Not a good game for Alonso, he really struggled today. He's had a run of good form though so I don't think we should be too hard on him.

I thought Emerson was fit two weeks ago, has he injured himself again? Strange not having him on the bench atleast today, also Lampard only spoke about missing Kante in the post match conference.

I recall Emerson on the bench against Burnley and was surprised he wasn't included today. I expected him to start. Maybe he had aggravated his injury somehow?

It was clear as day Alonso wouldn't be up for it tonight. It happens every time he plays too many consecutive games.

The problem is though we all know performances like this are always round the corner with him.

That is what you're going to get with a player that isn't first choice though.

It would be good if we can see Emerson get a few months of football with us without picking up an injury. Then we can properly evaluate if we need a new LB or not.

We really can't play him against good teams, or even average teams with decent attacking players like United.

The guy just isn't  a Left Back, Tomori has been compensating for his positional lapses whilst he is away on his adventures up the pitch this season.

Would honestly rather see an inexperienced Maatsen in the starting 11 than Alonso, at least he has the physical attributes to recover from any mistakes.

Alonso was pretty good in all the games apart Manu where he didn't have Tomori making his runs. He needs that backup so he can gallop forward. This is a team game. Alonso is quite dangerous at shooting and crosses.

I would be perfectly fine if he never played another game in a Chelsea shirt.

An obvious weak link. Emerson needs to come back asap

That performance in the first half may have just cost him a run in the team for a long time. He's got the ability to put a run of good games together, but he also puts in some awful performances too often. From the first minute he looked way off the pace, and it's not just because of his speed either. We know he is slow, but he has shown that he is good enough to make up for that lack of speed. His problem was that his head was in the clouds, he just didn't look that interested. Everything he did was half hearted, and you can never play like that at any level.

After the way Azpilicueta and especially James played in the second half, I think Lampard may just see those two as the better option until Emerson get's back up to speed.

Pity he's so sh*t at being a defender, which is his job after all.

He was poor, LB is not his position it's too difficult for him. 

 

Awful crossing. Awful passing. Slow. Falls over all the time. Gives away stupid fouls.

Time to phase him out of the team.

After he was substituted I thought That's the last we've seen of Alonso. Probably not, but still.

He can be a truly top class LWB. Unfortunately he’s never a LB. He can get away with it some games and put in a good performance every now and then but he’s just not got the skillset to play in a flat 4!

 

A bit like Moses at RWB. Conte worked some voodoo magic to make those two look like truly top class players, its quite incredible how he managed that.

His never been that great at defending but lately his attacking (which is his strength) has been out of sorts as well.

It’s looking like the end of road for the fella.

I don't think he looked truly top class in 16/17, his inclusion aided our title winning formation change but he was the second weakest link in that side behind Matic.

Even then he was a 1 good game, 2 average, 1 attrotious type player he is now.
