Jorginho is.... (well now was) a Blue

Much as I am a fan starting him in a 2 man midfield against Porto and Real is one thing, it is very different against a high press full strength City side.

Even Kante wont be able to save him of we play him in a 2.

I think he had mostly decent games vs Man City over the past years, if we concede from long range shots we'll just have to deal with it. The last time we lost against Man City it was Kante at the base of the midfield and nobody could save Kante either, we just have to minimize our weaknesses in a different way because it's crystal clear that Man City's front 3 of Foden, KDB and Mahrez are simply better than our midfield.

Love Jorgi, he's brilliant. I don't know how any chelsea fan can dislike him, just listen to his interviews. Such a competitor and team player. Yes, he's made some shocking individual mistakes this season, but that's because he's brave enough to ask for the ball on the edge of our own box constantly to help us break through the press. We are at our best when he is in the team and I hope that he starts alongside Kante tomorrow - and I'm one of Kovacic's biggest fans, I think he's brilliant! But Kante is the world's best and we play better as a team and more connect with Jorgi in there.

Some of us watch games rather than interviews! No one dislikes him, but many dislike his football ability. Unfortunately Jorginho's best is just not Chelsea quality.

Hopefully Kovacic starts tomorrow.

He played well tonight..... I think. Didn’t notice him which is what I want from him. Great interceptions and recycled the ball quickly. Jori this is what I want from you. You are a strong part of our history for evermore.

He played generally well tonight, he got by-passed a couple of times (not the only one that happened too) yet also made interceptions and was good at times at not losing the ball under pressure. Glad it didn't go to penalties as think the City keeper would have been wise to his hop and skip.

Will forever be one of the heroes of this night in Porto!

So happy for Jorginho. Been through a lot from some fans but he'll always be fondly remembered at this club now.

Provided a solid and flawless display alongside the immense Kante.

City clearly target him, 4 attacking midfielders along with Mahrez and Sterling pushed out high and wide. He coped with it far, far better than I expected. So much so he did not need Kante to save him as he did his job perfectly.

Well done Jorgi!

While surfing the football media came across this comment that caught my eye on Jorginho.

One of the worst midfielders in a non structured system - Frank

One of the best in a structured system - Tuchel, Sarri.

Not sure it is that simple yet an interesting perspective.

Jorginho fills one specific niche that is he is good at ball recycling and slowing down tempo when needed.

He needs a team/teammates with tactical intelligence and positioning to fully be useful. His weaknesses are too glaring for simple teams but he's a top team's kryptonite.

It's a complete nonsense opinion but that kind of simple, reductive opinion on the back of a victory is to be expected.

He was good under all 3 managers if you look at the timeline;
Under Sarri absolutely essential for our tactics to work and our best passer, top3 finish and Europa League title.
First season under Lampard a key player and made a good partnership with Kovacic for the most part of that season, still with the most progressive passes in the whole squad and most balls into the final third, loss in the FA cup final and missed a penalty in the other cup final.
During this season we had a huge run of being undefeated while he was in the starting lineup and then he has been a key player for Tuchel as well in the second half of the season.

Lampard had a structure he just put Kante at the base of the midfield at some point during this second season which didn't work out so I see that comment mainly as a disrespect towards Lampard, Jorginho has been doing the same role for 3 seasons now he wasn't really one of the worst. His worst game for the club were under Tuchel not so long ago when he had a big blunder vs Arsenal but he played a whole lot so that maybe was a factor for his consistency level that dropped, even so he was great during our CL campaign.

As I have said before, he is a great player against certain opposition. It’s not by chance that he has been very good in Europe and against top teams but crap or ineffective against low and mid table teams. I’d keep him as he is useful against some type of teams, but definitely would get a world class DM to play most games against teams sitting deep and playing high intensity, physical game.
