Chelsea v AC Milan (CL) Wed 5th Oct 2022 20:00 GMT

A must win game and we delivered. It remind me of that Juventus game last season, best performance of the season ( up to date), completely overran them after half time, and the only unfortunate coincidence was one of our key defender went off. It's still early but Auba is proving the difference, he doesn't have to run or touch the ball a lot, but got that sharp movement and great finish in the box. Unlike Lukaku, he moves when the goal chances are coming. James is top class, god forbid if he's injured. Silva is still so good in a back 3, think last weekend was an experiment, doubt we will see him in a back 4 again soon. That Leao guy looked cool, although for a world record fee I really have second thoughts.

Great result, good game and really enjoyable atmosphere. I’m not sure why are people making it as if Milan was poor, we were all over them and Chilwell, Silva and James pocketed their gunpowder up front so well that we made them look poor, but they are not a bad side we just made them look it.

Not really having a go, but we can't deny that Stamford Bridge is pretty much dead these days. The only time I hear the fans is when we score a goal.

It's not just the bridge there's terrible atmosphere at Man United, Spurs although to be fair not at WHL as was, Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool the diehards at West Ham hate the new ground. Cliche it might be but once we went 1-0 down to Leeds we were never going to get back in the game the atmosphere was off the scale and so 12th man cliche is used. I got home about half an hour from the pub watched the highlights on YT and this is what Stamford Bridge and numerous other grounds is full of now especially on European nights not exactly old school 10 pints before the game type.

Blah, blah, blah, moan, blah, blah, blah, groan.

So many positives tonight.

Great energy all over the pitch. So many second balls won. We were far more direct than usual and generally mixed up our approach which is refreshing.

Kepa pinged a few nice balls into areas which produced some good interchanges and led to promising breaks on their goal.

A proper striker's goal. Seven English players on the pitch. You get the feeling that training is productive and enjoyable. A good start for Potter.

What a privilege to watch an artist like Silva at work.

A dominant display. What struck me was how easily we were able to hold the ball under physical pressure. We just held them off and kept the ball all night, men against boys in that regard.

Kudos to Aubameyang for his finish. Opportunistic but he was in exactly the right spot to take advantage of the error. Not cutting back and then complaining when the ball didn't go to him. Attacking the goal taking the simple approach. For me reflecting on the likes of Costa and Eto'o this was a hallmark. Put yourself in position in the box to score the tap ins.

Going to enjoy this win as every win builds confidence and will in turn improve performances.

However without goign overboard Milan were particulalry open and poor and therefore we often got away with quite a poor level of ball care and levels of sloppiness taht woudl be punished in the PL. The loss of Fofana, if lengthy, could be signifcant as well. A better team would have exploited the bomb scare that was Koulibaly and it could easily have unravelled for us.

A good night though and hopefully one that has the knock on effect of building confidence andgettign players over the loss of form that we have seen so far this season.

Think that's about what I saw. Koulibaly tried too hard in H1 and was way better in h2. kepa didn't face many contested high balls if any so we don't know if he has improved there. Kova also still working his way into form with a number of poor passes early on but improved.

Fofana is a worry. He will probably be missing for a while. Chalobah may therefore get more opportunity. I think he is up to the job.

Last night was the first game I've been able to watch at the bridge since pre-covid. Reaction might be a bit skewed because of that but I thought other than a slightly shaky first 10-15 we were really good. Reece was immense, RLC fantastic in midfield, and I don't think Silva put a foot wrong.

Felt a bit sorry for Broja coming on at the same time as J5 as we lost a lot of forward thrust with that change which made it harder for anything to be created for him... Though I suppose at 3-0 up, slowing things down and seeing out the win isn't a bad thing.

On atmosphere, as I've seen a few comments about that now: I was in the MHL and thought we were pretty vocal, East/West stands were fairly quiet but that's to be expected really with the mix of corporate/families that occupy those seats. I don't know if maybe the fans in the MHL are turned down slightly on broadcasts because for my money they're always plenty loud, especially on European nights. The AC fans were very quiet though, which really surprised me. Obviously the game wasn't going how they'd hoped but I still expected a bit more out of them - in the 2nd half they were more or less silent until the last 5 or 10 minutes when they all piped up again.

One slight difference I thought I noticed was that occasionally we broke on the counter a bit faster, which was nice.

Unless it came down the left, then Chilwell just passed it backwards every time.

That left side needs some time to gel I think. When you consider that Chilwell not long back from a long term injury hasn't played with the same LCB behind him two games in a row yet I think it's understandable that there could be some teething issues.

Koulibaly's passing range looks like it could be an asset but he and Chilwell were very rarely on the same page last night - given time though I think it'll get there.

James last night with a performance that was out of this world. He really is a class act.

Think we were pretty comfortable other than the first 15, against a really decent side. Hopefully we can kick on in the champs league now and take these performances into the league. Onwards and upwards

Thought that was the best we’ve played since that Juventus game last season, could argue that shows the lack of quality in serie a but thought we played brilliantly nonetheless.

Reece James is the bollocks that’s all.👏🏼

onto the next one UTC

Great result, good performance.

A nervy first 15 minutes, but we settled well after that and clearly looked the better team.

Potter's made good progress after a short space of time. The team is playing with more fluidity and pressing well.

Reece James is simply brilliant. What a joy to watch.

A well deserved victory but let's not get carried away. Milan were forced to play a weakened side and the away game maybe a different matter.   We are slowly decreasing the back and sideways passes and it was nice to see players trying to make forward passes; far too many touches on the ball though, but hopefully that will diminish as they get use to Potters set up.  A couple of player observations; I didn't think PEA was in the game until he scored and then faded. Sterling still running into blind alleys and brick walls and at times for me, he became frustrating to watch- needs to release the ball quicker. Mount clearly still trying to find his form, running all over the place trying to press, a well taken offside goal but he needs a couple of decent games under his belt to get his season going.  Kova I thought struggled at times and not the Kova we saw last season.  Koulibaly, a nervous start and still looks uncomfortable at times. Trevor was solid. Silva and Reece MOTM for me.

Looking forward to the weekend to see another few baby steps forward under Potters guidance.

Saved me typing my take on the game!

We'll have stiffer tests if we get out of the group stages, without a doubt. Napoli are playing really well at the moment. They are the best team in Italy at the moment. In the CL they are tearing it up. But again, this is a game we very likely would have dropped points in under Tuchel this season. We seem to be playing with more confidence, which is great. The injuries for Milan would have played a part in them being pretty mediocre at the back. Up top they showed some dangerous moments, but not enough to cause us too many issues. Hopefully they'll provide a better test next week as I want to see this Chelsea team challenged a bit.
