April 10, 20179 yr Really guy's really can we have a mature civil discussion about football matter's he made a terrible mistake at 19 most teenagers do and some are unlucky enough to have hurt someone fatally. If it was my daughter i would want maximum punishment my son the opposite. I am sure he sincerely regretted that day and i hope he does something to warn of the dangers of drink driving.

Alonso has nice long legs, allowing him to gallop up and down that left hand side like some sort of demented Black Beauty.
April 10, 20179 yr Surely the time for this discussion was when we signed him, all of sudden people have just realised that he made a terrible mistake at 19 years old and some are now laying in to him, give it a rest. I'm sure he feels terrible about it and regrets it immensely, can we move on?
April 10, 20179 yr Alonso has been growing on me lately. Looking forward to copping his kits Cesar tweeted this Edited April 10, 20179 yr by Satah

I only said that, if the information in that wikipedia extract is correct, Alonso would not have been driving under the influence (by any country's standards). I never mentioned anything about seat belts, and I have no idea where that information came from and how reliable it is, but I do believe that if an adult passenger neglects to wear a seat belt then she shares the responsibility for the consequences of that negligence. Indeed I did give my take on what multiple posters said, not just you. Apologies if this wasn't clear. On the seat belt issue: somehow I don't think a driver whose passenger lost his/her life in an accident would feel much better knowing that it was the passenger's choice not to wear a seat belt and break the law. That law, and the law about how much alcohol you're allowed to drink before driving (high or low, doesn't matter) are in place for a reason: safety. And probably Alonso feels horrible about the whole matter, as any well-thinking person would. But he's been punished, and will probably never repeat the mistake. He can focus on football now, and continue the good season that he's having. Whatever my (or anybody's) view on the matfer, I still cheer him on and am happy he's surprising us with his displays. I even forgive him for the occasional hapless goal celebration
April 10, 20179 yr While expressing my condolences for the victim and her family and condemning Alonso's conduct insofar as he broke the law, he was ultimately punished, even if you disagree with the punishment. That's all that should be said on the matter IMO. I believe it does nobody any good to relive the incident years later.

If you don't like it, get out of my car. Yes it's a safety rule and rule of law but the onus is not on the driver legally. Yes maybe as a duty of care but not legally responsible for a passenger not wearing one. Hence modern cars have the beeping noises that persist and get louder to remind the occupants. And that is why the police will fine passenger and not driver. At worst the driver gets a strong verbal warning.

Don't be so sure about that. We have zero tolerance here in Hungary...

If I get pulled up by the cops and a passenger isn't clicked,he/she gets fined not me. I'm not advocating being nonchalant but it's not very practical and possible to check every one is wearing a belt always. That depends on where you are in the world. It is the driver's responsibility in all jurisdictions in Australia, including for learner drivers accompanied by their instructor. An unsecured child is an aggravating factor and you would likely have to answer to Child Protection as well as the courts. Driving while drunk is an act of negligence. It is an established fact that alcohol in any concentration above zero will impair your driving ability and judgement. To then also do double the speed limit and have an unsecured passenger is even more negligent and Alonso should have been punished severely by the courts, regardless of any compensation or civil damages paid to the victim's family.
April 11, 20179 yr What l like about Alonso is his passing prowess from the left, we have been lacking a left footer since Mata. He does move about awkwardly and defensively he is a little bit nervous but in the current market for his price, we got a good player. He is starting a lot, but apparently he wasn't brought in to start and be more of a cover option in 4 or 5 positions. Which is interesting - could mean we sign another LB this summer? Great Free kick, +1 for nailing Belerin

April 26, 20179 yr Another excellent performance. Amazing leg eye coordination, always seems to connect with the dropping ball.
April 26, 20179 yr Think the United game highlighted just how integral to our season he has been. Echoing @ashwin it was another solid performance from Alonso last night and he's ability in the air has become a good outlet for us.
April 26, 20179 yr Never expected Alonso to turn into such a quality signing for us, he's a very elegant footballer, which i didn't expect. When i heard we signed him I really didn't know much about him, but was expecting an Ivanovic type (centre back converted to fullback), but he's so good going forward as well, and has great technique.
April 26, 20179 yr We had our worst performance when he was out, he came back and we beat 2 pretty good teams. He could run, cross a ball, put a pass in, score a few goals, and an outlet for the long ball down the flank because he's aerial ability is better than most fulllbacks. The scouting team did a good job in this instance.

The scouting team did a good job in this instance. But hes slower than Bellerin and therefore isn't a good full back, that's how it works, it doesn't matter if you are good technically, good in the air and decent defensively whilst bring an all round balance to the squad we haven't had for a few years, if you can't run as fast as Usain bolt you aren't a good left back, simples.... At least that's what fifa and occasionally this forum tells me ;) ;)
April 26, 20179 yr Alonso has managed to work most of the weaker points of his game to solid enough attributes over the course of the season. He is now a very reliable player. A solid all-round wing-back. And he takes a smashing freekick. Still think the price was too high, but the results have exceeded mine (and many others expectations). He's done well.
May 8, 20179 yr Great player and perfect for this system. Still think we need someone with pace as an option there to offer something different when we need them though.
May 8, 20179 yr Second only to Fabregas in the MOTM vote for me, I have really grown to love Alonso. The fact he didn't get in the team of the year of Rose is nothing short of a disagree tbh.

He's only played half a season, he shouldn't really be in the top 5 choices for that position this season.

Not other LB has really played consistently like that to come near those two. Bertrand been good but not as good imo but make no mistake about it, Alonso should have defo been in that team of the season. Played much more than Rose, been very consistent going forward and defensively. Anyway, a magnificent piece of business done by Conte to bring him in as many were unsure, including me but really a massive fan of him.
