs around right now, not unless you're paying silly money.

Looks like Chilwell is the big defensive investment this year and maybe we'll be back in for Rice next year?

We’re told Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Thiago Silva on a free transfer. Contract length among the issues still to iron out. More info on @TheAthleticUK’s transfer tracker here 👇 #CFC

Sounds like we’re in talks and exploring.

LOL  hes 36, past his prime being shown the door by PSG (now a proper team) and some of you lot think he'd be a good signing, yet Willy a proven player in this division wanted 3 years at 31 and most of you were glad to see the door close behind him - "hes 32 soon, will lose his pace, be on the bench on high wages etc."  And don't try and say he doesn't need the pace, his football brain will compensate for no legs - ballox, we need younger better centre back(s) than this old fella  IMO

I’m sure as a short term option, until we find a long term solution, he will be fine. It’s better than splashing out on a average player. I would rather wait for the right one.

But Willian and Thiago Silva are completely different players, playing completely different positions with completely different circumstances.

We offered Willian a 2 year contract, this isn't normal btw. This was only ever done for Luiz before hand. Typically we only offer one year contracts past 30. Willian rejected us, we didn't reject him. He had an offer from Arsenal for 3 years plus a lot more money and that's completely fine. I personally think we may target another winger possibly in Janurary but if not, we have CHO, Pulisic, Ziyech, Mount, Werner and possibly Havertz who can all play in a similar position. We weren't going to bend over backwards for a player in his 30's.

Thiago Silva is older yes and possibly past his prime but he's a leader, he has experience and will only be a short term fix leaving money for a possible Rice bid next summer. I see this move similar to Eto, one year for a proven veteran before getting new talent next year when more money is available.

i think he will be a good signing for us .. He is also someone all CBs will look upto .. i dont think an of the 4 accepts anyone in the group a leader.. the only thing i worry about is his english.. also i think by the end of the transfer window our brazilian contingent maybe completely out .. having said that we have enough frenchmen who could help him settle in.. someone like a Giroud would be critical in that.. Plus if we pair him with zouma ( i believe our best CB currently) and both french speaking could be a plus.. Someone like an AC could also learn from him...

If we sign him that suggests that we have pretty well given up on our primary targets for defenders in this window due to excessive prices. I would see him as a short term stopgap to provide some much needed experience and leadership in defense. Lack of pace would be a big concern, especially in the Premier League.

A favourtie defender of mine for a long time, and I'm sure I've advocated him in the past.  But, I can't help but feel at 36 this isn't a smart move.  Sure he's "free" but it's still a chunk of cash to lay out for a year for wages he'd likely want.  I agree that CB is a priority, as is leadership, so he checks those boxes nicely.  But I could see him coming for a year, only playing a little, and it just not being as effective as we'd hoped for.

As a matter of interest, as I know we were supposedly linked couple of Windows back, what sort of price is Issa Diop at WHU. I thought He was being mentioned in the media and the possible price didn't seem that high. I guess there is no chance now of my Ruben Dias/Romagnoli/Jason Danaher hopes now then

He's a very good defender, but can't help thinking his age is an issue. Switching to a new league at his age is a risk, not to mention a league which is fast paced and physical. Fast paced especially. It's definitely a risk, but if fees are kept low when signing him then maybe it can work out. I heard his wages are really high at PSG, so he'd need to take a big pay cut.

Ive been back and forth on this.

36 is beyond old in terms of football, but Thiago hasnt been showing too many signs of decline, he has decent pace still, and he hasnt missed many games through injury, starting 40 games a season all through his 30's.

I have no doubt he could continue to impress for a couple of years at psg, but i think there is a big question mark in whether he could adapt to english football quick enough to make his signing worth while.

On the plus side, he could provide leadership and quality to the defence for a year or 2, while we see how our ypunger players develop, and also how the market looks next summer. It would also free up funds for other areas this summer.

Overall i would be happy with this signing, as long as we also brought in a new keeper and left back, because for me, those areas are more of an issue than centre back.

Equally likely we are struggling to offload the players deemed surplus to requirements ...

I can't say I'm entirely convinced by the idea of 36-year-old Thiago Silva, who spent the past eight years playing in a relatively weak league, coming here as supposedly the miracle cure for all our defensive problems.

IF he comes, he'll be a more of a stopgap slash playing defensive coach than a miracle cure.
