July 8, 20215 yr Had a poor first half although I thought he improved the further the match went on. £100m is a ridiculous amount being quoted, half that would be too much.
July 8, 20215 yr See some people saying his lack of forward play watching the tournament is a turn off but he's already said himself Southgate has instructed him to do this to enable Phillips to be more aggressive. He's said previously he wants to emulate Yaya Toure's style of play ideally and you can see that at times playing for WHam. Think if we can get him for £50-70m we'd be getting ourselves a very good deal, he'd stay the rest of his career if we allow it and gives us a leader, possible future captain, alongside other young players like Mount, R.James and Chilwell for a solid core in the group over the next 10 years. Helps too that he's PL established and already has strong relationship ties to our team so should settle in from day one.
July 8, 20215 yr I thought he played well. No idea where this "terrible" is coming from. He's there to break up attacks, not so much for building them from the midfield it seems, in Southgate's system. I thought he did that well.

Same as Gary Cahill copped here for a decade. If you're not the latest prospect from France who has a good radar on Statsbomb then you're terrible.
July 8, 20215 yr I have not been impressed with Rice during the Euro 2020. Nothing he does stands out. I don't get the hype. I would much rather that Chelsea go after an attacking midfielder like Bellingham or Pedri, two much younger players whose respective ceilings are much higher than Rice. July 8, 20215 yr For a possession side you definitly couldn't pair up Rice & Kante as your double six. It would either have to be Rice with a fantastic ballplayer or Kante with a Jorginho type.

Midfield is all about the engine. Rice could comfortably replicate Jorginho/Kovacic and perhaps even improve on them given he is a better recovery defender than both. I think there are better options but Rice would suit fine.

Jorginho is the key to the great build up we have seen under Tuchel though in my view. We can disagree on that but he's very involved in everything we do. From what i've seen in the Euros (West Ham is different because they sit back) he's really struggled on the ball. Slow to pass the ball and almost exclusively sideways or backwards when he does. You need someone in midfield who's going to feed our attackers the football and a Rice & Kante pair would struggle to do so. Edited July 8, 20215 yr by Sindre
July 8, 20215 yr It's been interesting watching Jorginho in the tournament, he has been playing better for Italy than us though was restricted by the Spain pressing game.

Isn’t that because Barella & Verratti have moved the ball upfield quicker? His issue has always been when he is pressed, and has to distribute the ball under pressure.

In my opinion, I think the addition of rice or Tchuemeni (butchered that I’m sure) would free Kante up to push further up the pitch and create the havoc that he creates. it would also allow Chelsea to play with a back four since Rice wouldn’t require Kante or Kovacic to sit right next to him, or have three center backs behind him. I just think the addition of rice or Tchuemeni gives Chelsea that much more flexibility in how they can lineup and play.
July 8, 20215 yr Don‘t see it at all tbh - can‘t understand the pricetag the least. If you play him alone in front of a b4 while pushing Kante and Kova further forward he‘d need a more than solid passing game - also under extreme pressure. Maybe I missed it big time but that I don‘t see at all in him. the problem to play with a b4 isn‘t Jorgi in front of them but that Christensen/Rüdiger didn‘t look reliable enough when they played it before - maybe they are ready now who knows but Rice wouldn‘t be the solution to that specific problem. Imho he (his profile) isn‘t one for the top clubs - maybe in a Mourinho team but he ain‘t coaching top sides no more either.

Southgate telling him to be more defensive doesn't stop him from playing the ball to get his team mates in a better position.

July 9, 20215 yr I feel Jorginho is a good player. But I feel a system where we play him in front of the defense does not work against some opponents. Maybe against opponents like Man Utd, or maybe against Arsenal towards the end of last season, or maybe against some opponents last season. So, because of that we can be using that system at times but in some matches, I will like us to have a different system. And again I kind of like for a team to have not too many different formations, but at least more than one formation. I feel like last season, we only used one system. I want us to have at least two different formations this coming season, so that when we are playing against some teams, we can use the second formation. In the system we had last season, I feel Jorginho has a weakness to his game, physical weakness. That could be a weakness against good opponents. So I feel when we are playing some opponents, we should play a solid 4231 with two solid DMs. And that is why I think we need to buy another strong DM like Declan Rice for that type of system for next season so that we can use the two systems next season. I don't know if we have the financial muscle to do this kind of thing where two players who I think are world class will be playing thesame position throughout a season. This will mean reduced playing time for them. I don't know if Declan Rice can accept to come to us and be doing that, and I don't know if Jorginho can also be playing that role for us. But, if they do, I feel it will be very nice. Then we can challenge for the premier league and the champions league again.
July 10, 20215 yr Jorginho is doing really well in 4-3-3 as the lone 6 for Italy. We are playing double pivot under Tuchel. If we go for Rice how do you guys see us setup. I am thinking double pivot is the route...

Depending on the opposition, upcoming Champions League matches that week, fatigue etc.. I think it would be 2 from Jorginho, Kante and Rice. Next season there would be enough games for all 3 to get sufficient game time and rotation, especially when you factor in the Club World Cup in December.
July 12, 20215 yr The euros are over. Now we will see if we are going all out for him, and alternative or if our summer comes up empty.
July 12, 20215 yr Best player on the pitch yesterday, showed exactly why we should make him a priority signing.
