Timo Werner

That is basically what it is all about. Trying to balance the wage structure

Yeah exactly, personally I'd much rather have him over Pulisic and Ziyech as he at least puts in effort and his runs can mess with defences (not to mention his G/A in 2021 was actually pretty good), but if he's earning 250k plus then it isn't worth it

I'm happy we managed to sell him for a decent amount and get rid of his high wages. Just not technical or smart enough in confined spaces, maybe it works out for him in the bundesliga, hopefully he won't miss his flight though.

Timo Werner and Thomas Tuchel fell out, Behind closed doors, the duo are understood to have argued in a private meeting about how Werner was being used and whether he deserved to start more matches. (@NizaarKinsella) #CFC

Only the player has himself to blame, he's the one missing the opportunities to score, let's not forget he's missed quite a few

Football (indeed life!) is never that binary.

Timo contributed to over 25 goals/assists in his first season, particularly during the start. Sure he missed some sitters, but lets not re-write history, he played a massive part during his first season that culminated in us winning the champions league.

It all fell apart, starting from midway through the first season, and was a downhill spiral from then on.

Yes, he missed some chances, but post Lampard he rarely got played up front, and even more rarely got played through on goal. Timo's decline roughly coincides with the overall attacking decline of our team. As TT has the team playing slower, more controlled, less risky football, that saw Timo get less chances, which results in less goals/assists, which results in less game time. A vicious circle.

Timo will score goals, get assists and win pens, but to do that he needs to play in a team that plays the ball forward quickly for him to run on to, in much the same way that we did during the first 1/4 of his first season and the way RL did before we purchased him.

So...I disagree that he only has himself to blame. We can also blame the change of manager, the change of style, the change of pace in which we play, the missed chances, and then the vicious cycle once the teams overall attacking ambition/intent dried up.

To a degree you are right Jim and it could be applied to any of our forwards. Salah, Mane and Benzema would not do as well here as they do for their current sides. Is just how TT sets us up to play. Tuchelball, like sarriball only more German.

275k off the wages is £14m per season.

Werner had 3 years left on his £50m transfer, so £30m amortization, so that is nearly covered by the fee.

Good buisness, that £14m per season, is the equivalent of a £40m signing on a 6 year deal, on about £150k a week. Crazy how much we were paying him tbh.

Hopefully gives us some room to bring in some fresh ideas, especially if CHO and Ziyech go to.

I think this is a mistake. Our energy is so much better with him in the team.

I've no doubt he'll go back to Leipzig and look like the old player within a month.

We play with the handbrake on.

It’s not a mistake it’s a gift him leaving.

The only way Werner was going to find his way back into the team, and be effective, would be under a new manager. He had clearly fallen out with Tuchel. If Tuchel ends up leaving in the next year or so, we might regret letting Werner go in the future. But I have never been convinced by him as the answer to our striker issues. He is too wasteful and doesn't seem to know how to stay onside.

Shame it didn't work out as he seemed a genuinely nice lad. Loved his effort to start with even when he was struggling he would put 100% in but last season the effort wasn't the same and I recall him bottling challenges and with his finishing getting even worse it was time to cut our losses and move him on.

Good Luck Timo....................

He had his best form in the months after Lampard left and Tuchel played him as a LF or ST. If anything he went on his first goal drought after Lamapard constantly played him out wide as a LW, he was electric in his first few games here before that happened

I think we can safely say that not just Timo, but Ziyech, Pulisic and now CHO have all made it rather clear they would be happy to leave, TT would happily let them go and so would the club if an acceptable offer came in.

With Ziyech we want to sell him not loan him and that caused his move to Milan to stall out as the only interest has been in loans. Nobody has shown anything more than a passing interested in Pulisic, and we are unsure if we are willing to sell CHO or just loan him out. The only 2 "forwards" TT actually appears to rate from last season are two natural attacking midfielders, Havertz and Mount.

Of that group I would still keep Ziyech. While he can be frustrating at times, he is also capable of some outstanding creative play and has scored some memorable goals. He also knows how to take a corner.

No issue with Werner going, happily get him off the wage bill. Last season could have been his to prove a point, but then came Lukaku  whom single handedly took us down a level. Pullisic and CHO both lost that zip and speed made them the players once were before injuries, doubt they will get it back. I would keep Pullisic, still got few goals in him and the experience. CHO, happy for a loan and subsequent sale if he proves his worth elsewhere. Ziyech is a bit different, he has that creativity no others have. Although he's limited, I'd think if a manager plays to his strength, he still has a lot to contribute.

Just not one that fits TT ethos.

This. I honestly don't know who to keep. With tuchel it all depend on how he want to play and it changes every game.

Can we just have Willian and Pedro back. It is so much easier with those two.
