Edouard Mendy to Chelsea!

His first mistake tonight but thankfully it didn’t cost us and he seems to not be the type to dwell on a mistake and move on. Very calm and assured.

To be fair, the original mistake was Zouma’s he started to drift out wide when he was never going there which left the massive gap in the middle which led to Mendy’s mistake. Fortunately as you say neither cost us at the end of the day so no big deal.

I'm going to go Zouma for that one to be honest, I agree with Rob Green.

Mendy hesitated but I feel as if he was right to, if he keeps running and gets to the ball that's still a 50/50 tackle with his feet, and if he misses that it's very likely a red.

I hate to do this as he's been fantastic in so many other ways but on penalty's he's absolutely horrible.

We have a 4th sub for extra time in both the FA Cup and CL, we absolutely must save that slot for a LVG style keeper change if/when it comes to it.

I don't disagree.  I actually thought he was wrong to charge out last week against Leeds also - Bamford still had a hell of a lot to do to finish from where he collected the ball.

Calm down Mendy, nobody panic!!

If the last two league games are anything to go by, then it seems like he panics when the defenders are beaten. He needs to have more faith in Silva and Zouma's ability to make the recovery. Both the Bamford goal and penalty today didn't need to happen. Against Leeds, there was no guarantee Bamford was going to score, Zouma has the pace to square up to Bamford and make it awkward, Bamford would still need to have got a decent shot in if Mendy stays on his line.

Today was much worse though and after looking at it again, it doesn't get any better. Silva is beaten in the air, but instead of just trusting Silva's experience to deal with Calvert-Lewin, Mendy charges forward needlessly and gives away a penalty. Silva wasn't even completely beaten, he was still goal side of Calvert-Lewin and with how good of a defender he is, I am possitive he would have dealt with the situation easily enough if Mendy didn't get involved.

Needs to be doing better. Has dropped his form massively. Cost us a point with his reckless challange at Everton and cost us 2 today with his laughable effort on their goal. Even Kepa would have saved that.

Put that with the terrible defending by James against Prodance in the Wolves game and these basic errors cost us 6 points. Not to mention James challange for the pen at Arsenal.

Even with the Arsenal debacle Frank would be getting far less heat if these players just did the basic things right in these other 3 games.

The only major gripe I have with him is penalties, he is hopeless at them.

Other than that couldn't disagree more, the last month would have likely been even worse if it weren't for him.

Fair enough fella, dont see how you can defend his laughable effort today and the pen at Everton though.

Far too close to criticise the keeper from there, can't blame the keeper for not keeping a header out from 6 yards. The defense should not be letting an opposition player have that sort of time anywhere near our 6 yard box.

Nothing to do with our CB acting dead in the middle of the pitch?

Lol. Too right. Not to mention Rudiger's failure to put the ball out of play when we had a man down.

He couldn't do anything in El Ghazi's goal to be fair.

It was Azpi's fault.

Are you sure about that? Because Christensen was on the floor Azpi had to cover the centre half's position and moved to defend Grealish who was closer to the ball. So either Christensen has to get back or Kante has to drop in (which he tried to do but he was too slow.)

Think it was all too easy to get a little carried away when he first arrived and kept all those clean sheets, in thinking we had the next Banks, Buffon, Cech............whoever. Lets face it, after Kepa, ANYONE would have been a marked improvement.

I think in recent matches we can see that he is a decent keeper but has his flaws and will be liable to make the odd gaff. There are better keepers out there but he's a big upgrade on what we had and hopefully will continue to improve (and maybe save the odd penalty!)

Agreed, I think we can probably call the current run a reversion to the mean.

Saying that, he's by no means performed badly (a couple of shaky moments perhaps). I'll be the first to admit that goalkeeping is the area of football I understand the least, but nonetheless it seemed to me that he was absolutely crucial in boosting the overall performance of the defence immediately after his arrival. We are still seeing the benefits of that now, even if the overall form of the team has nosedived (for various reasons).

Totally agree. He wasn't making a lot of saves in the matches where we kept clean sheets and I remarked as much. He was  great at dealing with crosses and high balls into the box which in itself is a huge improvement on Kepa but we wasn't really tested that much in terms of stopping shots.

He did make some mistakes and he had a blunder against Everton but overall he's good.

The one thing that stands out for me is that it looks like he kind of sucks at penalties, looks like he's always going for the wrong side. I think statistically that's the one thing that Kepa had better than him, who cares...

Cech should be able to help him on pens. To begin with I think several ones beat him then he started to get better at saving them. That one night in Munich comes to mind.
