He did look good back then.

Really hasn't kicked on anywhere since, and the move to PSG looks to have ben a complete waste of time, but he has just joined Nice permanently so maybe he'll make more of an impression there ?

I'm really hoping Slonina is the real deal - I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Also possible that one of the loan army keepers might develop enough to make it as one of our three keepers. I wonder how the club view the hierarchy  ?

  • Nathan Baxter (Hull City)
  • Lucas Bergstrom (Peterborough)
  • Jamie Cumming (MK Dons)

Also a couple of other keepers (Wady and Adegoke) on loan in non-league ... you can't say our recruiters aren't trying LOL

I seem to remember he made a mistake on his second PSG game and never got a look in after that, must have hit his confidence badly. Like you say, hopefully can kick on at a new club.

I can only say i've YouTube scouted Slonina and from what i see he seems to parry everything out into danger and doesn't actually catch much, our scouts have obviously seen something in him though so fingers crossed.

Sorry but he needs shipping out, just not good enough for a team who want to challenge, he was brilliant at first but now I don't want him ever starting again.

f**k me, when you see those all together, not sure how even his staunchest supporters can defend him.

It's pub league stuff. He honestly looks like a bloke who has turned up to watch a game and enjoy a few beers and has suddenly been thrown the No.1 jersey!

And he wanted a new improved deal FFS?!!

Like every school and pub team in the country the bloke whose useless at football goes in goal cause he's tall.😁

And to think I wrote all those uncomplimentary things about Kepa on this forum, is it the goalkeeping coaching at CFC or have we just got hopeless at scouting players full stop?

I've often wondered what someone like Hilario, who only made 20 appearances for us in 8 seasons, is able to teach our #1's in terms of goalkeeping technique and mentality. 6 years he's been in that coaching role now ... Courtois, Begovic, Caballero, Kepa and Mendy is who we have had between the sticks in his tenure, so the scouts (the snake aside) haven't exactly covered themselves in glory either.

I think he just needs some coaching on his decision making. He's not a terrible keeper, he can go long stretches without clangers. To chuck him in the bin right now would be too reactionary, he deserves a chance improve on his flaws.

Agreed but I for one could do without watching him trying to learn the basics during matchdays - he can do that on the training ground. The thing is, but that‘s just my gut feeling / impression - I don‘t think he made those cocky things before the AFCON or at least CL final. Sometimes I think he wants everybody to recognize him as a truly elite goalkeeper on purpose which leads to those bizarre decisions. That would reflect badly on his mentality and benching him (not throwing him into the bin) could be rather helpful because you can hardly out-train that cockiness and he will never learn the techniques to truly play a sweeper keeper and not just pose as one.

I‘m very harsh on him, I actually really liked him not just because he kept a lot of clean sheets but because he appeared rather humble and concerned about doing the simple things right which is all I‘m asking for but now it appears to me he couldn‘t handle the sudden fame and hype around his person.

Hasn't got the technique in him to play with ball at feet. It's similar to the Joe Hart situation, good GK but couldn't pass. First came a good ball playing GK who couldn't make a save, cost Pep lots of points. Then Pep got Emerson, sorted both issues in one go. I don't see us getting another GK this summer, and Mendy won't master passing anytime soon, so the early way out is stop passing around. It will disrupt our rhythm, but hell lot better than concede goals or possession near the box.

You can tell him to cut out dribbling or passing, but you can also tell the defenders not to do risky back passes ... and better still focus the defenders on passing forwards.

All he needs to do is boot it out of play when in danger. Its that simple and a way easier problem to fix than Kepa being unable to make  save.

Spot on. His one flaw is easily fixable, compared to a keeper who has a myriad of technical and physical flaws that make him ill-equipped for the top flight, and it is flaw shared by every single "top" goalkeeper around the world except maybe Ederson - who arguably isn't as good a shot-stopper as the others.

All keepers make egregious mistakes on the ball - just ask Donnarumma or Alisson

People are buying way too much into imaginary drama. You know it's exaggerrated when a "lowlights" video only comes up with 5 mistakes in 12 months.

You will scarcely find a single modern goalkeeper that doesn't do this. Modern goalkeeping coaches teach kids to punch and parry, and they rarely have the confidence to practice catching until much later in their career. They do this because it's supposedly 'cogntively easier' to decide to punch/parry with authority, whereas catching requires more timing and judgement in the heat of the moment. Risk vs reward sort of thing.

I used to work with one of Australia's goalkeeping coaches, who has been ranting about this for the last ~15 years. His students stood out at combined camps because they were the only teens running out to catch crosses!

5 Mistakes in 12 months for a goalkeeper is an awful lot, considering all of them lead to goals or penalties which then lead to goals anyway because he can't save pens.

Kepa was dropped and replaced for as many mistakes in the same period. No reason why Mendy shouldn't have the same scrutiny on him.

I like Mendy, and agree with what @weetee said above - doing the simple things right, and not being too flashy is what made him a good goalkeeper.

Of those mistakes in the video:
Real Madrid - Led to a goal which effectively knocked us out of the champions league (despite the result in the Bernabeu)
West Ham - Gave away a pen for them to equalise, and then flapped at a cross/shot for them to win
Everton - Gave away a pen and they ultimately win the game 1-0
Leeds - Gave away the first goal

So not only is he making mistakes, he's making mistakes that end up costing us goals as well as points. Obviously people wouldn't really care  if we won all of those games and the Mendy errors were just a blip on the scoresheet, but the reality is he is costing us games at this stage, and but for better finishing and decision making from the opposition, there would've been a few more goals in that video.

On his day, when he gets the basics right I think he can be a great keeper, but at the moment I would say his form and mistakes are comparable with Claudio Bravo's awful season at City.

If we manage to merge Kepa and Medny into one GK, we will have a pretty good one. Right now, both of them are second choice GK. He's not commanding the 6 yard box in set pieces, which made our defending looked so shaky every time a cross is getting in the box.

The funny thing is that when he started playing for us he used to command the box and would grab the ball in corners and set pieces but now he's shaky in set pieces too. Maybe my impression was influenced by having had Kepa not commanding the box for too long and any tall bloke just looked to me like doing it properly.

In theory his flaw should be easy to rectify. He rarely lets in an easy shot/fumbles a cross.  Dropping a goalie rarely works out in my opinion but he is on last chance territory, any more errors and Kepa should get a chance again.

No I disagree, he should be dropped ASAP.  You can tell him until hell freezes over not to play with the ball at his feet, but he is the type of person whose Brain freezes up and he stops thinking rationally.  This will happen again if he is kept as our first choice keeper.

The thing that i cannot get my head around, for this particular goal is the complete lack of common sense.

Okay so he got his knickers in a twist and took too long with the ball under his feet so panicked. Boot it away, away from danger. Well no need, actually to even do that, he wasn't in his goal and was a yard from the goal line, just back heel it or side foot it off the pitch. The attacker is conditioned to think that he is going to try to play the way he is facing and get the ball up the pitch or in to touch as far away as possible, so don't, just pass it off the pitch at the nearest point and give away a corner.

Common sense
