Reece James

Funny considering yesterday there were reports we would reject bids of £100m+ for James if they came in.

Let's be honest, The Times have jumped on Chelsea fan misery and report a load of unfounded toss.

No one is bidding £100m for him. The max we could have gotten was £80m last summer. Anyone coming in this summer after he has missed another 70% of the season would start at £50m, & go up to £75m (combination of fixed & variables). If you had £100m to spend on a RB it would be gusto you be making the offer for.

And if such a bid came on for Gusto we would have to to accept it.  Not because I want him sold but because we need to get ourselves out of the financial hole we have created.

Not that I expect anyone to bid that for him

If Real offered 50 million or more we should take it. We get a little more out of our financial hole and they get Hazard mkII.

Hate to say that I agree - Although, we will need to rinse them out of as much as we can, and I think 50m is a little low.

James at his fit and best is £150m player in the current market. Up there with the very best in his position in the world....

We all know the sad reality however that James is fit for a small fraction of the time, and at his best for an even smaller fraction. As such, we have a very difficult decision to make. Personally, it feels to me that there is more value to the team in keeping Gallagher than James - although I think both are likely to go.

Finally getting James his surgery and a really long lay off to sell him before we see if it worked would be pretty daft.

But not surprising

Yeah, this is literally the worse possible time to sell James after he's finally got the much needed surgery.

Real were very interested in Reece a year or so back. But hard to imagine he would fetch much of a fee with his recent injury history. Would be a risky signing for any team. I suspect this rumor is being generated more around the need for the club to raise funds for PSR compliance. If we are truly considering offers for Reece then I suspect none of our academy players are unsellable. Perhaps they will try to offload Colwill as he would likely generate a bigger fee.

A world class player in our midst but cant stay fit. Given the emergence of Gusto, not surprised Reece is being linked away and im not sure the club will miss him given the last two and a half years, he's hardly played.

played 8 league games all season this year.

played 16 league games last season

played 26 league games 21/22

played 32 20/21

played 24 19/20

missed one game 18/19 in the championship.

I hate to say it, we need to cash in on him and he needs to move to Spain or Italy where his body will be suited to the slower less physical league - his body just cant compete in the premiership. his injuries are getting worse as he gets older. He either takes on Ryan Giggs physio, stops buying sports cars every month or moves to a warmer climate and less intense leagues.

Seeing him leave will be like the last light on the Italic switching off. I'll be gutted but if we can rob a club of 65/70 million...

As Loz pointed out in and the Palmer thread a footballers career can go by in the blink of an eye, and Reeces may well be shorter than most because of his injuries.

Now IF this is where we are for at least a few years, can Reece afford to turn down a City, Real or Bayern in the hope everyone can stay fit and we might do some good recruitment and we might get back to the CL, when the others are in it every single season?

Goals conceded per 90 minutes of time on the pitch for each of our defenders in the PL this season :

Player GA/90
Levi Colwill 1.30
Malo Gusto 1.42
Axel Disasi 1.56
Thiago Silva 1.68
Ben Chilwell 1.69
Marc Cucurella 1.84
Trevoh Chalobah 2.27
Benoît Badiashile 2.36
Reece James 2.56

Pretty much, but the GA/90 is a little misleading as so many variables (sample size behind the index, goalkeeper [Reece never had Petrovic there]), other team pressure, opposition).

We've seen enough of James to know just how good he is.  Problem is the first trait of any player is availability, and that is Reece's worse trait.

I can't see a big offer around 100M for him after a season of absence. Even for PSG or City, they need a bit of assurance the player is capable of playing through a season. A lower bid ( say 60) won't be accepted even by the ownership group, let alone the outrage from the fans. If he has a relatively injury free season, I anticipate a big move for him in 2025, and the ownership group will allow it to cover the cost.

May I say if we have to sell Reece to finance the acquisition of complete dross like Sanchez, Cuco, Ugo, Madueke.. or on unknown bets like Angelo, Casadei, Santos, Fofana,  while we still have Kepa, Lukaku, Ziyech, Sarr on our books .. shows a disaster-class on how to manage a football team.. clowns the lot of them.

Surely this is a flawed statistic though due to amount of game time with the largest number of appearances smoothing the results to a  ore accurate level. It would be interesting to see this in comparison to the number of 90s played as well. James is clearly an outlier.

I also think CB pairings are important as well.

I agree with this. I can see them getting him fit and then protecting him for sale next summer if they meet FFP this year. Can see him playing CB in a 3 or DM rather than bombing on from RB

Interesting statistic nonetheless ...

I've often thought James was at fault defensively for a number of goals we've conceded, but he always seems to get a free ride LOL. I guess a lot of fan opinion is basically a popularity thing ... :-)

Take the money and run. What’s the point of being a World Class Crock. Full backs, particularly forward pressing, chance providing, non mistake making players are an asset, but 100 M for one sounds improbable. What would Ashley Cole’s value be at RJ’s age I wonder

No club is paying £100m let alone £80m for a fullback anymore with PSR now in affect.

Should be sorted by match minutes

On the face of it, it's clear that Colwill + Disasi have been the better CBs based on appearances/goal conceded per 90. Both of which IMO need a leader next to them but if there is any pairing that needs we should build on, its those two. Game at the Ethiad a prime example.

This screams to me dysfunctional defensive structure.
