Mason Mount

Rewatching the final right now. He played quite rhe forward role but even with the same general setup of a 343 you see a world of difference between the Southgate version compared to the Tuchel one. First of all we don‘t have 2/3 ball hogs upfront like Sterling and Kane. No ball circulation there, next to no penetration into the box as well.
Playing Rice and Phillips as CM is almost a different sport compared to say a Kova/Jorgi pairing.

Although the start seemed a promising implementation of Shaw/Trippier they actually stayed rather deep for the most time meaning you have Mount playing mostly a 3vs6 with two of those three forwards hogging the ball as well or diving at the first contact so that there hardly was any possession and positional play which I think very beneficial for Mounts input.

I also think he is way overplayed, already was at Chelsea in the final weeks, and ran out of steam. No idea really why Foden or Grealish didn‘t get some of his minutes.

Grealish great on the ball yet has no pace and Foden could have replaced him early on yet got injured.

I thought Mount closed down well on Sunday in the first half though also noticed at times he was ball watching some time after the first half. Also during that half he got the best break down by the touch line and trying to put it on to the toes of Harry Kane.

Though it did not come off it was one of our better moves and then Grealish came on and threatened twice to do some dribbling yet never saw the ball again as no-one found him.

I thought Sterling was having a nightmare linking up with Kane and Shaw so it was difficult to get any momentum going on the left.  I wondered if Sterling should have come off with Mount moving more forward in the 2nd half then thought no way will Southgate take Sterling off.  Or Kane should have come off with Sterling moving more central so he only got the final ball.

Our first game is the 11th in the Super Cup either they will play some part in this or most likely in our first league game which If I'm remembering correctly is the 14th. So we're still looking at over 2 weeks.

I wouldn't be too concerned I'd rather they have their break and come back fresher rather than rushed back, especially considering how deep our squad is. Let's not forget how much TT improved some of our players in such a short amount of time, even 1 week/ 1 week and a half of pre season is better than none.

So isn’t 1 week/1 week and a half pre season classed as rushing it ?
i agree it’s good for them to get a good break but a short pre season could end in disaster for some.
Cant see anyone of them being up to speed by the 11th but I hope I’m wrong.

I guess it depends how much emphasis and importance we place on playing actual matches. For me I would agree with you that it's not the longest amount of time and definitely not ideal.

However, I think Mount amongst others will still get plenty of time to work with the coaches since we're not at the part of the season where TT took over and we had to prep for two games per week.

As training will be less hectic with less focus on specific opponents, I would assume that 1 and a half weeks with Tuchel for some will still be enough for them to at least slowly hit match fitness, its not like we dont have a large squad in which we can slowly introduce players back in by the start of the season.

Since they've been playing nonstop football for a year. These past 2/3 weeks or however long it's been since the Euros ended shouldn't effect their match fitness too much. I would still expect some match fitness my only fear would be that some could be at risk of overdoing it or burning out.

So the coming season and Mason now needs to take the final step, has he got it in his locker to step up to the Lampard, Gerrard standard, definitely needs to score more goals and assiststo go with his undoubted talent, a few more like the CL assist will suffice..

Personally i don't want to put pressure on him to replicate Lampard goal scoring numbers. Lampard was an anomaly and almost impossible to replicate.

I'm happy with Mason going 10-15 goals in all comps a season. He brings so much more than just end product with his work rate etc.

I think he'll put that on himself, Lampard had so much more to his game than incredulous goals, Mason knows Energy and work rate won't continue to cut it, when Goals win games, just saying he knows he needs to score more, here is hoping...

He was only one off double figures last season so hopefully he can build on that !

This is a very unfair view peddled by opposition on Mason. He has great engine and work rate but over the last 12 months he has become a very clever operation between the lines and also cutting in and beating his man 1v1..

the truth is he has played almost a 80-100 games in the last 14 months which showed in the Euros.. yes he needs to score more but saying he is only energy and work rate currently is just wrong.

I aint opposition, so can add a critique if needed, Chelseas big miss last season was goals from MF, and don't dare quote Jorgis 7 pens, if say Dave took pens, we'd of had a very poor output..10 PL goals is a nice target 13 in 73, definitely a work in progress

That gif doesn't show it all, Matip was furious after the free kick was given he was acting like he's totally mad. In fact Salah and others acted in a similar way to every given thing that didn't go their way in direct duels but apparently only 1 team failed to behave in a proper manner according to the FA.

Mason Money Mount. That bit of skill is outrageous, aside from that I do wish he looked up at the big chance he had and passed to either Lukaku or Kai. I'm sure Tuchel will point this out to him and Mason will get a lot more assists this season. I expect Mount to regularly get double digits in the prem in both goals and assists.
