Mason Mount

There are no guarantees he will ever become as good as Lamps though. He is the least of our problems in midfield, but to be fair he has been underwhelming this season when you consider he has taken over as our dead ball specialist from Willian. His return has poor in comparison to last season, could be the 2nd season dip most young players seem to go through (see Greenwood).
For me on current form when you consider England’s U21 midfield talents (he is 22 now), he is way behind Foden, and Smith Rowe shades it for me /creativity & output wise. In an ideal world he wouldn’t be starting so much games, but that is on Lamps and our slim midfield options. Like I said, least of our problems in the middle of the park.

I can’t google his assists (the work WiFi won’t let me google things for some reason) but with the amount of goals we’ve scored from corners already this season they’ve got to be higher than Willians seasonal average of about 3? Also Mason doesn’t always take them, Willian seemed to insist on taking every corner when he was on the pitch despite his delivery being non-existent!

Building a team around mount 😳

Our most successful era was built around another Chelsea boy who survived multiple managers.

Captain. Leader. Legend.

I reckon if we want to play with a double pivot with Kante and Mount we need to go with 3 CB's so Silva can step into midfield and help with playing the ball forward and so we have some protection behind Mount and Kante when they do venture forward:

                Mendy

        Azpi- Silva- Zouma

James- Kante- Mount- Ben

                  Ziyech

           Giroud - Werner

Mount next to Kante or Gilmour in a pivot is our best midfield at the moment.

Glad to see him wearing the armband too, thoroughly deserved it for the last season and a half.

I know this sounds absolutely mental because he is quite clearly our best player but I’m unsure I’d want him in the double pivot. Gilmour was a breath of fresh air in midfield, spraying balls to attacking players with his neat 1 or 2 touch football, and Mount can contribute too, taking the ball up or starting an attack.

What can Kante do? Attacking wise of course, he’s miles ahead of Mount and Gilmour defensively but then, we’d be weaker offensively.

I can’t see Kante doing some of the passes Gilmour did today. Nice problem to have though.

Suppose that's the good thing about a back three, you have your wings backs that help out in that department. Lets not forget we won the league with Kante and Matic in a double pivot.

Agree about Gilmour though, he's special. Will be starting every game for us in the next year or so.

i dont know.. his returns too were not good enough.. just 1-2 goals in 10-12 matches directly contributed to SFL's downfall... Hope he takes it on him now to prove himself..

Mount will have a task on his hand now. He was easily one of Frank's favourites, but what made him a favourite to Frank doesn't necessarily make him one for another manager, they may be looking for different qualities than what he can offer. But ultimately it's up to him now, no more favouritism, no more mentoring.. he has to prove himself all over again.

Well he deserved that "position". I dont think Mount will have a problem with any manager and especially now when he's an established player. Managers just like his sort of players. Head down, working hard.

I think people will be surprised, I can see Mount, James and Abraham still starting a lot of games. Abraham not as much due to the competition in that place but he won't be completely sidelined.

Mount always gives 100% for the club every time he plays. More than can be said for some of the other players. He has had his off days but has been one of our best players under Frank overall. Perhaps that is why Frank favored him, because he knew Mount wouldn't let him down.

So people are saying he is our best player? I honestly don't think he makes it to starting 11 in Everton, Leicester and Aston Villa so what does that says about Chelsea standards these days?

Dont be so ridiculous, he`s an England international and was excellent in the majority of games he played, or did he get picked for that because Southgate is his dad too? He has comfortably been consistently our best midfielder this season. The need to disparage him by a certain section of our fans is embarrassing after years of them begging for us to have academy players break through into the first team. If you dont see what he brings to our team that that says much much more about you than him.

Unlike Jorginho and Kovacic, who don't run for the Chelsea shirt and have less goals than Mount. Kante runs more but has the attacking nous of a chihuahua. The only one that I see as future is Gilmour, in a partnership with Mount. But then, it's down to the new manager.

I have read a lot that Tuchel will prefer to play Havertz to him - I doubt that as what I have seen previously at Mainz and Dortmund he is not really into the no. 10 types but likes workers, too.

Mason Mount deserves to be in any starting 11 for the current squad. He has outworked everyone not named Kante.

That being said I would rather see him playing more as an 8 (box to box) rather than in more advanced areas. His qualities are work rate, playing simple and scoring outside the box. He should play deeper and take advantage of the space that will be left in front of him with Kante playing in front of the back four and Havertz playing as an attacking midfielder in the inside right channel or half space.

This would be the most balanced midfield we could have and would take advantage of everyone's skill sets and attributes.
