Kai Havertz

This is an interesting time for us.  No one can dispute we probably have higher priority positions to address, but we have a chance to sign a generational talent at a time when we should have the cash.

Watching PSG today, the quality of Neymar and Mbappe is something to see.  They didn't even flinch spending 180M on those players (a whole different FFP story).  Barcelona spent over 100M+ on Griezeman and 120M+ on Dembele.  Liverpool 70M and 75M+ on Allison and VVD.  United 70M on Harry M.  Arsenal 65M+ Pepe.  Juventus goodness knows how much on CR7.

My point is if we're quibbling over 10M or so we aren't in the above league.  It's painful also as we want to happen, and see how often we waste 30-50M on players, and even 70M on Kepa.  Back to my first point of an interesting time for us.  Are we looking up to compete with CL elite or across at Arsenal and Spurs.

Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen still in talks for Kai Havertz. The player is pushing. The two clubs had a contact also on Monday - there’s a distance of €20M between Chelsea first bid and Bayer price tag. Chelsea are going to use also add ons as part of the deal

Havertz has asked again to leave the club... but it’s up to Chelsea now. “Pay what we ask or we don’t sell any player”- German clubs way. Key days are coming. Havertz still considered “priority target” for Chelsea

No new information there. Speculation was we offered around 72mill and Bayer want 90mill.

Obviously Havertz wants this deal otherwise this would not even be a thing.

Both sides feel they have the advantage. Same old same old.

I see your point, and I think that 2-3 years ago I would have wholeheartedly agreed but the reality is football economics are sharply adjusting to the COVID-world. There is no guarantee that Bayer Leverkusen, or any other club without a generous private owner, is capable of solvency in 12 months time let alone having money to dictate terms when it comes to transfers. The difference between this time and the 2008 GFC is the bottom has utterly fallen out of the media market to the extent that even behemoths like Sky are in financial peril. The influx of corporate money into football is set to rapidly shrink, and being one of the few clubs not requiring to furlough its employees, Chelsea's hierarchy are no doubt aware that patience will reward them in the new economic order.

In saying that, if this deal does not progress due to an abundance of caution on Chelsea's part, then that is no loss. There will always be another Kai Havertz, another generational talent for sale, and we are in a position where the longer we wait, the greater our buying power. Secondly, look at the list above and tell me how many of those players have provided a genuine return on investment? I count Mbappe, Allison and Van Djik. Barcelona have spent half a billion Euros on players that have made more or less no difference to their team and turned a powerhouse into a puppy in the space of a decade.

If anything, the above list shows that we must show an abundance of caution.

I let the club decide what is the right amount to spend in this window as they are the only ones that know the books. Looks like we are taking an advantage of the window where not many clubs can afford to spend. Next summer this situation (hopefully) is back to normal world order.

We are in a situation where the possible 'next (add a legend)' is very willing to sign for us. He might end up like Hazard or Robben but I am certain we will get back the money we spent on him (or will spend). If the books are okay we are making an investment that could be a transforming one.

I don't think he will end up like Hazard or Robben because at the time they were at Chelsea Real Madrid was a big deal and Chelsea was a rising a star on the horizon. Now it's been 15-16 years of dominance or at least regular good performances. These players have grown watching Chelsea so we are no more a transition stop before the final destination. PL has started its expansion something like 20 years ago which is exactly the life span of the likes of Pulisic, Havertz, Timo Werner. I don't think in Real, Barca or Munich they see what Hazard, Courtois or Arjen saw.

I still think Real, Barcelona, Bayern, Manu are in a league of their own. Liverpool and City are pushing that envelope. I mean a combination of wealth, stature and merits in (recent) football. Manu is on a dip after SAF but they are still making so much money every year.

Chelsea is on the second tear with Arsenal, Dortmund, PSG, Atletico and so on.

You are absolutely right about players like Havertz who have only known Chelsea being a huge club as they are in that young age. With Frank and the way I we try to play young players are very interested in Chelsea.

Anyway on a sidenote check that new Anelka documentary on Netflix. After watching that I started thinking whether Eden made the right choice and how long will it take they accept him. Eden is a good lad and if the stories are true about Real being very harsh environment for new players he might well struggle on and off the pitch. Hope it all ends well with him.

I personally cant see Chelsea paying 90 mill of whatever currency up front for this lad

He's an excellent prospect of course and likely the real deal, but with zero punters paying to go into the Bridge since March and who knows when capacity of 42,000 fans will be back ? - not next month imo. And when you are allowed back to live football I hope its restriction free as who really fancies trying to get in line for  beers at 1/2 time, chant and sing and celebrate goals etc. with a face mask on ?

Another burning issue rather than scoring more goals next season how about conceding about 2/3 less and spending any money available in that area of the team ?

Not sure the match day thing is that relevant as long as football is aired on telly, I am sure I read somewhere that its only about 12% of income compared to broadcast rights and sponsors etc.

Incorrect, we are the Chelsea and we are the best, we are the Chelsea so f**k all the rest. f**k em all, f**k em all, United, West Ham, Liverpool, coz we are the Chelsea and we are the best.

It’s in a football chant so it must be correct 🙂

Some sources claim that Leverkusen identified a replacement for Kai, the 24 year old Patrik Schick that is on loan at RB Leipzig.

If it is written I believe it.
